I am about to finish the Ultimate Star Wars and Philosophy collection, and I got say it was a weird, weird collection of essays compared to the Star Treck one. Not nearly the same quality of writing and clarity of subject. A lot of rambling tbh, and very kitchen-talky. Really out of the blue stuff, like one essay that covered the scene of Leia strangling Jabba as a symbolic representation of the unachievable body image fighting the society's fear & aversion to fat ???? Ooooookaaaay.... There were some better bits and pieces but overall a bit of a let down. Recommend the Start treck one though, much more thought provoking.
Prob gonna go back to reading the "The Impossible State. North Korea, Past and Future." Want to finish it. The first part was pretty interesting with the history of Kim dynasty, but I am not sure I can sit through the US policy chapters.

Boy, was I wrong about North Korea book. Despite the dry language, I find that the impact is really profound and makes me want to revisit my own confused thoughts on the events of the late eighties and nineties, as I have never moved past my teenage angst about it and the whole flight response to it. I need to find me a decent book on the twentieth century history of China. I need to know more about why they destroyed my life before it even started and if they had a choice I wish my grandfather was still alive because I could have asked him a lot of questions...

Martin Heidegger, the kind of books that keep my interest are those with philosophical ramblings, especially those focused on the ontology.

I just finished this after I got it for Christmas: Jim Butcher's always been my one of my favorite fantasy authors, but this one has magipunk, dystopias, talking cats, and airships. Forget "one of" and "fantasy". With this, Butcher has gone up to "favorite author, period."

Let me know what you think. I haven't read any of GRRM's books outside of the main ASOIAF series, so curious to know how the spinoffs/prequels stack up and how well they mesh with the primary storyline.

Oh, I think they're definitely worth a read. They're a bit softer and lighter than the main series but there are only two main characters so the cast would thin out after quickly. It has the same sense of action-consequence and it is still a Westeros world. It also takes place a good some years before the start of the main series
I recommend checking out the Hedge Knight if you're thinking about giving it a read. It sets up the tone of the Dunk and Egg series up fairly well. The graphic novel version is great too although as it follows with graphical adaptations, it leaves out some bits of the Hedge Knight.

Recently? Well I just finished this. For those curious its not a half bad read, its got the usual assortment of bias that'd you expect from this type of book but its very well sourced despite that which made it tolerable, while I ultimately learned little to nothing I wasn't already aware of it did cause a shift in perspective on a few issues I was less then clear on prior to reading it, which prompted me to study the figure even more. Which I think is supposed to be the point of books like this.

Oh I loved the Dunk & Egg illustrated series, the illustrations were pretty well done and it was cool to see more of the Targaryens. I had gotten it from a friend of a friend and was pretty sad when I finally had to give it back because it's such a pretty book. Smelled amazing too!

This latest in the HH series is a disappointment. There's hardly any mention of the character HH fans want to read about and everything else is mostly a rehash of the previous book with forgettable chars. Awful. Wondered what happened to DW.

I read Vahe Garwood's Bastion Saturn, which was fun, and Starship Eternal from MR Forbes. I might pick up the next one in that series, since the premise was so interesting and the book better than I expected.
I also read Fields of Wrath, which was like a pile of stereotypes led by a Marty Stu who could not fail. I must have muttered "Oh, please" half a dozen times when theain character magically solved something no one else could.
Up next is Under a Tell-Tale Sky. I'm back on my sci-fi kick. It may or may not be anticipation for MEA.

Gulag archipelago
Published in 1976 in desperation after the secret police in the Soviet Union secured a copy of the manuscript.
It's a romantic tale of how the Marxists in the Soviet Union massacred over 50 million people from the 1918 - 1956 under Lenin and Stalin, based on official data, surviving prisoner reports, the political and ideological mindset of Karl Marx' ideology held by the the left wing communists to purify society so only true communists would inhabit the new society which would of course be utopian.
Comes in 3 volumes! Volume one arrest and incarceration underground in the subterranean prison system and mass destruction of peasant farmers which held land followed by starvation leading to cannibalism. Volume 2 the creation of the Gulag archipelago fed by waves of innocents used to fill quotas required by the state fir dissidents. Volume 3 torture, mutilation and myrder in the forced labour camps of Siberia.
Fun for all the family, and a good look at ideological road ahead of Bernie Sanders, the Labour Party and the political left's move to enforce quotas and create a socially just society in the name of the collective good.
Still think Trump was the worst thing to ever happen? Not even close.

The Lies of Locke lamora , by Scott Lynch I'm not quite done yet, but it's a dam good Fantasy novel. Enthusiastically recommended. The reading kinda coasts for rather long. It's not really hard work, because there's so many amusing constructs and details, so the risk of stalling should be rather low. As you approach halfway though, you should start to be hooked. And passing 55%-60% you'll probably frantically read the rest in one session. (I couldn't, because I had to work) It has two sequels (which I will of course now also read), but the really cute thing is that this is a complete novel in itself. A finished story. No cliff hanger, nothing unresolved. Much appreciated by me.

I was reading the last novel in the Darth Bane trilogy, Dynasty of Evil last week and it was fantastic. The trilogy shows Darth Bane's rise from a miner to Sith Lord to how he establishes the Rule of Two. Seeing the story with Sith being the protagonists is very interesting. You also get a closer look at their code and way of life, as well as the attitude of the Sith during this time.
It's a treat for KOTOR fans due to the Revan references. This is written by main writer of that game so it makes sense.
