Thanks Just want to add that, if you are following the STEP list, it's completely normal that some mods will override files from other mods.
Just make sure you follow all the instructions for each mod you install (lot's of them have an "expand" button). In some cases, you will need to hide certain files of one mod so that it doesn't override an older one, etc. but they'll tell you if that's the case. It's really well described for all the mods in the list, so it should be easy to do.
By the time I was through the list, I had a pretty good understanding of how the system in general works, so it's a good learning experience for modding with MO2.
Yeah I realised a couple of days ago about the bloody expand thing. I am sure I have set a few up that are probably not quite right but I am getting to the stage of not caring as I just want to play. I am re-parsing the mods as I skipped a few in 04 and 05 as I couldn't figure out how to install them or didn't care if I had them or not. The ones that are causing me problems are the ones that don't automatically download to MO2, I'll have to go back and add a couple of those as I have to read the instructions and find the right location and make sure they are set up properly. One of those is Skyrim Realistic Overhaul where do I locate it install it etc. What the hell does this even mean: "Example plugin for ENBSeries graphic mod. It forces gamma parameter of the enbeffect.fx shader to be 1.0 and toggle mod on/off every 20 frames. To compile it, create empty dll project and add to it ExamplePlugin.cpp source file. To run it, change extention of compiled dll file to .dllplugin and place it to "enbseries" folder."

The ones that are causing me problems are the ones that don't automatically download to MO2 Just download them to your HDD and install them with MO2 then delete the archive you downloaded or keep it. So choose Install Mod via MO2? What do I choose for enbseries when I choose the ZIP it says the data does not look valid if not the zip what do I choose? or am I doing it wrong? And now another thing, not sure it is an issue but the following are greyed out now and I have no idea why or what that means if anything? EDIT: So I now have every MOD including and up to the 05 recommendations - I have cleaned the ESM, Hearthstones, Dragonborn and Dawnguard whatever they are after running LOOT and then Running Loot again. AnDromedary Do I have to install any of the 06, 07, 08 and 09 MODS before I start playing or at all? I am happy to install those over the following days but I'd like to start playing but still after an answer re the greyed out stuff above. EDIT: I tried running the game it starts, you get the Bethesda Logo and then circles forever on the Dragon Icon Logo. talyn82 I cannot install that ENB zip it just gives an error data looks incorrect, how much of a difference will it make given all stuff I have installed with STEP? Can I just ignore all the overwrite Loose Files and Overwritten flagged stuff or do I need to do something about them?

Can I just ignore all the overwrite Loose Files and Overwritten flagged stuff or do I need to do something about them? Ok, a few points to unpack:
1. If you follow the STEP mod list, it's best to really follow it. The game crashing if you open it in the middle of the process is expected. They have a big warning sign about this right there: If you don't want to use all the mods in the STEP list, then you need to read the instructions about install, compatibility and dependencies for each individual mod on their Nexus page as you install them. It's a process but there is no way around it because a lot of those mods are interdependent. IMO that is the nice thing about the STEP list, if you just follow their instructions, you need not worry about the rest so much and you get a decent visual package. But then you really need to follow each and every step.
2. About those greyed out mods: You made those mods yourself and right now, they are just empty folders with no files in them. That's why they are grey. You need to fill them. In the case of the xEdit Output, there comes a step waaaayyyy later in the list, where you will put a file into that folder/mod. At that point, it will no longer be grey. Until then, don't worry about it. As long as it's just an empty folder, it won't do anything.
3. The "Cleaned Vanilla Masters" mod should not be empty at this point. You should have copied the cleaned vanilla master files into it during this part of Step 3 in the list: You don't technically need to do this but it's good practice. What it basically does is: you are taking the cleaned files out of the game itself and put them into this mod folder. This way the game itself can stay vanilla (without the cleaning) if it want's to check game file integrity or Steam gets some weird ideas about repairing files but your cleaned files in the mod will override the vanilla files while playing. So you will play with the clean files while the game doesn't really "see" them. It just takes full advantage of the fact that MO2 sets up your mods in a different folder structure than the game itself.
Side note: I would put the "xEdit Output" and the "Cleaned Vanilla Masters" mods under the Creation Club content. I don't quite remember if any Creation Club content needed to be cleaned but I believe they are considered Vanilla content in this guide, so placing your "Cleaned Vanilla Masters" mod under them ensures that your clean files will override the vanilla CC files if necessary.
4. About the ENB: Instructions on how to install ENB is also in Step list, just way down because it's one of the last things you do after setting up the other stuff (it doesn't really matter that much but it does work this way, so I'd stick with it if you want to follow the list). It's in section " 21 - Post-Processing": Again, it's important to open all the expandable instructions and read all the text carefully. There is very little redundant information in this guide, so every single line of text has a purpose.
You can of course use another ENB mod and don't have to use the STEP one but if you do, as always, make sure to read their Nexus page to learn about requirements, dependencies, proper ini settings and all that stuff.
On a final note, I will just say that modding Skyrim to this extent is always a process and requires a lot of reading. Either in the STEP list or on the Nexus pages of all the mods. I liked this list because I found it to be a lot of gain for fairly little effort but it is an effort nonetheless. Running the game with 500+ mods without running into issues while playing always is. The important thing is: Always make sure you understand what it is that you are doing. Once you get the hang of it, you'll find that for 99% of it, it's always the same procedure. So it does become easiert with practice but there is a learning curve for sure.
Hope you stick with it for a bit longer and good luck!

Can I just ignore all the overwrite Loose Files and Overwritten flagged stuff or do I need to do something about them? Just unpack the zip archive into your Skyrim root folder. You have to do this manually and not in MO2. As for overwriting files if MO2 is like Vortex it should be safe to overwrite the files without causing any problems.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation, for some reason when reading the guide I thought it said that after the 05 MOD section it was optional. It has been a big learning curve and everything was working fine at the testing stage and I had to do a second parse of the MODS making sure I opened the expand parts because first time through I didn't understand that was part of the process not some optional thing and I didn't understand the whole FOMOD thing and what it was even talking about. RE the BIG RED WARNING I am sure I read it but just forgot about it. But at least I did ask you if it was OK to start, I just got impatient. So at least few more days work for me installing MODS, I have a busy weekend so it may stretch into next week. Thanks again for your help and patience.

Oh if you're following a mod guide then don't worry about breaking mod if you have to overwrite their files. Usually these authors who compile the mod lists have used the mods in their own game, and know what's is safe to overwrite.

So re STEP I thought I was near the end at 04 MAN was I wrong. I just finished 7 and looked ahead and there are another 13 sets. OMG this will probably take me till mid to end of next week to do. I have done virtually nothing else but this today. I also noticed that I had been missing the "Hide Files" part of the earlier files so will have to go back to before part the middle of part 06 and check all the MODS for that and do it. Is it sad that I opted out of playing baseball tomorrow to sit and keep doing this? I am carrying a bit of an injury and they have plenty of players, game means nothing 2nd last one and we cannot make the finals.

Yet another question but the good news is I have installed everything that I can. I have not installed any of the AFK Mods as his site needs you to create an account but even though I am getting the security questions right (over 10 times) it just keeps telling me I got it wrong. There are a couple of other MOD's I am sure I haven't installed properly as in I haven't hidden files (got bored going through them) or set up "Empty Mods" but they all say it is recommended so just no updating for me. Ran LOOT and XLOD and did a ExEdit clean. Tried to do the performance tuning, ran BETH.ini and the guide wanted to know the FPS but I wasn't seeing any FPS from MSI or BETH.ini itself yet it as far as I know is set up properly. So started the game and with BETH.ini "High" settings it was on the "main menu" maxing out my screen at 165 FPS. Maybe need to change to Ultra Settings. I hope that means the game will launch when I start a new game. I skipped Simple Children as it needs too much fiddling around with the file tree in the mod (or the game will freeze) but I may do that tomorrow and cannot install Vanilla Trees as the MOD is unavailable on Nexus. I chose not to use Alternate Start it just doesn't interest me and also a couple of other "Optional" MODS. The question now is whether to install ENB and all the Post Processing MODS that go with it. By the end of the day I was swearing at my PC so i decided it was good time to stop and have a beer whilst I cooked dinner. I modified the files for Dynolod or whatever it is at the Tuning/Post Processing stage so I probably should install ENB and it's MODS they just looked a bit of a pain. So should I install ENB does it make that big a difference?Do I need to worry about all the Creative Club errors they throw in LOOT?

So should I install ENB does it make that big a difference?Do I need to worry about all the Creative Club errors they throw in LOOT? I tried ENB once and never bothered with it again. If you like the base game look, no point in installing it. The Creative Club errors in LOOT are about cleaning them? If so, you can ignore them, it's actually not recommended to clean up the official DLCs because mods might be referencing those entries and you can never know.

So should I install ENB does it make that big a difference?Do I need to worry about all the Creative Club errors they throw in LOOT?I already answered a couple of those in response to the PM you sent but a few extra points:
- FPS in the main menue will always be super high because the game basically doesn't have to render anything. You need to look at FPS in the game in the scenes they recommend you to look at (tundra and Riften at clear weather daytime). That will give you an idea. Read their section on the performance tuning. the LODs, ini settings and the ENB will bring the framerate down. I had about 135 Frames in Riften without LODs and ENB and about 60-70 with it.
- If you don't use the Alternative Start Mod, you will need to xEdit the STEP patch because it expects this mod to be installed. Not having it may cause trouble either already during applying the patch or in game. See here: Note: The Alternative Start Mod does allow you to choose the vanilla beginning as an option, so there is no downside to having it.
- I can't tell you from the top of my head if the "Simple Children" mod has any dependencies in the mod list. Better check if you want to skip it.
- Installing ENB: How much difference ENBs make depends on the ENB mod you are using. Some will have huge impacts on the look of the game, others don't. The STEP one is fairly subtle (it's supposed to maintain the vanilla "feel" of things) but it does provide some nice lighting effects, etc. I'd say if you have the FPS to spare, go for it, why not?
- And just to reiterate: Hiding the correct files as mentioned in the guide is important if you don't want to encounter glitches in the game. The reason is this: Say they ask you to hide a particular mesh from a mod. They are doing it because another mod has already brought in its own mesh with the corresponding textures. If the new mod changes the mesh again, the textures from the first mod won't fit and you get some garbled mess in the game. That's just one example but the upshot is, if you use the guide, use it all the way or be sure you know what you are doing when deviating.

The question now is whether to install ENB and all the Post Processing MODS that go with it. For me ENB is a must, in fact I'd rather play Skyrim with an ENB and no texture mods than no ENB. Especially the Legendary Edition had amazing ENBs that made the game look so much better. The Special Edition kinda sucks in terms of ENB. I believe because Bethesda already put a kind of ENB on it so it looks more colorful on consoles. That seems to mess with ENBs, most have blown out skies and an awful white sun. I have yet to find an ENB that looks a great as the ones I used in the LE. But still, a good ENB is amazingy just for the cinematic depth of field I'm a big fan of. The ENB I'm using for FO4 for example has reflections on water that makes everything so much prettier and more realistic. ENB is taxing but with your beefy new PC this shouldn't be an issue. Installing ENBs is actually super easy and once you get the hang of it swapping them out and testing several in a row is child's play. Some people prefer to choose an ENB first before modding the rest of the game because the color tint will have an impact on how skin looks. So some ENBs work better with certain textures. Give it a go, especially if you want an ENB that makes the game brighter and more fantasy. I personally dislike the gloomy even if realistic vanilla lighting. I like my games sunny and vivid.

That seems to mess with ENBs, most have blown out skies and an awful white sun. Just a side note: My modding guide suggests to reduce the sun size in the ini files if you use an ENB to compensate for this issue. They do it for a specific one but they do comment that it's something you should do if you use any ENB at all with the SE/AE. See here (especially under "Detail" and und "Custom". On a different Note (and maybe as a bit of motivation for dazk to keep going, ), my latest adventure was the Quest "The Cause" which got introduced by the Creation Club stuff from the AE. I am not a big fan of the whole Creation Club concept Bethesda tried to push on us, nor was I too impressed by any of the content so far but I have to admit, this was a nice quest. It's basically a big throwback to TES4: Oblivion. Basically, the Cult of the Mythic Dawn is trying to make a comeback and build a new Oblivion gate. To prevent this, you first dive into an Ayleid ruin (remember those from TES4?) and then you go after the cult's underground temple itself. Turns out, you (the Dragonborn) were part of the key to open the gate in the forst place and so as you defeat the head cultist, the gate opens. Now you have to go to Oblivion itself and defeat to Daedra Warlords to prevent a new invasion. They really did a great job re-building Oblivion from TES4. It's got everything, including the roots that strike at you if you come close, the flowers that spill oison, the Bloodgrass, the still beating chained hearts of the dammed (which are basically chests you can loot), etc. It really is a nice blast from the past. Some pictures:

AnDromedary and talyn82 just wanted to say thanks for yor help with the STEP stuff but I had to give up yesterday. Due no doubt to my lack of ability/knowledge and probably impatience I must have made mistakes that even going back through and checking and replacing previously installed MODS could not fix. After running the Plugin clean up and trying to fix numerous errors and after getting very confused about moving files between Vanilla Masters folders etc. the game gave me the final verdict in that it would not launch. I uninstalled everything with a view to starting again but when on NMM noticed the Collectibles section and was browsing it and noticed one that as a "Premium" user I could download 481 MODS in a collection with the click of 1 button via Vortex for Skyrim SE which included nearly every MOD in the STEP guide. It took just over two hours and automatically did all the installation and cleaning stuff that is required in STEP. Not 100% sure I have not stuffed this up as well but it all seems to have installed I just need to get a chance to try it out a bit later. Again thanks for all the help from others as well.

dazk I forgot to ask is this your first time playing Skyrim? If so I recommend playing vanilla then after you complete the main quest and 2 short dlc's. You decide what you liked and what you did not, and then pick mods that fix what you don't like. There is only one mod you need for a first time and that's the Unofficial Patch. Just remember besides Morrowind. Both Oblivion and Skyrim are kept relevant due to the modding community. For Skyrim there are 1000's of mods that you can choose from. I currently have over 500 mods installed. One of my favorite mods for example is called Wintersun. It let's you worship one of the many gods in the TES universe. For example in the game there is a civil war between the Stormcloaks (traditional Nords) and the Empire. The civil war is about the worship of Talos. The Imperials want to ban it and the Nords want to worship him. So with Wintersun you can roleplay as an Imperial who worships Talos.

Howdy, not my first time I have over 1,200 hours and multiple PT's on Vanilla Skyrim and the DLC's but with SE I have only started once prior playing 38 hours. The Collection I downloaded has not only MODS but at least 4 new quests as well it's massive as I said, 480+ MODS which I am actually yet to go through and see what they all are if I even do but I just checked and yes it has Wintersun in the list.

Heyo, yeah, maybe I should have mentioned collections as an alternative.
I did something similar with Fallout 4 and that worked as well. The reason I like the STEP guide is because - while complicated - I thought it was really well explained (it was also my first time modding Skyrim extensively like this) and once you've done it, you get a good understanding of the principle involved in making your own lists and what to look out for, so it makes subsequent individual modding a bit more easy/flexible.
But hey, glad you found something that works for you after all. Have fun with the next PT!

Okay cool I think you'll find the Special Edition a lot more stable than the Legendary Edition. Most likely the collection you downloaded has all of the critical bug fixes that will make your playthrough smooth. Also since your a BioWare fan there are many follower mods with detailed personalities and there own side quests. My favorites are Inigo, Vilja, and Serana from the Serana Dialogue Addon.

Of course I cannot get the game to launch properly from Vortex. It launches but says SKSE64 is not running.

It launches but says SKSE64 is not running. Did you unzip the SKSE64 archive next to the Skyrim.exe file in the Skyrim root folder?

In the Skyrim Special Edition Folder there is a SKSE64 Launcher There is also a folder called SKSE that then has another folder called skse64_02_03 that has some folders and a another SKSE64 Launcher C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\SKSE\skse64_2_02_03

In the Skyrim Special Edition Folder there is a SKSE64 Launcher There is also a folder called SKSE that then has another folder called skse64_02_03 that has some folders and a another SKSE64 Launcher C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\SKSE\skse64_2_02_03 Double click on the SKSE64 launcher in the main folder where the Skyrim.exe is.
