I love this series and the characters but I can't binge read it. Kathy Mallory is someone I can only take a book at a time with fairly long breaks in between. The characters are so well done and the plots are always good, but the main protagonist, while quite believable, is not someone to visit with for an extended period.

Well I have done something I very rarely do and that is stop reading one book (around about chapter 10) and start up another book. I might have to wait till summer to restart this sci fi series when I may have more patience. I was really not enjoying the 1st book at all. Back to Wilkie Collins novels for now.
I usually have a hard time not finishing a book once I've started it, even if I'm not enjoying it, but I've had two instance where I just couldn't do it.
First was Stephen Baxter's Manifold trilogy. I made it through the first 2 books but by the third, I couldn't take any more of the same people who had zero personality. I loved the concept though, and experiencing basically the same story told in a different way was intriguing.
Second instance was the Forgotten Realms Spider Queen series. I made the mistake of looking online for more info on certain characters, only to have their fates spoiled for me. That ended my interest in reading the rest of the series (I was not far into book 5 of 6) since I had no desire to see my favorites meet grisly ends while the bad ones came out on top yet again.
I'm in a similar situation now, trying to get through a book I just can't get into since I'm not invested in the characters. I kind of want to see how things get from where they are to where they end up (hints have been provided on what but not the explanation of how) but at only 1/3 of the way through, I don't know if I'm gonna make it.

My issue with the book I ditched was that within 10 chapters it essentially crammed every single cliche into the book you could and the writing was just not good. The people were acting in a totally unrealistic fashion. It's a 4 book series so I am having some buyers remorse.

I also very much enjoyed Carol O'Connel. Though it's years since I last read any, I hope I have read them all. But I'm not sure the phrase "quite believable" is the right expression? Because that's my kinda of beef with the Mallory character. The stories are immersive and engaging. And you accept the protagonist. But I don't really think 'believable' is right. She's both a psychopath - guided only by clinging to the justice principle, instilled by her stepfather - and empathetic whenever it suits the author. I can reluctantly accept it (because I can look at myself 🙄) , but I preferred to not dwell on that false note when reading them.

That's the situation I have with current books I am and have been reading as well. The characters aren't very engaging and the interplay of the "Special 5" and their helper AI's are like a teen romance novel, its just too much. I am just not interested that Kelsey has strawberries and cream every other meal and that Kevin only eats Hamburgers unless his wife kicks him under the table when he tries to order them!!!! There is so much repetitive commentary on the space battles and the AI's comments that the author probably cuts and pastes most of it every book, he probably has a macro key on his keyboard for it. BUT I got through the first five books and am keen to see where the story goes and ends in the current trilogy (I am on book 2) BUT I won't be reading anymore of them.

When the Colonial Marines set out after their deadliest prey, the Xenomorphs, it’s what Corporal Hicks calls a bug hunt—kill or be killed. Here are fifteen all-new stories of such “close encounters,” written by many of today’s most extraordinary authors. Set during the events of all four Alien™ films, sending the Marines to alien worlds, to derelict space settlements, and into the nests of the universe’s most dangerous monsters, these adventures are guaranteed to send the blood racing— One way or another.

I accidentally wrote a whole thing so I'll put it in tags. It was interesting reading an analysis of this style and have the person doing it be cleary-eyed, knowledgeable and clearly biased towards China for a change. It's updated some my implicit preconceptions of how and why China and their tech-scene functioned. I wish he would have discussed the potential role of the businesses at the forefront of the AI revolution, he mostly considers them in terms of how they'll affect the US and China, but also notes that 1) a number of individual businesses are key players 2) that AI driven data companies (or data driven AI companies?) favour monopolies and that US anti-trust laws have a key requirement that it needs to show that it hurts the consumer which won't necessarily apply when algoriths are better BECAUSE they have that data monopoly 3) the amount of money at stake here is game-changing. So what happens if Google is the one at the forefront of a breakthrough on the scale of DeepMind? When it's in-house and a company secret?
But anyway. The bias shows up in ways like when he's describing China's inherent data advantage with it's more 'relaxed' feel towards privacy, some of that's fair like how they leap-frogged credit cards and went straight to paying with phones and how superapps have a much broader, less discrete division of labor than most apps in the West but he also completely fails to mention the social credit system the government has been rolling out. THAT is going to cut into spheres simply inaccessible to Western companies and I'm sure it's why Kai-Fu Lee is so confident that China has an unbeatable edge when it comes to on the ground data about actual people.
Anyway, the rest of my feels is that I'm a little humanities bitch and did some critical theory recently. Some of what Kai-Fu Lee is talking about writes reads like the worst/best kind of horror (depending on whether you like horror): the kind where the person telling the story has no idea how scary it is/they're being. What he describes is total commodity culture, where your personhood is either explicitly or implicitly standardized, assessed and responded to in a way that maximizes efficiency, productivity and inevitably profit. He has this vignette where he sees a vision of the future where he's being led through grocery shopping by his AI infused trolley which is communicating with his fridge and cupboards at home and telling him that he needs more fiber in his diet, then the cashier (who isn't really a cashier anymore, he gives them a different title to fit their new role) aided by AI algorithms about Lee, knows that his wife usually gets X wine but he recommends the higher quality special wine they just got in instead. Being human in a system like this is almost incidental, your purpose in this system is to be a vehicle of cash (Lee) or to add a veneer of humanity to what the AI has decided (the not!cashier).
Now it's not like this is all wildly unfamiliar, you can and have been able to, point this out in contemporary society for a long while now but the thing with neural networks is that when it has enough data, when it has enough people to analyze in a particular context, it's capacity to predict and evaluate all your little quiddities (which, when aggreggated across hundreds of millions of people in a similar context won't even turn out to be 'your' 'quiddities' any more anyway) and for someone to turn that seamlessly into an efficiency money funnel is unprecedented. There'll be no space to simply be that isn't passively contributing to your consumer and/or citizen report.
The last third of the book is devoted to an epiphany Lee had after an near death experience. Now, the conclusion isn't revelatory in fact it's kind of trite. It's no doubt true, that isn't what I'm criticizing, but I feel like only someone in STEM would have the self-confidence to unironically anchor an entire book in a revelation that most people don't need to almost die to realize as if it's this core wisdom that needs to be brought down from the mountain. Anyway, this leads him to suggest that the wide-scale joblessness that AI will cause in the coming decades should be primarily filled with compensated pro-social behavior: ie the government basically pays people to care like talking to lonely old people, teaching a skillset to people, helping kids cross the street etc. Now beyond this partly being the same concern as before (the total commodification of human behavior) there's also the question of: what does caring mean? I'm sure most people would agree that it hits different when 1) you're taking care of your sister's toddlers because she's overworked and they're horrendous v 2) you're taking care of your sister's toddlers because she's overworked and they're horrendous but also this'll make you qualify for your state-mandated paycheck. Does monetarily subsidized caring supplant the core idea of what it means to care? Selflessness? Do they coexist?
Interesting, thought-provoking, alarming, shouldn't be read uncritically.

I can reluctantly accept it (because I can look at myself 🙄) , but I preferred to not dwell on that false note when reading them. The thing that sticks out about Mallory is the passage below (minor spoilers and quite sad) It was winter then, a sudden storm, and a feverish young Kathy Mallory had crawled into the last remaining telephone booth in New York City, the only one with a door that she could close against the stinging snow. She had fed money into the coin slots, a daily habit and the only constant of a childhood on the streets. More than a thousand miles away and years away, a dying woman had written a telephone number on the little girl’s palm. All but the last four digits had been smudged off her hand before that terrible day had ended. Kathy continued to obey long after her mother had died. Though she had forgotten the reason for these telephone calls, she continued making up numbers to replace the three that were missing. Whenever she heard a feminine voice on the line, the child would become inexplicably hopeful and say the ritual words, It’s Kathy. I’m lost. None of the startled women on the receiving end of these calls had known who she was, thus giving themselves away as impostors. That night, one of them had cried into the telephone, ‘Won’t you tell me who you are? How can I – ’ Click. And another connection was severed, another woman left in tears, and hope died. The child had become an addict of hope, and the best part of this game was that she could get it back again every day, any time she wanted it.

I am currently about 2/3rds of my way through The Blood Mirror by Brent Weeks, book 4 of the Lightbringer series. I have all four in Trade Paperback, waiting for #5 THe Burning White to come out in TPB but I don't think that will be much before the Spring of 2020 so I am taking my time in reading the one I am on now.
I really like Brent Weeks' writing. It began by randomly picking up book one of his previous trilogy called "The Night Angel: The Way of Shadows", being attracted by the artwork on the front cover, when suddenly some random guy comes up to me and says "Definitely, do yourself a favour and buy that book. Buy all three of them now, don't wait. I have all three of them in Hardcover and I've read the whole trilogy five times. It's such a great trilogy. It's like The Godfather meets The Last Samurai meets Lord of The Rings.....There's adventure, magic, political intrigue, sex, action, comedy and some interesting world-building. Such a great story. Buy it now. Go quickly, trust me, you won't regret it." And so I did. I brought the first one home and sat down that afternoon (it was a Tuesday on the Christmas break of 2).....and by Thursday evening I was finished. Nearly 800 pages in just over two days. Of course, when I was at the story, they were out of the other two books so I had to order them, it took about two weeks. The longest two weeks of my life at that point, or so it seemed.
So when The Lightbringer was announced in 2012-13, I immediately knew I was going to buy it because I had been so engaged in the author's writing; trouble was at that point I had just started going back to College and my schooling was all-consuming for the next two years; the only thing I read were text books. I lived in my room for the next two years, barely anyone knew I existed. So I bought the mass market pb of the first book but never read it. Then they discontinued the mass market for that series and re-released it all in Trade (which I have). I bought each book as it was released and I have enjoyed them all. Now that I am working and have a great career, I read as often as I can.....Though lately I have been playing Jedi Fallen Order instead of reading.

Have you read the "The Word and The Void" by Terry Brooks, I immediately thought of that when you described the books above? It sounds like the Night Angel books maybe like that but a more adult and deeper version of that.

In a nutshell a "Knight of The Word" fighting to stop the world being over run by Demons using only a magic staff that has to recharge after being used. There are 3 follow on books from the Word and The Void which I have one large book that ma be 3 books (checks google) actually its 4 books combined the one I have.

The Word and The Void, is part of The Shannara world but set in modern times and is the prelude to a set of books called The Genesis of Shannara IIRC. In a nutshell a "Knight of The Word" fighting to stop the world being over run by Demons using only a magic staff that has to recharge after being used. There are 3 follow on books from the Word and The Void which I have one large book that ma be 3 books (checks google) actually its 4 books combined the one I have. Honestly, I lost interest in the Shanara series once he merged it with The Word and the Void. Which is weird since up until then I liked both series I lost interest at the beginning of the Jerle Shannara stuff but re-engaged with The Word and The Void, can't remember how I came back to it TBH.

Damn good books in my opinion!!!!! Is this a series and what's the name of the first? Leviathan Wakes is the first book in a series called The Expanse. It's going to be eight books. Seven are out. The final one should be out sometime next year. Also there's a bunch of "fill in the blanks" short stories and novella featuring characters from the books.

I haven't read much lately, but there is now Christmas vacation.

Damn good books in my opinion!!!!! Is this a series and what's the name of the first? It's probably my favourite Sci-Fi series of books, it has some good and some really good individual novels and like the series the first book takes a little while to get going as it builds background and story. One of the better crews in a Sci-Fi series I think, all are different and play a different part in the relationship and most have interesting individual stories and backgrounds with good character development over the series. If you decide to read them and enjoy the first book then I recommend reading the short stories and Novellas, the Wikipedia page link shows when you should read them. Three are prior to the first book Leviathan Awakes so if you want a taster maybe try reading the first of those but it will lack some context if you don't read the first novel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Expanse_(novel_series)
