In DA2, companions would belittle you, argue with you and turn on you. And you can loose them and leave you completely distraught/ flaggerbusted ( Isabella in my first PT), you could kill the companions. The friendship/rivalry concept was brilliant.

I mean I think the best part of DA2 is just how much options and different variations you can have with regard to Hawke's interactions with companions. First you have all the story-related decisions and the different reactions of the companions to them. Then you have the friendship/rivalry, which adds a completely new angle to Hawke's relationship with their crew. And then ofc there's the romances, giving the player even more options. I guess that is what makes DA2 so replayable - you could play it three or four times and still see only a fraction of all the possible scenes. I mean, I completed my third playthrough earlier in January and I'm already itching to start a new one Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. I think it's a real shame that they scrapped the friendship/rivalry feature in DAI along with the protagonist personality feature. In comparison, DAI seems a lot more shallow in companion content. For me, DAI personalities are better than in other Bioware games but don't really come close to DA2 crew. It's great to have Varric, though.

Yes. Although I missed the option to have general dialogue with my companions (since you can only converse with them during these brief "missions"), I really liked how they could affect how different things played out in the game. Varric can solve things with his glib tongue, Anders can save Bethany/Carver in the Deep Roads, Fenris makes dealing with Arishok different, etc. Then there's also the Friendship/Rivalry system which adds another variable to the game since it affects your interaction. I also liked how these companions seemed to have their own things going on, how they are more than ready to voice their opinions and how their life didn't just revolve around Hawke. Scenes like when Anders confronts Meredith after your "apostate hunt" and how Fenris can rat you out if you lie to her. All these things are one of the major reasons why I have re-played DA2 the most out of all three games and which I think is something this game did best. It seems like I discover new things about my companions every time I play.

Yes, I really missed how you could not talk to the companions after the mission at the beginning of each Act. Most of their games let you chit-chat at will, even if that's just the same selection of dialogues. I liked how they added a lot of scenery dialogue and commentary on the quests, but the PC interaction imo needed about 3x as much dialogue as it had for the length of the game, spaced out through the Act, not coming in clusters of content and then... nothing. They should also have initiated banter with the PC, not just with each other, because it was really odd, always talking behind Hawke's back.

Completely agree, the cast of character in DA2 is the best among all BioWare game. Game has its fault no doubt, but I have become more forgiving the more I played it, where as I get more critical over time toward DAI.

DA2 banter is hands down the best. Oh, maybe DAI banter is good too, but good luck actually hearing much of it. I wish I could drag my companions around Skyhold to trigger banter like I could in Kirkwall rather than praying to Andraste someone might speak in the next zone.

The reasons laid out in this thread pretty much illustrate why DA2 is easily the most entertaining of the current lineup of games in the DA franchise to me. Despite my strong affinity for certain companions in Origins and Inquisition, DA2's cast comes together the most as a solid whole for me, with a setting that's just about perfect for a band of total misfits, even if the backdrop was sadly hamstrung by copypasta and simple textures. Despite all its problems, it retained a great deal of replay value because of how much I loved all the dialogue.
