When Owen Pitt and the rest of the Monster Hunter International crew are called away to mount a month’s-long rescue mission in a monster-infested nightmare dimension, Julie Shackleford—Owen’s wife and descendant of MHI founder Bubba Shackleford—is left behind. Her task: hold down the fort and take care of her new baby son Ray. Julie’s devoted to the little guy, but the slow pace of office work and maternity leave are starting to get to her. But when a routine field call brings her face-to-face with an unspeakable evil calling itself Brother Death, she’ll get more excitement than she ever hoped for.
Julie is the Guardian of a powerful ancient artifact known as the Kamaresh Yar, and Brother Death wants it. In the wrong hands, it could destroy reality as we know it. Julie would die before giving it up.
Then Ray goes missing, taken by Brother Death. The price for his safe return: the Kamaresh Yar. If Julie doesn’t hand over the artifact it means death—or worse—for baby Ray. With no other choice left to her, Julie agrees to Brother Death’s demands. But when you’re dealing with an ancient evil, the devil is in the details.
To reclaim her son, Julie Shackleford will have to fight her way through necromantic death cults, child-stealing monsters, and worse. And she’ll have to do it all before Brother Death can unleash the Kamaresh Yar.
It’s one woman against an army of monsters. But Julie Shackleford is no ordinary woman—she’s one tough mother!

So finished Mission of Honor yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it, a bit of a return to form. Started "Rising Thunder" obviously going to be a lot of politics but its not so bad so far.

Finished Rising Thunder last night, enjoyed it and liked the political intriguing etc. but the whole how stupid are the Solarian League "Mandarins" plot line has become a bit tiresome, I understand the sub plot with Mesa but yeah. Weber again telegraphed a large plot moment in Filareta's battle IMO but I didn't see the Rajampet moment coming. Looking forward to what happens with regards to the Beowulf plot line but fear the synopsis for Uncompromising Honor has spoilt it unintentionally.

I am re-reading a must-read, classic book, Bram Stoker's Dracula(I did read it many years ago but I have the memory span of a fish, I am starting to get worried, I NEVER remember most of the books I read, even if I enjoyed it lmao). So far, so good!

you dreamt you read it and now you believe it ... No, no, no. I did read it! I know because I had to read it for school, I wouldn't be so sure otherwise Dang I read that back in high school, it's been so long... Yes, me too, 9 years ago. The funny thing is that I remember what I've studied and learned from it, but not book itself.

I think the first book it`s the "River God", followed by "The seventh scroll", "Warlock", "The quest", "Desert god" and "Pharaoh". I`ve only read the last two because they are the only ones translated in portuguese (i don`t know why this publishing company decided to translate only the last 2 books ).

So after a marathon of 14 books I finished the Honor Harrington main set of books. There some very high points and some low points but overall they were entertaining and good fun with some particularly good characters. Some of my disappointment though is that some characters were really engaging and built up and then would disappear for a few books or just disappear completely. I think the major disappointment was the fact that the whole Mesan/Manpower element wasn't really wrapped up. You have an enemy who has basically been pulling strings and manipulating nations throughout all the books and the conclusion seems to be the death of a main character. But then after that they are still hugely influential in a major battle that has a huge impact on many characters and in prompting a resolution with the Solarian League yet nothing is done regarding that. Anyway started a new book called Semiosis by Sue Barker as I accidentally bought it on my Kindle by double tapping when the device didn't respond. It was $1.99 so decided to not try and return it/refund it and so far its a bit of a slow burn but very different and keeps me wanting to know what happens next. It is essentially a book about a group of humans who decide to leave Earth and settle on a new planet and re-write the rules of society and how that works out given they discover the local Flora is actually sentient. I wonder if the author got the idea from Sherri S. Tepper's book "Grass" which is a really good book. Apparently there is also a book 2 about to or just released.

Speaking of 'alien' aliens, I recently went back and reread my copy of BlindSight by Peter Watts. I really enjoy those writers that actually take the time to develop an actual alien intelligence rather than just having humans in rubber masks running around. The major theme with these aliens, the "Scramblers" as called by the humans who encounter them, is that: "Can something have intelligence but not consciousnesses?"

Well I finally finished 'Portrait of a Lady' by Henry James. (1881)
I have to be honest with this one. Long, boring, awful ending that leaves you hanging, about two decent characters in the book as far as someone you would root for. The endless cliche I complain about re books from this era was once again forefront. A heroine who is supposed to be smart, independent, etc etc and who is a total dunder head that deserves all the suffering she gets.

The major theme with these aliens, the "Scramblers" as called by the humans who encounter them, is that: "Can something have intelligence but not consciousnesses?" Have you read Grass by Sherri S Tepper it's a really good book (one of my all time favourites and ranked as one of the top 20 sci-fi books) and is about human perception and alien life/intelligence is overlooked/dismissed because it appears animal like rather than human. That's a very simplistic summation but to go into more detail would be very spoilerish. Unicephalon 40-D you'd probably like this book Descriptio: "Generations ago, humans fled to the cosmic anomaly known as Grass. But before humanity arrived, another species had already claimed Grass for its own. It too had developed a culture...…
Now a deadly plague is spreading across the stars, leaving no planet untouched, save for Grass. But the secret of the planet's immunity hides a truth so shattering it could mean the end of life itself."

I know Wuthering Heights is a classic but that's exactly the way I felt about Catherine. Hated her by the end of the book. Scarlett from Gone With the Wind as well (though that was from the movie, not the book). And I could never finish Jane Eyre because I hated her so much.

Weirdly enough I loved Jane Eyre, I studied it in High School and read it over ten times and got 100% for the essays I had to do on it. I have no idea now why, TBH but that was 35+ years ago!!!!!

It ended quite abruptly and I wonder if the author just suddenly decided oh shit I have enough for another books so will just stop this one right now. Looking forward to the second one coming out.

So started a new set of Sci Fi books that I got for free on my kindle, there are six books in a series called The Void Wraith Saga by Chris Fox. I started reading it and thought hell this has a lot of content similar to Mass Effect and decided to check the release date and found it was subsequent to ME and a reviewer had said this about it: "It's like Battle Star Galactica and Mass Effect had a baby and that baby was raised by StarCraft" I can see how that works even though I am only 15% into the book!!!!! It's not the greatest Sci-Fi I have read (so far) but it's enjoyable.

Finally got through B. Sanderson's Oathbringer; I also read Edgedancer, which, tbh, I found rather annoying at first, but useful as ulterior context. Overall to this point I find The Stormlight Archive to be much better than the Mistborn series, more mature and better fleshed out. I have to give Sanderson a special award for consistency and care in building this world: once you're done reading, everything falls into place. And his buildup is really good . I am looking forward to the rest of the series...

I finished my long term reading project or the summer (I only read fiction when I am out in the park/beach on weekends or vacation during summer).
Origin by Dan Brown.
Overall a very enjoyable book. Typical Dan Brown material. If you read Angels and Demons or The Da Vinci Code, you pretty much know what to expect. It's another thriller with a plot focused on the intersection of science, religion and a little cryptography, again with Professor Robert Langdon in the leading role. Again, not everything seems quite real (especially for someone who is from Europe and has a little more insight into the actual culture of European countries). In this case, the book is set in Spain and I think the influence of the monarchy in Spanish society seems quite exaggerated. I mean, I know Spain is fairly conservative in general but I still feel it's quite over the top here. I am actually curious, I have a Spanish college and I really want her to read the book and tell me how ridiculous it really is.
Still, the plot is fun, the pacing is high enough for it to be a page turner and you don't dwell too much on some of the more spotty details and the actual resolution of the mystery is pretty cool (if not quite on the level of the Da Vinci Code).
All in all, if you like these kinds of thrillers, give it a go. It's definitely not the finest of literature but it's a fun little story.

I liked this one too. I hope if it's made into a movie, they don't ruin the story and characters like happened with Inferno.
