Started on this series a decade ago and recommended it to my then-girlfriend. Then she outpaced me within a few days and wouldn't stop gushing about how great the sequels were, and I got so annoyed I never even opened the second book. This thread kind of rekindled a thirst for non-mainstream fantasy, so I've dived back into it. Has a really original and interesting "hard" magic system. Three of them, actually, although the first book mercifully just focuses on the one the lead characters start out having access to.

Noxluxe I just mentioned to OG a couple of days ago that I'd just found this trilogy in one of my bookshelf's but had never read it or might have started it and not gone on with it. It's weird that you'd post about it because I had no memory of even having it and here it appears again.

I have something of a man-crush on Marsh after re-reading the first book.

It's scheduled for after that but shouldn't be too long as I am devouring the Honor Harrington books pretty quickly. I'll be interested to see your feedback on the Mistborn books though.

The two sequels were okay.

There's also a sequel series, the "Wax and Wayne" books, set a few hundred years later. It's got more of a steampunk flavor to it, with 19th century technology existing alongside the magic. There's three books out so far of a projected four. There are also long-term plans to do two more trilogies after that. One set in a more modern era, and a futuristic "scifi trilogy"

There's also a sequel series, teh "Wax and Wayne" books, set a few hundred years later. It's got more of a steampunk flavor to it, with 19th century technology existing alongside the magic. There's three books out so far of a projected four. There are also long-term plans to do two more trilogies after that. One set in a more modern era, and a futuristic "scifi trilogy" Mhm, I've read about them and am rather curious to see how they've turned out. I've never read a series that suddenly branched into an entirely new genre, except the Discworld novels maybe, and the themes in Mistborn don't seem obviously translatable to Crime/Steampunk Western of all things. On the face of it they sound a bit cartoonish for my tastes, but I'll see when/if I get that far. That trilogy is one of the works by Sanderson that I genuinely like. Unfortunately, Brandon appears both very productive and inconsistent to me. The way I remember it, the first book was really good. The two sequels were okay. Haven't got enough of a sense of the second book to know yet, but that sounds discouraging. I haven't really read anything else by him. I think I was a bit too young to wrap my head around the Wheel of Time series when I first became interested in fantasy, working at a role-playing store and sneaking peeks at the book selection. Dragon riding was very much en vogue at the time, and there didn't seem to be enough of that going around in it to hold my interest. Speaking of, I might give the Eragon books another look at some point. Never read past Eldest, and lost interest before the next two(?) were translated into my native language. The overall story and themes weren't very original, in retrospect, but I very much admired the first book. I got my first cat because of those initial chapters of the main character sneaking food to his tiny pet dragon in the woods by his farm. And Jeremy Irons and Garrett Hedlund both stole my heart and imagination as Brom and Mutaugh in the movie, even if everything else was disappointing.

Plus it further explores the aspects of the magic system as technology advances. You can do some interesting things with bullets when magic is based on metal

It was some time ago. Also, the way I read has changed since the innocence of my youth, due to going through some writing experience. There is the sometimes the broken immersion from "I see what he's doing here", and sometimes the judgement of "I would have done it differently".

This made me chuckle a little because German is my first language and in German the word ''Mist'' means ''Dirt / Filth ''. Also the English word ''Gift'' means ''Poison'' in German, never fails to make me giggle when I read something like some person receiving lots of gifts. But never mind my ramble, carry on. Back 2 topic, I'm currently reading Black Company : Books of the South. Over the course of a couple books ''Lady'' has become my favorite book character (Besides Croaker, the main protagonist), and ''Smeds Stahl'' is now my favorite side character.

Interesting how The Silver Spike is listed as one of the Books of the South. It's really more of an epilogue to the Books of the North.

Interesting how The Silver Spike is listed as one of the Books of the South. It's really more of an epilogue to the Books of the North. Yeah I found it a little confusing too, thankfully I did my research to get the correct reading order, so I did start with the silver spike.

"Gift" means the same thing in Danish, as well as being our verb for getting married, weirdly. "Mist" doesn't have a direct translation. Closest thing is "Misted" which means lost. I do sometimes find it amusing when "Lord" is used with so much importance in English though, since it's essentially our word for shit. Likewise I imagine a native English-speaker would find our "skat", a term of endearment meaning "treasure" - or taxes - rather weird given that word's connotations in English. But yeah, "gift" especially sounds a little unnecessarily sinister with our language background. "Presents" invoke a less ambivalent image.

Finished "Season of Storms" so that concludes my trek through the paperback Witcher-verse. I still have the compendium, "World of the Witcher," left but I didn't want to read the history in it too closely until I'd finished all the books.

I finished 'The Law and the Lady". Was not a bad book, the author did just enough to keep me guessing in the novel. He had a few pretty good ancillary characters which i like and the heroine though having a few faults was not a total dunder head.

I am practicing my skill as an audiobook for an audience of one, dragging my girlfriend into the Warhammer 40,000 universe one book at a time. After the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies I'm reading this to her right now:

It's nice being read to tho', isn't it? That's always been a treat for me. Sometimes it doesn't matter what the book is, it's just being read to and hearing his voice.

I finished the 'Two Destinies'. I knew nothing about the novel before hand but it was really good. It, like a lot of 19th century lit had a few issues of believeablility but you learn to look past those. The destiny part of it refers to love at a young age that over years comes to fruition despite many obstacles. There was a titch of the supernatural added in and the obligatory highly sympathetic tragic ancillary character which added to my like of it. I am going to start another Wilkie Collins novel of that era which I know nothing about, this one:
