The year is 2066 and the world is oblivious to the threat it faces.
The fate of humanity lies on the shoulders of Burt Radcliffe, the new head of NASA's Near Earth Object program.
He's been rushing the completion of DefenseNet, a ring of satellites that are both part of an early-warning system as well as the means to eliminate incoming threats.
Yet Burt knows that despite the world's best efforts, nothing can be done about the alert he's just received.
Coming out of deep space is a danger that's been approaching since the dawn of time. A black hole. An unstoppable threat that promises death for all in its wake.
Dave Holmes was a modern-day Einstein. As the original architect of DefenseNet, he'd had visions of this Primordial Threat before he disappeared, yet he'd left behind no details on how the problem might be solved.
Can Holmes be found, and if so, will his solution even work?
The world has less than a year to find out.

I just started the Lovecraft biography by T.S. Joshi. So far I can say, that it is very detailed, you get to know everything you want to know (or never knew you want to know) about HPL

So just finished an Australian War History book about 17 Special Forces soldiers who in world war 2 sailed undercover in a Japanese fishing boat to near Singapore where 6 of them canoed into Singapore Harbour and sunk/disabled several Japanese merchant vessels. Amazing story of how they were chosen, their training and how they got there and back. Now in the process of reading The Starts Now Unclaimed by Drew Williams, its a light but fun Sci Fi book with an interesting premise and good female main character.

Just started reading this book again, been at least 10 years and TBH can mainly only remember the main character and the overall plot. It was written in 1956 but Alfred Bester is viewed as one of the first cyberpunk writers and the hero/anti-hero Gully Foyle is quite an amazing character. The book is Titled "The Stars My Destination" but was originally released as "Tiger, Tiger" The back summary says: EDUCATION: NONE SKILLS: NONE RECOMMENDATIONS: NONE
Such is the official verdict on Gully Foyle, unskilled space crewman. But Gully has managed to survive for 170 days in the airless purgatory of deep space after the wreck of his ship, and has escaped to Earth carrying a murderous grudge and a secret that could change the course of history. The novel which in large part inspired both the cyberpunk movement of the 1980s and the science fiction New Wave of the 1960s, THE STARS MY DESTINATION has an unrivalled claim to be the most influential sf book of all time.

Edit: I read it through the night. Excellent characters, a cracking plot and secrets held by people for good reasons. There is only a minor plot hole, but it doesn't appear until near the end and it isn't a deal-breaker. Lots of fun.

The mantis cyborgs: insectlike, cruel, and determined to wipe humanity from the face of the galaxy.
The Fleet is humanity’s last chance: a multi-world, multi-national task force assembled to hold the line against the aliens’ overwhelming technology and firepower. Enter Harrison Barlow, who like so many young men of wars past, simply wants to serve his people and partake of the grand adventure of military life. Only, Harrison is not a hot pilot, nor a crack shot with a rifle. What good is a Chaplain’s Assistant in the interstellar battles which will decide the fate of all?
More than he thinks. Because while the mantis insectoids are determined to eliminate the human threat to mantis supremacy, they remember the errors of their past. Is there the slightest chance that humans might have value? Especially since humans seem to have the one thing the mantes explicitly do not: an innate ability to believe in what cannot be proven nor seen God. Captured and stranded behind enemy lines, Barlow must come to grips with the fact that he is not only bargaining for his own life, but the lives of everyone he knows and loves. And so he embarks upon an improbable gambit, determined to alter the course of the entire war.

Read some of Martin's Fire and Blood last night before bed and almost made if through the first chapter. Usually I can only make it to two pages or so before I get tired and doze off. So in other words its got me hooked. It is about the Targaryens after all. It does read like a history book, which is should since its telling us about the important Targaryens before GoT. Look forward to reading more.

They are all very good books and one of my all time favourite reads but I think I prefer the Farseer books. However the whole over-arching Fitz and The Fool thing is great.

Just started ME Annihilation - only 2 chapters in so not much happening yet other than, "We have a problem." Also reading Madeleine L'Engle's Time Quartet. Got through the first 2 books (A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door) which I haven't read since who knows when. It felt like I was reading them for the first time since it's been so long - about all I remembered was the character names.

I haven't finished the book I've started reading months ago (It's utterly boring, many would think what I just said is a blasphemous thing ). I think I'll re-read one of my all time favourite book, As I lay Dying. So many different and new books to discover, and I always go back to the same ones

Just picked this up. Looks like it might have some Mass Effect vibes: Over a millennium in the past, humans fleeing Earth in slower-than-light vessels discovered the Waywork, an abandoned alien superhighway system that allows instantaneous travel from star to star. The problem: there are a finite number of Waypoint nodes—and the burgeoning population of humans is hemmed in as a result. Furthermore, humanity is divided into contending Starstates. One of the strongest is based on an oligarchy ruling families, but still mostly democratic. The other is a totalitarian nightmare. War seems inevitable.
Now a new Waypoint appears. Might it lead to the long-lost creators of the Waywork? If so, there may be knowledge and technology that will tip the balance in the coming war.
Three people race to make it to the new Waypoint—and beyond. These include Wyodreth Antagean, the reluctant son of an interstellar shipping magnate, Lady Garsina Oswight, the daring daughter of a royal family, and Zuri Mikton, a disgraced flag officer seeking redemption. They are facing an implacable foe in Golsubril Vex, a merciless, but highly effective, autocrat from the Waywork’s most brutal regime. Vex is determined to control the new Waypoint and whatever revelation or power lies on the other side.
Now humanity’s fate—to live in freedom or endless dictatorship—depends on just what that revelation might be. And who gets there first.
