I don't read so much any more, as I listen to audio books. And I recently picked up an oldie but a goodie again. Fey: A Vince Lombard Story.
Its not the most well written book I've ever read, but the characters are likeable enough, the jokes still make me laugh on the third read, and the author is a really nice guy. Helped me give a copy to my cousin by sending me a PDF of the novel, after I emailed him asking where I could buy a printed copy (no printed copies of this novel unfortunately).
Also picked up the Next and Final book in the Lost Colonies series on audible too. Going to get into that book, after I'm done with Fey.

An old unfinished novel from my book piles (the book cases are all full I'm afraid) I'm trying to complete Banks. After this I've only got 'Against a Dark Background' left; that one was interrupted half through many years ago. When I'm now trying to finish 'Algebraist', I think I know why I never finished it originally. I'm kinda feeling it's hard work to read? Is this really the same author who wrote ' Inversions'? <- My favorite Banks, 'Surface Detail'? 'Look to Windward'? 'Consider Phlebas'? 'Matter'? I struggle through the pages. But maybe it's just me and the wrong time of the year? Or maybe sleep deprivation between work and saving my precious Kerbal astronauts?

Do you have a recommendation for a starter book from him?

Do you have a recommendation for a starter book from him? 'Inversions' is my favorite. I wish he'd written more like that. 'Consider Phlebas' is great and also a great start. It gives you a good insight into Bank's major "character", Culture, and how Culture became what it is in his other Culture-novels. If you don't like stories with,.. uhm "ambiguous endings" , you should probably stay away from 'Use of Weapons', 'Matter', and 'Against a Dark Background'. Also 'Feersum Endjinn' is pretty unreadable. Don't understand why he made that experiment. Possibly because he got a computer to play with and could. Who knows.

I'm currently rereading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. It's about two mages in England during the Napoleon war, who are first allies and later rivals. The story is very intelligent and funny and very british. For people, who might be interested in the story but don't like reading: BBC made a very good mini series out of the book. It's one of the best transitions from book to movie, I have seen so far imo. www.goodreads.com/book/show/14201.Jonathan_Strange_Mr_Norrell

Ok, so I finished Fey. For the third time I've run through that book, and enjoyed myself with it. Though I will admit, it got to be a bit of a slog the last hour or so. Even still, I would absolutely recommend that novel to anyone who has an interest with a mostly sci-fi novel, with a tiny bit of fantasy in it. I've moved onto star carrier, and...I'm not liking where the novel is going. Its still just as well written as the last one in the series is. But the directions the story is taking are directions I'm not a fan of. Using technology to force people to forget others, that a secret government (which controls the SOL system from behind the scenes) deems to destructive to continue to exist, instead of just killing them and leaving friends and family to remember them and stew over their demise.
I don't like the secret government portion to begin with. But then add in removing peoples entire lives from the memory of others, including family, and I'm not sure I'm going to continue with this novel. All that said, it is a compelling story so far. We'll just have to see where it goes from here.

I bought an Ian Banks box set of his 1st three novels to start with.
Hey question for all, who owns a kindle or one of the other electronic books and how do you like them? Though I still like the old, book in the hand thing books are more and more expensive, taking up too much room and I think some electronic readers might have features I'd like (do they have a feature to zoom in? Iv'e had a few books where the type is too damn small)

Iv'e had a few books where the type is too damn small) I was just about to post in the "what makes you happy thread" my kindle. I read about 250 or more books a year (I'm a very fast reader) and I would like to be buried with my Kindle pls. YES there is zoom! Amazon even recently included are more dyslexic friendly type font option. My only real experience with a dedicated e-reader is with the Kindle family so I cannot speak to any of the pros/cons of other devices. I got the second or third gen for my first Kindle- and I've had four since because they came out with features that I wanted ASAP and I read so much it's totally worth it for me to upgrade. So I have a paperwhite. It is my precious. I love that it has e ink and also that it's back lit in away that it doesn't effect your eyes (tire them) like regular transflective screens. Also the syncing with Kindle ROCKS. I can read a book via my Android phone/laptop/tablet/actual Kindle and it syncs pretty fast and very accurately typically. Frankly since I picked up my first Kindle I never looked back and I'm a life long library obsessive. I spent my entire childhood in libraries and adore paper bound books but my brain quickly adjusted to e reading and it is now very hard for me to give up the sheer convenience factor. When I travel I used to bring 10-15 books and it was a hassle. I love to read in the beach for example and picking just ONE book or two was kind of agonizing for me lol. So I have hundreds of books loaded up. I have at least 30 books I haven't read. You can also return a book very easily if you accidentally purchase. I think it's very reasonably priced for it's absolute beauty- it does precisely what I want. I have every other normal tech devic that would sufffice but I prefer having a dedicated reader vs multipurpose and the screen is devine IMO. During the daytime I just read at a smaller font/no light. At night when I put my toddler to sleep I put my font much larger and put a bit of light on so that I don't strain my eyes. Being able to increase and decrease font is tremendous even if you don't have any eye issues if you read for hours like myself- your eyes get tired after awhile and it's nice to give them a break by increasing font size. The catalog has increased hugely and also you can send books to your to your Kindle via your account. I went to a book shop a few yrs ago and was happily surprised to pick up 15 paperbacks for a series I was into that were in brand new shape and I felt super lucky- but they are now just sitting on a book shelf and I cannot bring myself to use real books anymore LOL. I've grown accustomed to the dictionary function/the highlights/notes and bookmarking. I've never lost my place in the Kindle like I used to for YEARS with regular books. So yes Beer, get ONE NOW. lol

I'm obviously a fangirl You can read in direct sunlight and it does not require you to use the back light! This is Bookerly, my fave font choice, Amazon created it: Also this is image of me holding my Kindle on my back porch just now in direct sunlight. I'm using the second largest font (so there is there is one more that is larger than this). I think this is the smallest font or the second smallest also in Bookerly. Being able to read in direct sunlight is one of the reasons why I got a Kindle in the first place. I had no use for being denied the ability to read when it doesn't get dark until 8 PM in Texas in the summer LOL. If that were the case I would have just stuck with paper books. Edited: had to reduce size of pic lulz, also I really need to pop this out and clean , sorry!

The Korean War: An International History by Wada Haruki. Fascinating when he covers the diplomacy, but I get lost on the troops movements parts. Then I distract myself with readin the Badass of the Weeks mini-bio-sketches.

So I stopped reading Star Carrier: The Lost Colonies (there is an entire series named star carrier, so I have to be specific about which one I'm reading). I got about halfway through it, but I just wasn't enjoying it. The characters reactions made no sense to me. I could understand their reactions to the secret government who removes memories. But then they started having to deal with androids, who were formerly humans that the secret government forced into becoming androids. And they not only accepted this as normal, but then actually took the guy who created them aboard their ship, had more shipped aboard, and started modifying these androids to be combat capable. All the while acting like the whole thing was just another day at the office.
WTF? Where's the anger? The outrage? Where the disgust, sadness, or even fear? So I'm in between books/series atm. If anyone has a solid realistic scifi series/novel, spy fiction novel, or Noir novel, let me know. I need a new series to sink my teeth into. Going back through cold days in the Dresden files atm.

Spend a bit of time in the last days reading a pretty old book from my father (published 1961) about northern gods & hero myths (like "The sword Tyrfing", the "Niebelungenlied" - I'm sorry didn't find a good title translation, "Beowulf" etc.). A pretty nice book but with damn old wording sometimes.
Another one is his frisian elementary school book. I love such old books. Lots of cool frisian tales in it - a lot nobody knows today or never heard of. Lots of interesting fantasy themes & motives.

I fought switching from paper books to an e-reader for quite a while, but we literally had no room to put new books. I read a lot so that was a major concern.
I do not regret switching over. The ability to embiggen the type is a great relief to my poor tired eyes. I can switch between books almost effortlessly. I can change fonts, not that I ever do. Amazon has done wonders with e-readers to make them practical and convenient.
One further thing, there are a plethora of independently published books that are available only electronically. The free books are typically what you paid for them, but every once in a while an author with a series will make the first one free. There are services that notify you about bargains via email. I use Bookbub, but there are others. Most books published by major book publishers cost $7.99+. I have found good reads that were independently published for as little as $2.99. Switching over has saved not only space and time but money as well. And when you have all three of the primary elements of the universe going for you, then you've got something.
It's not a consideration for everyone, but romances in particular are more and more only available electronically. Probably of more relevance to the folks here, Baen Publishing has an early release thing where you can snag one of their books early before it is printed. There are several small publishers of science fiction and fantasy that are releasing the backlists of established authors only on e-formats.
Lastly, if you read on your cell (mobile) phone and you use an otterbox for a phone cover, it won't melt or self destruct if it falls into the water. DAMHIKT.

There is Brad Thor - but I think its more political thriller than strict spy. Gorky Park by Martin Cruz Smith - older but good.
If your interested in Sci-fi space opera there is Marko Kloos - Frontline Series. If you like Mass Effect you will like this series. Also Hugh Howey's Silo series and The Bern Saga (Bern Saga reminded me of Battlestar Gallactica with a bit of Douglas Adams thrown in. Though Howey has finished the last Bern book he will not publish it until he can decide which of the two endings he wants.) Halfway home and I Zombie are good too. S.M. Sterling's Change series is alternate sci-fi.
It isn't space opera, but I really liked Nathan Lowell's series " Trader's Tales from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper".

Currently reading the Way of Kings I finished Mistborn a few months ago, and I was interested in reading more of Brandon Sanderson's work, since he's a really good writer. So I picked up the first book in the Stormlight Archive. It's very well written so far, but it's a little harder to get into than mistborn. And it focuses on a few characters instead of just Vin/Kelsier/Elend, which is refreshing. The protagonist each seem interesting, so I like it so far. I've already picked up the second book.

Thanks for the recomendations. Brad Thor is an author. Were you refering to a book title, or one of his series? I'll have to look into those other novels. I was kinda out of ideas on what to get next on audible. I just picked up the first book, the narrator isn't that great, but he makes some scenes seem rather flat. And with my rather english sense of humor, that added a bit more comedy to them.

No wasn't refering to any specific book but the author in general, only read a couple of his books and can't remember the names. I think the first book was Lions of Lucerne. I think there are about 16 or so books in the series.
His book Freefall is free on Amazon Kindle today not sure about audio sales though.
Cool beans, thanks for the recommendations. I've added a few of them to my audible wish list. Though I am a bit hesitant about the Bern Saga. I always have trouble identifying with female protagonists. And I don't typically like feminism in media. So if I start seeing signs of 'I'm tougher then any man in the universe' then I'm probably done with that series. But the premise is intriguing, so Its on my wishlist.

In the Bern Saga she reminded me of Starbuck in the Battlestar Gallactica reboot. The other important character is a guy but your correct and he is a second character not the main.
Maybe the Marko Kloos books are better for you. The protagonist is a male in the military. Kloos was in the military not sure in Germany or USA and I think he drew from that. The main character reminds me in a way of Shepard (male).
Maybe, but sometimes military books can be a bit boring to me. And don't misunderstand, I don't mind strong female leads. Quite the opposite. I just don't like leads that just turn into girl power, rather then equality. That's mostly why I like scifi, that and the idea of exploring the unknown.
