I meant more of a steam powered situation. I have yet to hear of anything remotely like gasoline. For all we know, cotton gin is water wheel powered. Thedas could lack coal?(oh yeah. Branka and her smokeless coal) and a Natural gas? Oil? Or, funny, could it be that in a world of magic and Lyrium, they've never bothered to find another source of energy?
It makes Tevinter look cheap if they can't even fix a building. That building in the background, you can't even use half of it without doing crazy gravity fade stuff!
Yep... it's an empire in decline. The war with the Qunari, losing much of their holdings, apathy have taken their toll. I know there are some codices that touch on this, including one on this very point.
So, in Downtown Abbey, the rich who kinda lived off of serfs ended up going into severe decline. Dukes were having to sell off entire land holdings that had been in their families for hundreds of years. But the Abbey got a smart guy involved, and they spent a crap ton of money to update their methods and change what they were selling. Goats to pigs kinda switch. And they managed to survive.
I kinda think Lyrium is too expensive for them to continue to consume to keep these buildings together. But they'd have to let the buildings finish their self destruction and shift suppliers and get new contacts. So they don't. The rich want to maintain. The dwarves certainly don't want them to switch energy sources.
But this gets away from the original post.

Hrungr have you ever thought of the idea that a Mage can learn how to teleport or levitate to go places? Sure, it would require extensive study and practice to master these skills, but it'll be worth it.
Alternate forms of travel, ride a griffon just like the Wardens did in DA Last Flight. Or dragons.

True teleportation seems to be beyond even the most powerful in Thedas. But, levitation/flying seems certainly within reach (we've seen Cory fly at the Temple of Mythal without shapeshifting).
Griffons would be awesome, but feasibility might be an issue. By the time Trespasser starts, it's only been 3 years since the 12 eggs were discovered. Now, I don't know how long it takes them to mature or when the next game is going to start, but I can't imagine any breeder would risk even a single griffon for at least a couple of generations. Mind you, there is an opportunity there for a "Rescue the Griffons" style mission...

Calpernia's short story was full of references to Minrathous' crumbling infrastructure and it puts the blame on the Magisterium.
"The narrow street, its marble crumbling like old bone and littered with rubbish, was one of the quieter avenues in Minrathous."
"As the seller measured out the resin, Calpernia looked around the market; past a juggler tossing painted wooden staves, a group of poorly-dressed figures limped through the market, laden with heavy bundles and staring with frightened eyes. People jeered."
But Calpernia was looking not just at the refugees, but the lichen-stained, crumbling stone of the square in which they stood, and the aging towers of Minrathous rising beyond."
"It was Magister Anodatus, a man she knew better than she’d like. He was descended from Archon Ishal, and his family was traditionally responsible for the upkeep of the great Juggernaut golems that stood, long silent, outside Minrathous’s gates. They even got a stipend from the city coffers for it. But Anodatus seemed to think the money was better spent on lavish parties, gambling, and dwarven-made trinkets."
" At least slaves had good reasons to be preoccupied. The Magisterium chased petty grudges, forgetting that Minrathous’s walls still had cracks from the last Qunari assault; the great Juggernaut golems Anodatus was meant to restore were silent; and their empire grew moss between its flagstones. But what did that matter, so long as this week’s rival was humiliated?"
You can see why the Venatori so quickly fell for a darkspawn's "Make Tevinter Great Again" schtick.
also you know how griffons were extinct? would it be so terrible that some eggs were preserved by one of flemeth's daughters, like dragons were preserved?
I don't know if you're being tongue in cheek, but The Last Ride book, a pile of Griffon Eggs were found. and In World of Thedas, there is a scrap of a journal entry written indicating that they'd hatched in 9:41 ?Dragon.

I'd imagine that researches under the Inquisition would be able to re-create a very very rudimentary Eluvian network that Solas and his agents can't use.
They already have plenty of samples of broken Eluvian shards that they can work with. Then they also have Morrigan and the Well of Sorrows knowledge. Dorian and his crew might be interested in doing the same since he did mention how he'd like to study and recreate (?) the Eluvian.
From a gameplay pov, it's not needed due to fast travel, but lore it can be very useful.
