So have been ploughing through the Void Wraith Saga and some parts of the first 3 books were a bit of a slog to the pain I had trouble finishing the 3rd book. However Book 4 has started out at a cracking pace and am really enjoying it.

So have been ploughing through the Void Wraith Saga and some parts of the first 3 books were a bit of a slog to the pain I had trouble finishing the 3rd book. However Book 4 has started out at a cracking pace and am really enjoying it. So finished the sixth and final book in this series TBH it was good but disappointing. What is it with authors writing a series of books and not bringing them to a close? In Honor Harrington the plot thread with Manpower is not conclusively finished after 10 books which is OK if there is a commitment to write another book in the short term but to my knowledge Weber has not committed to that yet they were the ones pulling all the strings???? In The Void Wraith Saga it's worse, the main enemy are The Gorthians and the last book or 2 were premised at the good guys going out of their way to pre-emptively seek them out and destroy them. However instead they get into a war with another civilisation, discover some more clues to The Gorthians and engage an ancient remnant of the Gorthians and defeat it but that's it, end of 6 books!!!! Again the author Chris Fox has written prolificly before and since and yet didn't bring the "saga"to an end in regards to the major antagonists? Add to that that some main characters were completely sidelined and overall the last book left a bad taste in my mouth. Oh well it was free so guess you get what you paid for. Not over my Sci_Fi binge, have another Free Set that I have started and so far it's off to a great start. The first book is called Starship Blackbeard, description is: 7 novels. 2 complete series.
"In the aftermath of an interstellar war with an alien race, Captain James Drake is unjustly court martialed. But Drake won't go down without a fight. Rather than surrender, he'll lead his loyal crew into the frontier worlds to repair and rearm. Fighting the treacherous Lord Admiral Malthorne, Drake makes alliances with aliens and smugglers to clear his name and defeat treason in his beloved homeland."

"Here is a world," said the old gentleman, getting the sun a little more broadly on his back, "which a merciful Creator has filled with lovely sights, harmonious sounds, delicious scents; and here are creatures with faculties expressly made for enjoyment of those sights, sounds, and scents - to say nothing of Love, Dinner and Sleep, all thrown into the bargain. And these same creatures hate, starve, toss sleepless on their pillows, see nothing pleasant, hear nothing pleasant, smell nothing pleasant - cry bitter tears, say hard words, contract painful illnesses; wither, sink, age, die! What does it mean Arnold? And how much longer is it all to go on?"

The recently colonized world of Glenlyon has learned that they're stronger when they stand with other star systems than they are on their own. But after helping their neighbor Kosatka against an invasion, Glenlyon has become a target. The aggressive star systems plan to neutralize Glenlyon before striking again.
An attack is launched against Glenlyon's orbital facility with forces too powerful for fleet officer Rob Geary to counter using their sole remaining destroyer, Saber. Mele Darcy's Marines must repel repeated assaults while their hacker tries to get into the enemy systems to give Saber a fighting chance.
To survive, Glenlyon needs more firepower, and the only source for that is their neighbor Kosatka or other star systems that have so far remained neutral. But Kosatka is still battling the remnants of the invasion forces on its own world, and if it sends its only remaining warship to help will be left undefended against another invasion. While Carmen Ochoa fights for the freedom of Kosatka, Lochan Nakamura must survive assassins as he tries to convince other worlds to join a seemingly hopeless struggle. As star systems founded by people seeking freedom and autonomy, will Kosatka, Glenlyon and others be able to overcome deep suspicions of surrendering any authority to others? Will the free star systems stand together in a new Alliance, or fall alone?Third book of the Genesis Fleet, which is a prequel to the Lost Fleet/Lost Stars series. The focus is how the Alliance was formed, and features the ancestors of Jack Geary, Tanya Desjani, and others.

I finished reading 'Man and Wife' by Wilkie Collins.
I liked this novel (even though it had the normal heroine dumbo)
It had a few different themes, one concerning weird marriage laws of Scotland in the 19th century.
Had a part in the middle that did not work well with the author being critical of athletics as bizarre as that sounds.
And ended in a much darker but suspenseful way.
Long novel, skilfully written but jumps around a bit theme wise.

So finished the 7 Starship Blackbeard books and they were a "Jolly" good read!!!! The books have a good naturally evolving story, a good group of main characters and I found them compelling reading. They are not as technical in terms of the space combat such as the Honor Harrington books are and Honor is also probably a better main character than Captain Drake but the story of the seven books is probably more consistent in terms of quality. In regards to Empire of Bones, the main characters are probably more believable and there is a lot less pulling space magic out of nowhere solutions/plot devices (except for the "Space Leviathan" . In the last book or maybe the sixth there is some crazy stupid stuff where they are attacked by giant toads on a planet who are in turn attacked by giant robot turkeys which is kind of silly but does at least fit the story, believe it or not . Not quite sure what the author was going for with that but it did make me laugh and the robot turkeys are based on the main enemy race who are like vultures. If you are looking for some enjoyable, not too deep stories with some good characters that kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next I'd highly recommend them, especially if you can get them for free like I did. The author has also written a trilogy based on one of the characters in the series called (who reminds me of Isabella from DA ) "The Void Queen trilogy" which I also got for $0 and which I am about to start. The author has intimated there will be more books based on the original series as well.

It starts with the Quincunx. Looks rather cool and just translated in French. Wilkie Collins is also cited as a major reference

I read the Quincunx a few years back, did not know any other books existed after that one. I may check out the others you mention. To be honest the Quincunx was not my fav. The protagonist was a little shit.

Heirs of Babylon. Its a book about a soldier drafted to fight in the 3rd World War in its late stages where pretty much everything is gone from the chemical and nuclear holocaust that has raged for decades. The war is fought with scraps and leftovers, in this case with a fleet of exhausted beat-to-hell-and-back battleships. The unwilling soldiers are only kept in line by a brutal structure similar to the KGB secret police and forced to fight an enemy which is unknown to them.-

So been packing in the reading hours at night at the expense of sleeping more, it may be catching up with me!!!! Anyway finished The Void Queen trilogy which was good and discovered there is another trilogy after that. Had a break though and finished the seconf Semiosis book, it was OK but not as good as the first one. Then on to the next Michael Wallace trilogy regarding the Starship Blackbeard (Alliance Trilogy)and have already finished the first book Alliance Stars which was much of the same type of action as previously but with more emphasis on a different lead character and a new enemy. Still fun to read though. Have now started the second book, Alliance armada.

Just wrapping up John Keegan's The American Civil War. He's as good a writer as ever but damn, this book is a mess. Some of the chapters read like two or three different drafts were mashed together haphazardly. (Yeah, I know that worked for the book of Genesis, but it doesn't work here.)
Next up: American Carnage.

I'm reading two books at the moment: STeampunk Cthulhu, a collection of short stories featuring Steampunk settings and eldritch horror. SOme of the stories are very good. The other book is Becketts Jyhad Diary, a Vampire the Masquerade source- aund storybook. I love Beckett, the vampiric Indiana Jones, and another of my favorite VTM characters is also making an appearance: Saschy Vykos, the reason, I love clan Tzimisce so much. The book is fun so far - I especially liked, when Beckett and Theo Bell broke into one of Vykos libraries (yes, they have a few), which was hidden in a brothrel and Theos line: 'Only you break into a brothrel to steal an old book'
And I don't know, why I am so seldom in this thread - I'm constantly reading
