Origins combat system was a disaster not only because it's slow but the animations are stiff and stale, and it looks like a bunch of high school grads made this game. I say hire someone who are savants of animation, choreography, and combat design. I love DAO's combat. I wish the subsequent games had merely refined that. But instead they removed all the support abilities and the crowd control and the non-combat abilities that let you change how combat worked (like stealth and traps). I'd love to have DAO's combat back. I would hope not especially when other devs are putting fast paced combat in RPGs that would outplay Dragon Age. Take Witcher for example.

(They should learn from Shadow of Mordor when it comes to combat design and animations) It would be nice if they create a classless protagonist along with fast paced fluid combat.

I wish Dragon Age series was a lot like this.................. BioWare when are you ever going to learn?? As I've said earlier in the thread, I'd love to see this level of finesse, fluidity and visceral quality to combat in DA4. Shadow of War taking it up another notch yet. But I can imagine some of the (non-insignificant) challenges trying to implement something like this for DA. SoM has a fixed protagonist, fewer enemy types/weapon types/abilities, etc. so it would be easier to accomplish than with a game which has different character heights/reach/breadth of weaponry/fighting styles/etc. and syncing those great glory-kill animations up with the wide range of enemy types. At the end of the day, it'd probably be many times the work the team working on SoM had to deal with. Not to say I wouldn't want BioWare to see this as a challenge worth taking on...

IDK why they didn't want to put this kind of combat style to make DA more enjoyable, and me personally I think they're lazy and cheap and they can do it if they wanted to but they chose not to.

I would absolutely hate for DA4 to have action combat. It just doesn't work when you have 4 characters to play. And Dragon Age as a series is still a realtime with pause game with multiple controllable characters. Personally I prefer to mainly stick with my own character which is why I really appreciate the tactics menu of DAO/2 which I have not seen in any other game. I expected DAI to be DA2 with DAO amount of abilities to choose from and instead I got what could only be described as an unfinished 2004 MMO with pause button slapped on it and only two roles, tank and DPS, implemented. The combat in DAI is just tedious. Infact, the combat with it's lack of spells to choose from, lack of meaningful CC and MIA tactics menu was one of my biggest complaints with the game. I see people linking these action RPG videos here saying they want that for DA4 but those aren't Dragon Age, those are action RPGs. If BioWare wants to make them they should make up a new IP for that instead of ruining this wonderful franchise any more :x I've loved Witcher games since the first one but the thought process you go through in combat in those games is vastly different than the one you use for Dragon Age. You don't need to think about your other 3 characters and what skills they have and could make use of. DAI was an abomination in this regard but I take that as necessary evil with BW being forced to use an engine made for FPS games. They should now with DA4 be able to focus on making the engine work better as a traditional RPG. Success of games like PoE and DoS/2 should prove that traditional RPGs aren't a dead genre yet. So yeah, count me in the camp that wishes with all their heart that Dragon Age returns to it's roots of being a tactical RPG instead of an action adventure game with RPG elements half-arsedly added on top of it. I understand some people just want to simply smash buttons, watch cutscenes and instant gratification but I for one really enjoy combat that is more about strategic thinking and tactical use of CC, buffs, positioning, managing my team, and above all, tactics menu configuring. DAO/2 are as far as I know the only ones of their kind with traditional RTwP combat combined with "programmable" companions via tactics menu. They are unique . Lets not make them extinct (if someone knows of another franchise with tactics menu I'd be happy to know). Did I mention I love tactics menu?

I don't remember, can we sneak up on enemies before initiating combat in DAI? Yep! I was so happy when I discovered it. Made stuff like the shards and Tomb of Fairel so much easier. Use the stealth upgrades on Backstab or Leaping Shot. For Leaping Shot, you don't even need to hit anything, so you can enter stealth at will. Both grant permanent stealth on use, breaking only on attack. Or if the enemy is Perceptive, which is mostly just dragons, giants, and a few promoted enemies. And all fennecs. Curse youuuuuu, fennecs!!!!!!

I would be willing to try action combat if and only if:
The plot is non-linear The world is open The plot is something we have to discover on our own There is no party The combat is still pausable (to give us time to examine the battlefield) There are more ways to overcome obstacles than just combat

One thing I do wish is that combat in DA could be as crazy and fun as Dishonored II, especially with the use of magic. Dishonored II powers are solely supernatural. I know, magic in DA (D&D) don't work that way. Warning. Some gore in video.

Forget Witcher. I never thought a moment during playing it that it would be enjoyable or applicable to Dragon Age.
The whole time I was playing HZD I was wondering how it could work for DA4. There is stealth, traps, tricks. I could go in screaming and whacking, or picked them off bomb by bomb, to their frustration and confusion. And multiple times where you could get helpful companions- Nil, specifically, and unnamed NPCs who could crouch and stealth with you. THAT is applicable to DA. THAT is excellent.

As long as the rest of the game stays RPG, I would not mind a shift towards more visceral combat. Perhaps take some cues from Dragon's Dogma.

I don't even own a PS4 myself- I borrow from my Brother in Law, who lives with us, every time I travel abroad and want to play a PS4 title. It's how I played TW3 and now HZD. Sure you don't have any friends you could borrow the platform from?
