In my area (the Smoky Mountains) you pretty much have to be being a dumbass to get attacked by an animal You bring up a fair point. With civilization such as it is these days, you have go pretty far out of your way to find a good hunting spot. I mean for duck and geese I can just travel down a road for a hour or so, for an Elk though? I have to travel half way across the country. I think here in Europe I could not rely on game like deer because even after a major cataclysm hundred thousands of survivors would still be around and go out hunting driving animals into extinction in a matter of weeks. And our forests grow smaller every day thanks to industry and growing cities. In the US in the 30's after the stock market crash people nearly drove deer into extinction because they shot and ate them all. It took deer populations several decades to recover. And back in the 30's there were much less people around then there are now. In fact, having tons of armed survivors hunting for food in the woods sounds like a really dangerous situation, people would slaughter each other over food if they weren't lucky themselves. I think in such scenario I'd have to lay low and hunt small game like fish, bunnies and birds...and sadly probably looting the two legged animals as well.

I can purify water for 10-20 people, for at least 3 years... I have a couple systems, extra cartridges for those, and lots of potable pills for after the filters are dead.
My recurve needs restringing, and my compound is actually broken and needs replacement... In my 20s, this would have made me break out into a cold sweat.
My steely knives are all sharp and have their purpose.
My issue these days is a bug-out vehicle. It is on the list.

Iβll say it again and donβt give a fuck about who gets offended or angry: Anyone who hunts and kills defenseless and innocent animals should be shot and tortured, hell, they should try to be hunted and killed themselves like that so they can experience what thatβs like.

And sure, I canβt do shit about people like that but I can hate and despise them as much as I like yes. Anyways, I said my peace, carry on. I think you got it all wrong, context-wise. We are talking about a scenario here where you cannot go to a shop or the grocery store and get your food, the first thing that happens in a major catastrophe is that people loot grocery stores. Unless you have lots of food stored back in your home you would have to rely on natural resources, this includes animal meat gathered via hunting and traps. The other option is starving to death as there are not nearly enough plant sources available to survive, especially not in densely populated areas, or in the northern hemisphere. I love animals but I would not hesitate to hunt in order to keep myself from death, its a natural thing to do. And starving is an agonizing way to go. But if you think this thread is shitty and you have better ideas about survival in such scenarios please share them with us - as I said, this a thread to share all kinds of useful information about survival.

One thing that's worth contemplating even if you do not go full survivalist is to plant a vegetable garden. While modern commercial varieties of vegetables do produce more and better edible bits, heirloom varieties are far better t reproduction, meaning you typically only need to buy the seeds once. Heirloom seeds are available from commercial vendors (including Amazon) and via seed swapping groups (easily found via internet search).

When the zombie apocalypse happens, I'm sure it would be nice to have the skills and conditioning of a Navy SEAL but you don't need that much. A more likely scenario is you having a stroke of bad luck, ending up in a situation you haven't been in before.
Keep a cool head. Easier said than done when you are confused and in an unfamiliar place, but it is what matters most. Take it slow. Rushing to conclusions wastes energy and stress makes you sweat and pee more, loosing precious water.
Listen to your body and take care of it. Your feet are going to carry you and your hands have to do a lot of intricate work. Things like blisters and small cuts may seem trivial in a day-to-day life but will fill up your consciousness much more when you are already tired and demoralized. Don't add any unnecessary agony to an already bad situation.
Don't take chances unless forced to. Can this food be eaten raw? Does the water need to be purified? Can I make this trip before it gets dark? Again, without a cool head you can't make rational decisions.
If you end up in a situation with other people, lead by example. You don't need a psychology degree. If you keep calm and stay rational, they will look in your direction and do the same. Maybe in the zombie apocalypse scenario you would have to make selfish decisions at the expense of others. Otherwise you can draw strength from each other.
A little RL story: I once went on a boat trip. Stupid in retrospect because we had seen the weather reports warning of bad winds heading our way but there we were. And I got sea sick. Like never before. Call me melodramatic but it was so bad I at one point considered jumping over board and get it over with.
I guess my point is don't be Rambo and don't trivialize the small things. Specially if you have never experienced them before. I didn't respect the weather and in my ignorance I didn't think sea sickness could be more than a little nausea. Tools and skills are great. The "quality" of the boat got us ashore and my clothing probably saved me from getting hypothermia. But it was the determination of my friends that kept us afloat while I was green faced and totally incapacitated for half a day...

Anyone else watch Primitive Technology? I find it fascinating myself. OneWomanArmy I agree with you, in non-survival situations. If its life or death, I'm pro hunting. But if its for fun, then hell yea, string all those bastards up by their heels. And giggle while they howl in pain. But I do think about outdoor survival a fair bit. I just don't have a lot of answers. Same with disaster prep. If disasters do happen, we have some canned food, and a case of water in the basement. And...thats the best prepwork I can manage myself. At least for now.

I won't like it, but it has to be stopped. That said, I don't know that I'd call for it to be illegal either. Just because I don't like something, doesn't mean I think it should be illegal. I think hunting purely for sport where the meat is wasted and just some horns or skulls are harvested is unnatural and despicable, but other than that I have no problems with hunting. In fact, if hunting was a widespread and accepted way of getting your food we would not have to imprison animals in dirty, little cramped spaces where they are raised under nasty conditions just to be executed for meat. Going into the woods and hunting an animal is what other animals do as well. Its one of the most natural things ever on this planet and I wish I had the opportunity to gather my meat like this as well. Unfortunately we have fucked the earth to death and overpopulated it so this is not possible, we have to rely on animal prisons.

There's legit reason to kill animals even if you don't harvest the meat, such as varmint hunting feral hogs that ruin crops.
There are however some of us that get pretty inventive with varmint carcasses, such as this fellow that feeds the rats he kills with his air rifle to animal scavengers..
But why feed it to scavengers when you can prepare them for your own consumption?
There'd be no shortage of rats in a survival scenario and I must admit, cooked rat meat does look tasty.

Mickey and Minnie better hope they don't end on the wrong side of a survival scenario, or for that matter, Pepe Le Pew.

Kale had better not survive the Apocalypse, I draw the line at kale.

You are entitled to your opinion and thats hardly offending, but let me tell you that you would not even be here to complain if your forefathers did not hunt and kill defenseless animals to feed their families. Why you call this thread a shitty thread though is beyond me, its full of useful information. Itβs shitty because all people talk about on this thread, is basically advice or encouragement in regards to killing animals. And sure, I canβt do shit about people like that but I can hate and despise them as much as I like yes. Anyways, I said my peace, carry on. It's either hunt and kill or resort to cannibalism. Theoretically speaking, anyway. If for some reason all BSNers are in a bunker to survive the nuclear holocaust, and you refuse to eat hunted animals, should we cannibalize you? If so, I have dibs on your upper arms.
