When you are exposed to fallout its best not to wash your hair but to shave it off completely since it traps particles so well.

Here's some vids about a different kind of survival, that of trying to survive incoming gunfire by using cars as cover. Paul Harrell has done some vids on the effectiveness of using cars for cover vs various pistol, shotgun and rifle calibers. In this first vid he tests 5.56mm and 7.62x39mm (skip to 11:18) And he goes into further detail on the subject with these two vids that also test various pistol calibers.

If I get stranded on a mountain or desert or whatnot, I'm screwed. If there's a nuclear war or an ice age or blah blah, I'll walk 10 metres to my nearest castle and close the gates.

Also a not so well known survival information I want to throw in here, since I come from a country with lots of mountains running stream water is drinkable without purification at altitudes above 2500 meters or 8000ft. Most bacteria that is responsible for making your guts go into chaos mode don't thrive well up there, partially because of the thinner air. ( But NOT in south America!) And thats not just a theory as I do it all the times, and have to. If you do serious mountain climbing you cannot carry all the water you need up there, you totally need natural water sources. Especially since higher altitudes make you lose water faster.
Oh and since we are speaking about safety in the mountains, one thing I always see when hiking is, on warm sunny days, people go mountain hiking with very light clothing and no warm backup clothes. Its extremely silly, always take a jacket and rain proof gear with you. ALWAYS, no matter how warm the day is, do it.
I remember passing a couple climbers in shorts and t-shirts near the summit at over 3500 meters / 11500ft altitude, they had tiny backpacks so they surely did not have wet gear or warm clothes with them. It was an extremely hot day, I was sweating like a rain cloud. 15 minutes after having passed them temperature dropped below freezing and I got into a blizzard, my trousers were frozen stiff in minutes and the blizzard lasted for 4 hours. I have no idea what those lightly clothed climbers did but that was a life threating situation for them. Can't call for rescue in such a weather and climbing back down took 6 hours, and there is absolutely zero shelter up there.

FM 21-76 US ARMY SURVIVAL MANUAL <- This is a good starting point. It covers some psychology as well as basic survival skills. Also goes over man-made disasters and dealing with other people, which are topics I don't see as often as what you should do if you're lost in the woods.

Always maintain a view of all available exits within your vicinity, so you can use them a moment's notice.
Seriously, without a solid exit strategy to get you out of danger, you might not even have the chance to even employ long-term survival options. And even after the initial danger is passed and you are in the process of surviving, never assume you're now safe.
Thus it's still a good idea to continue to be aware of the exits, if you need to bug-out a second time.

The real test when it comes to surviving in the wild in such a way, is seeing whether you can survive on such food sources without losing weight to any significant degree, because that would mean that theoretically such life-style can be maintained indefinitely. Barring that, the goal should be to gain sustenance for a relatively small expenditure of energy, at the very least, even assuming an overall deficit and weight-loss, if such loss occurred slowly enough, the survivor might be able to at least maintain themselves until the end of the emergency. I remember there was this famous case of a guy who simply tramped to Alaska into the wilderness to survive there. Despite him hunting squirrels and small game on a daily basis it took him more calories to hunt than he get out of the meat, even though he was using traps. Surviving is hard work, he was on his feet nearly 20 hours / day. He could not get back because the river swelling blocked his return route so he slowly starved to death. Talking about game, there are two more important factors: * If your only meat source is rabbit there is the looming danger of eating yourself to death. Rabbit meat is extremely low on vitamins and essentials so while you DO get your calories and protein your guts expend vitamins and essentials to digest it. You will slowly die. Its also called the trappers illness because this happened to many trappers who only caught rabbits in winter. * Diseases and parasites. Many game animals, especially deer, can have pretty nasty and dangerous parasites and diseases which are often very hard to spot, you really need training to identify them and meat needs to be either handled and prepared very carefully or even discarded. Also many of those parasites survive roasting over a fire, they often only die at temperatures so high that you'd burn the meat into an inedible black brick. This also goes for any bacteria toxins the meat contains. So getting meat is no guarantee that you will survive, in fact it can mean the opposite if you are unlucky and careless.

Shawn Woods is at it again with survival tips, this time about harvesting cattail plants for food. As a kid, I learned about cattail tubers from a book about a runaway kid that was fed up with "modern living". My Side of the Mountain, Jean Craighead George, c1959 Edit: they are alright. I mashed em like the kid, then added milk butter salt and pepper. (Bland as hell otherwise, just fiber-y)
