Which one of you beat him on nightmare? Without running out of the room?
In my latest PT, I did beat most of challenges I sat for myself ( no running out Nexus, Motherfucking Templar hunter due in Anders quest, Giffre-Beacon etc. But could not beat Xebenkeck without running out of the room like coward.

You can do it Seriously: finding the tomes is a bit more challenging than the normal fetching quests. There are some pretty tough battles and Xebenkeck in the end - which means more fun (and of course not too big a challenge for a DA2 veteran like you). It's a nice and creepy sidequest

First I need to find all the books ... I admit, I've never had to have the patience to deal with it. Huh. Maybe one of these days I should actually find all the books. I usually get one or two and then totally forget about it.
The "Evil Tome" locations are:
Chantry upstairs (on the opposite side of where Karl is) Throne Room Cave at the Bone Pit (not accessible until after Hubert comes back, I don't think) Cave on the Wounded Coast (I usually do this one while working on Aveline's quest) Nexus Golem chamber on Sundermount
The quest is bugged however. If you don't opt to destroy each one, the location for Xebenkeck won't unlock without using console commands (had to do that in Nathan's game since I forgot about the bug).
If you have Merrill in your party, you get massive rivalry for destroying each one (you only get a little bit of friendship for reading/using the first one).
OT: I'm not enough of a masochist to play DA2 on anything harder than normal.

I like that quest. Collect the tomes. Kill a bunch of demons. Good fun. It's a significant part of Act 2 with about 4 challenging boss fights , very hard to pull out without cowardly kiting and needing effective use of combo mechanics. You all are missing a lot if you don't go through quest.

I've done it three times, I think, but all on normal. Sweet sweet Merrill rivalry points. I remember them just being slightly worse than any other fight. Well, except for the one in the Golem cave. I go in for that one with more preparation and ya, I guess it's sort of kiting? I always lock my party in the hallway, run in, run out and fight the group off all funnel like. Kiting I always thought of fighting in little groups, or drawing one off from the main. My hallway plan just seems like crowds control to me.

The tome fight in the golem nexus is easy peasy compared to the one just before it against all the guardians. Of course, by then you are worn out and depleted from the first fight (unless you come back to do it later, which.....why would I do that? ) so that does make it bit more challenging.

Well... Wait, now I don't know which fight I'm thinking of if two happen in the same place. :/ But I'm pretty sure I don't double up the battles in there

I suppose it's possible to activate the tome fast enough that it appears all the demons are from the tome. However, that's not the case. The demon horde consisting of arcane horrors, desire demons, a revenant, and more rage demons and shades than I can count, are the nexus guardians. There are around 3 waves, the first one appearing once you enter the chamber with the golem. Once they are all defeated, the golem says the gauntlet has been passed. After that, there's still the tome to deal with.

I've never gotten my attempted nightmare runs far enough to reach Xebenkeck, somehow always end up stopping around early Act 2. So yeah, tips for strats and which class to best try it with would help as well... when I finally get around to doing it?

Oh yes. Sorry about that. That prior fight officially does not count as fight for the Tom, but it's hell on nightmare. Last time I beat it without running out to the corridor. .

There are around 3 waves, the first one appearing once you enter the chamber with the golem. Once they are all defeated, the golem says the gauntlet has been passed. After that, there's still the tome to deal with. I am not sure you can activate the tom before killing the guardians. Actually it's 5 waves, and until normal difficulty there is pause after wave 3. See wave information here. dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Abandoned_Thaig#StrategyIgnore the kiting strategy. . More often than not the Arache horror will one shot your entire party hiding in the corridor if you don't kill enemies fast enough. And it's cheesing. 2 strategies worked for me. 1. Get some fire resistance ( optionally spirit if you can for boss level abomination and desire demon). Kill the minion shades very fast and than rage demon fast enough. 2. Pile up cold damage, immediately kill the rage demon. In this case next wave would appear immediately after you killed first rage demon), send your tank to desire demon, while rest of the party kill shades and abominations. And in either case. 1. Rage demons and the arcane horror are priority. 2. Offence is best defence yet you need to have good defense. 3. Shield Anders ( you will need his haste). Have your rouge strategy set to Back to back when anders is attacked. 4. Do not stay in a place except for your warrior who should be taunting and engaging desire demon and revenent. Avoid center of the hall. 5. Hit and run works here. Actually I found out concentrate fire on one enemy can quickly overwhelm you non tanks. 6. Rouge with decoy is very helpful. 7. Do not let rage demon live too long. They will steal your potions. 8. Have anders switch between Cold ( as long as rage demon is alive) and electricity staff ( for everything else). He should have elemental weapon and heroic aura on. 9. Save Haste and winters grasp ( careful about the friendly fire) for Rage demon and Arcane horror. Definitely save petrify, horror for Arcane horror. 10. Absolutely not let the Arcane horror ( who will appear on wave 5), wiggle it's hand or teleport. He can one shot even Aveline. I save before the fight and experimented with different party composition. Easiest was with Fenris DPS warrior , my shadow-assasine rouge, Anders, merril or Varric. I actually did it without anders ( rouge , Fenris, Varric and merril) but needed a lots of potions including rock armor potion. Even Sebastian works fine here. His guardian angel talent is lifesaver. None of this worked in actual Xebenceck fight. The revenent asshole appears too soon.

Remember to run away as soon as you see rage demon disappear in the floor, which will happen. If your keep running it will probably appear behind your tank or the dog ( your dog don't give a fuck. Me thinks it's immune to critical hits). Judicious use of tempest ( if you have) and chain lightning is preferred. Pull lots of minions around your tank and unleash tempest. Set strategy chain lightning on enemy staggered. Do not let Varric ( or anyone) his debilitating talents like rythming triplet waste on shades or abominations. If you have misdirection hex, save it for the revenant. Set anders to ranged/defensive and target of tank/nearest visible to simple attack. Do not use talent that will attract aggro. Properly set Merril can more than take care of herself. Use her and anders stonefist on enemy atracking anders. I refrain from using mind blast, it can kill my glass canon rouge who is following anders. Prefer horror over petrify ( both of which is reserved for nasty bosses) unless you have petrify upgraded to brittle the enemy.
These are general strategies that work in every battle.
