Hey AnDromedary did you read the paperbacks or read them on Kindle? On Amazon on the Australian site book 3 isn't available and the four book set is in Spanish????? Been trying to look on the US site but it always diverts me back to the Australian site. I got the paperbacks from a friend. They seem to be hard to come buy (EDIT typo, that I am going to leave as a pun ) these days. Even on the us site of amazon, they are only available as "used", I just checked. EDIT: Wait, I looked again and there seems to be "mass marked paperback" version that is in stock: Hope that link works for you.
Not sure if you are into that sort of thing but Audible seems to have really nice audio book versions of the entire Hyperion saga as well. I checked out the first few minutes of Endymion and the narrator is really great.
Thanks for that but the link is just for book 1 yeah? I can get book 1,2 and 4 but 3 is missing and the whole 4 book set is in Spanish????? Haven't tried Audible but not for the want of Amazon to try and push it on me at every opportunity. I might do a free trial if I can as I am just not sure it's for me.

I just did a new search just for the author and it shows all 4, so not sure why it was being excluded previously but there is n image associated with Endymion???? Thanks will look at reading them next, have just started reading The Mistborn Trilogy which I am enjoying so far but have not read much.

Last Shot - Daniel Jose Older This novel is a strange meld of action comedy and gore-fest. I usually don't read overly violent novels and, in fact, swore off James Patterson because his violent descriptions seemed so unnecessary to the story - so maybe that's just on me. Aside from that, the book is actually a lot of fun, with a hilarious assortment of characters (an Ewok computer hacker, a Gungan that speaks fluent Basic, a droid wandering the galaxy fighting crime), a few highly implausible twists (the main antagonist wore a green cape, so Han just randomly follows some dude in a market in a similar green cape), and an action packed last act that suitably barrels ahead into its climax. The plot, a couple of years post Return of the Jedi, centers around an extortion attempt on Lando, which precipitates his team up with new father and misplaced husband Han Solo, in an attempt to track down a device for an extremist cult leader. Obviously, fulfilling such an extortion request would not end well and so our heroes find themselves in a bit of a conundrum. It's just good luck they both have so few qualms about double crosses. Coincidentally, both Lando and Han have each crossed paths with the extortionist in their previous lives as smuggler and gambler, and so the novel contains two shorter adventures of the younger versions of these characters. I'm not sure how true this telling of Harrison Ford's version of the older Han Solo is. Han, here, seems less self assured and competent than his movie persona, though that may have been in service of humor. The author definitely captured Alden Ehrenreich's portrayal of the younger goofier version though. Lando, is not the most fleshed out character in the movies, so it was good to read a standalone adventure with him obsessing over his capes, and copilot L3 obsessing over droid rights. For some reason the author thought older Lando from the original trilogy had a goatee - maybe he grew it back for a while? Not sure what happened there. The story is mostly hilarious, with a few Star Wars in jokes, "You know, the thing about cutting people in half is that it doesn't always..." [blaster shot to the face] "...take." The gore was a bit of a surprise. I'm not sure how or why this was approved, but one minute I was ready a fairly light hearted adventure of smugglers navigating the criminal underworld and New Republic government, getting up to all manner of hijinks, the next people are getting shot, and grizzly violations are taking place. I don't want to give too much away, cuz this isn't on the dust jacket so it is clearly meant to be a surprise, but, damn some of it was just gross. I complained earlier of how unimaginative the droid army of the Separatists were in Thrawn: Alliances. Here, the antagonist's use of droids is much more creative. The guy flies around in a space suit with two high powered blaster cannons, too small to accurately target, and blasts fighters to smithereens or throws kinda gross droids on them to corrupt their operations and shut them down for easy destruction.

I am always pleased when I see a movie adaptation to a book I have read that is done well. I got the 2015 movie version 'Far From The Madding Crowd' by Thomas Hardy from the library and watched it yesterday and today. It was done really well, excellent actor casting, the pace of the story was well done and the environments were really good.

Kings of the Wyld from Nicholas Eames I like it! First of all, it is super evident that the author has played all of the great late 90's early 2000's RPG's, especially Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. The book does NOT borrow heavily from those games -like say lore or world-, its just the whole story and the details are structured exactly like an epic D&D adventure, like those games mentioned before. And it works surprisingly well for this book. I find the writing style to be easy yet not clumsy, -and full of self irony- which can also be said about the storyline itself. Emotionally, it is quite the rollercoaster, it goes from lighthearted humor (which especially the RPG players will understand and love) that definitely made me laugh many times to really dark/sad places - but it never stays too long at any of those areas. Really, the mood is all over the place all the time, which fits an epic, unpredictable quest/journey really well. I find the characters likable and complex, they feel real without the author going apeshit on describing them. Also, I'm not sure what it is, sometimes I have a really hard time taking descriptions from books and turning them into mental images, sometimes I find it very easy. The amount of descriptions, or the words used is not the deciding factor. Anyway, with this book I find it exceedingly easy to picture the world, which definitely increases the joy I experience reading it. Minor gripes: sometimes it gets a little cheesy with some game / D&D references, but that's really a very minor gripe. Second gripe is the use of modern words, I know this is nitpicky but I do not like fantasy settings that use the word FUCK or COOL. Just does not fit IMO. That's about it, so far. Just ordered the 2nd book, Bloody Rose.

Master & Apprentice - Claudia Gray A Star Wars prequel novel to the prequel trilogy, this story of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan sees them called to the planet of Pijal, currently ruled by a Jedi Regent until the pending coronation of its young queen, to help secure a treaty with the Republic that would open a new hyperlane and bring commerce and prosperity to neglected systems along its route. However, Pijal is on the fringes of the Republic's jurisdiction, and so slavery is still legal and mainly practiced by the Czerka corporation, a galactic company heavily integrated with the planet. Into this environment the Jedi must reconcile their code with their mission, to root out a terrorist organization staging attacks to disrupt the treaty, while trying to maintain balance and achieve the greater good that the new hyperlane will bring. It is a passable enough story, with a cast of characters with enough quirks to hold my interest. The real draw for me was seeing the dynamic between Padawan Obi-Wan and Jedi Knight Qui-Gon, two of my favorite characters from the movies who last for only one otherwise fairly annoying installment. It's a blast reading them work together. Unfortunately, they are within a plot that was somewhat predictable, and that when fully revealed seemed kind of stupid - in a sort of implausibly nutty but entertaining way. Additionally, this is the first Star Wars novel I've read that seemed to drop references to the movies so profusely that it bordered on the annoying: - The Jedi prophecies get mentioned, and all seem to reference events from the films - Obi-Wan LOVES flying - The movie's planets keep being mentioned, when there are 1000s of other planets that could be mentioned intead - Dooku shows up in flashbacks and his turn to the dark side, if not explained, is at least further elaborated upon - Like Thrawn: Alliances we get another crypto plot to weaken the Jedi and undermine confidence in the Republic. I actually find this annoying, and much prefer Cloak of Deception's approach, a novel I didn't like nearly as much as this, where the corruption within the Republic seemed more a natural result of greedy interests. - Someone mentions that when it comes to mastering Force abilities "there are many paths," which I'm sure is there to explain the sequel trilogy - Why is Queen-Amidalla-from-TPM-who-is-not-Queen-Amidalla in this novel? The answer is kind of hilarious.
So, anyway, it's not bad, but don't expect any grand insights into the human condition here.

Star Wars: Legacy of the Force: Betrayal - Aaron Allston Well... fuck... that ended poorly. There's nine parts to this? I might just skip to the end. It's the story of the Sykwalker and Solo clans, 40 years after Return of the Jedi, who find their allegiances split between the Galactic Alliance and Correllian independence, at the potential inception of a new galactic civil war. As usual, the circumstances and sentiments of both sides are manipulated by unseen ne'er-do-wellers hell-bent on evil Sith mischief. Is no one ever evil just on their own in this universe? Eh, maybe just Han's cousin, Corellian politician Thracken. It's a good read, with several implausible action set-pieces involving the original heroes unwittingly facing off against their own children. I can see why Disney didn't use this in their sequel franchise, as the history here is quite, uh, extensive. Suffice it say we find the galaxy far, far away much changed since the movies. No longer are Han, Luke, and Leia (and Wedge, where is Lando?) scrappy members of a rag-tag rebellion up against overwhelming odds; here we find them, their kids, and the Jedi institution firmly entrenched in government, an agency taking on military missions, with spies gathering intelligence, extensive planning, and practiced simulations of their proposed assaults. It took a little bit for me to get into this version Star Wars (wha… they're famous and living in luxury apartments in downtown Coruscant?), but once I did the story really took off. What starts off as a Jedi mission for the Galactic Alliance against a Corellian military target to weaken the increasingly belligerent government, quickly escalates into a quagmire with both sides seeking an exit to save face - a quagmire that certain parties are all too willing to maintain and use to their advantage. And the heroes are making tough decisions... oh the DECISIONS! You know the kind - greater good, rights to self determination - lotta trolley problems being faced, followed by introspective questioning. Like the Darth Bane and Revenge of the Sith novel, it is far more interesting getting into the headspace of heroes fall to the dark side in the novels, than it is watching it implausibly happen on screen (me: "Ani, what's your wife going to think?"). I must say though, Jacen's turn is sort of ridiculous. Can you really trust prophetic Force visions in a Dark Side asteroid, when being counseled by a Sith? You know she's killing people left and right just to "test" you, c'mon man!
I can't speak to the quality of the rest of this series, but if you see this at a used bookstore somewhere and are looking for a quick Star Wars fix I definitely recommend picking it up.

So just finished book 2 of The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson, thought the first book was great but I missed Kelsier very much in the 2nd book. It's still good but I have found Vin's Super Powers to be a bit OTT and Elend suddenly becoming Mistborn was just a bit too much. I hated Tyndwil dying as well.

Third book in a prequel trilogy to the Monster Hunter International series. About a Hunter operating in New Orleans in the early '90s (before the Christmas Party of '95). Everything is different in New Orleans. The food. The climate. The monsters. But that’s just the beginning. The real reason New Orleans is so different is a larval Great Old One growing day by day in power and just about ready to pop. If monster hunter Chad Gardenier can’t convince “the powers that be” to get involved, not only New Orleans, but the entire world is going to fall. Now on the outs with the U.S. Government and in exile from his usual job of saving the world, Chad must rally the forces of light against the coming darkness.

Well, I just gotta say, brace yourself for The Hero of Ages. That will be QUITE the ride! Also, try to get a copy of Mistborn: Secret History novella for more about Kelsier. Edit: but read Hero of Ages FIRST! Massive spoilers in Secret History. Yeah HoA is already a bit of a chore - sigh. I hope it picks up consistently, it engages me enthusiastically for parts and then it's just OMG get on with it!!!!! I'll see if I can find Secret History, thanks again for your help.

Reading HOmer's Iliad and The Hero With A Thousand by Joseph Campbell......or more like, trying to finish them both. Love Campbell's works, wish I could find his others. I read Iliad and The Odyssey back to back, I consider it one of my greatest reading achievements in terms of perseverance.

HoA has one of the most jaw-dropping conclusions's I've ever seen. Totally worth it, imo.
