Hello everyone, I've returned to DAI for the holidays I got it in my mind to try my hand at some more serious DAIMP on PC. I played some when the game came out for being mainly an SP player I didn't get far and left around the time the duelist was released, currently I have around 130 prestige, I only promoted once (keeper) and unlocked some other classes. So now when I tried to play again I discover new factions, new difficulty levels, new classes and I'm a bit lost and I'm looking for some advice/pointers: - One of my main issues I had /and apparently still have) with DAIMP was having nearly constants "Could not join the session" errors when looking for matches, taking between 5-10 mins to find one I could actually enter, most of the time with lag. This does not happen in loads of other MP games I play and if I host the session it's okay, though most of the time no one is joining (I understand that the player population in DAIMP on PC is kinda low. Is there any solution to be tried to improve the situation? - Having low prestige and gear around ilvl 10-18, soloing Routine with anything but an AW is painful and the xp return with the constant deaths is seriously low. Got a couple of "2% health on kill" rings that help a bit. I know I need more promotions and better gear, should I focus on the AW and promoting for extra willpower or should I focus on Constitution or Cunning promotion, if so with which class knowing I might spend most of my time solo? - With the new factions and difficulty levels, knowing my low prestige, gear and promotions, is there any sort of requirement guide for when I can try Threatening/Perilous/Nightmare in solo and/or Group? -Is there any crafting I should be focusing on (armor or upgrades)? - The big question (and I'm hoping for some positive input): Do you, experienced players, knowing that DAIMP support is dead and that the PC population is small, believe that a new player today can still have a chance to struggle and progress through the difficulties and improve his characters in a timely manner or should I dial down my expectations and maybe just give an occasional go at DAIMP but not expect any major progress unless I can invest heavily for months on end? Sorry for the wall of text, I hope you can clarify some of my doubts and I hope I'll see some of you in-game Thank you for your attention.

I see your wall of text and raise you another one. Welcome! I'm kind of the opposite of you in that I've never started the single player and only ever played the multiplayer. And, I've been more than happy doing that. I'll try to answer most of your questions as best I can. Yes, since you last played, a lot has changed but a lot has also stayed the same. I'm not sure about your specific connection issues. Hopefully someone else can help you with that. This game does have an annoying region lock though. If you are in a well-populated region, the US, for example, finding a game is not that hard. That being said, I mainly only search for perilous and nightmare difficulty games. I think threatening has a little larger of a player base but I have no idea in Routine. Don't expect to find heartbreaker games, not that I think you would be looking for them just yet. Also, some players play in private lobbies. You won't be able to find them unless they are on your origin friends list, which brings me to my next point. Try friending some people so you can join any games they might be in from origin. Check the google docs in this sign-up thread: bsn.boards.net/thread/454/damp-sign-bsnALSO in that thread, make sure you have the two expansions for the game downloaded. They are free (I think). If you don't, you will have a much harder time joining the game and will only have access to the small player base that also doesn't have the expansions downloaded. Second, soloing is torturous to me. I hate doing it and the XP is terrible. Every harder difficulty gives more XP than the last. Something you may not realize is that the added XP for all teammates in a game is given to everyone in the game. So, playing with teammates speeds up the leveling and promotion process. A lot of this game is centered around good gear and promotions. Good gear isn't that hard to get. The best gear is hard to get. Promotions come with more time invested in higher difficulties. For now, your 2% heal-on-kill rings are probably your best bet. The Arcane Warrior is also one of the best classes for new players. Just equip your highest base damage staff so you can get the most barrier possible from any damage you inflict. But, you should probably try to bring up your stats a little more evenly. Easiest warriors to stay alive with include the Lego, the Reaver (has health recovery on every hit). Easiest rogues include the silent sister and not sure what would come next since she is in a league of her own. Easiest mages include the Arcane Warrior, Saarebas, and possibly the Elementalist. The hardest to stay alive with in the beginning (in my opinion of course) is the Avvar, alchemist, and necromancer. But they all become fun a little later. This is probably my most important advice. A lot of the damage in this game inflicted on you from enemies is physical damage (swords, arrows, etc.). Your armor plays a huge role in reducing this damage type. If you walk in with your stock base armor, it offers very little protection. You can craft better armor for any of your characters but it takes a lot of materials. If you can get 1,000,000 combined XP with any warriors, mages, or rogues, you unlock special drakescale armor (it's the very best armor in the game, also the ugliest...) for all characters of that class. 1 million XP sounds like a large number but remember, any teammates you play with add to this XP, any higher difficulty you play adds to it, etc. This armor, which will then be given to you in a free chest in the store, will make you almost invincible in routine, make threatening way easier, and give you a chance in perilous. A good way to have a chance at decent weapons comes from dragon runs on the Ferelden Castle map. You (or someone else on your team) will need to craft dragon calls (don't use cotton!). You ring the gong on the third zone and then fight the dragon on the 5th zone. If you kill it, it has a chance at giving you a decent dragon weapon. I THINK (but would welcome verification from someone else) that you can get blue-rarity dragon weapons from threatening dragons and get the better purple unique versions afterwards from perilous dragons. Other than that, you have a chance at getting better weapons from any treasure room in the game or by buying chests in the store. I don't think there is really a guide for when you can try the other difficulties. It depends on who you are playing with. Some people could solo perilous and nightmare making the game very easy. However, you will get bored if you are one-shot killed in NM and have to watch the rest of the game from the fade. With unlocking the drakescale armor, you should be able to do threatening and possibly join others for a chance at perilous. Nightmare is a big step up and the armor isn't good enough to keep you alive without decent promotions and gear without good teammates. For your final question. This game is a grinder. You can't expect huge progress in a very short time period. However, I've always found it fun. You have to remember, all of us that are still here were at one time where you are now. I remember when I first started, watching a reaver destroy everyone while I was dead in the fade. And that's what I wanted to do so it inspired me to keep playing. Then, I would watch someone destroy nightmare on their own, and that's what I wanted to be able to do, etc... So you won't be able to tell if you want to commit to the grind without giving it a fair chance. The beginning is by far the hardest and most frustrating. But it gets way better a little afterwards once you start to get better gear, promotions, character builds, friends, etc. And remember, promotions and leveling up comes a lot faster as you get more promotions and can play in higher difficulties. Anyway, hope some of that helps.

To resolve Connection errors you need to open certain ports. Details on THIS PAGEIt is also advisable to enable UPnPI had same problems, but when I opened ports and enabled UPnP connection errors were gone.

Sorry for the wall of text, I hope you can clarify some of my doubts and I hope I'll see some of you in-game Thank you for your attention. 1) As Terrell has suggested, install all the free DLCs and add some people on the DAIMP sign-up sheet to your Origin friend list. Here in US there're still plenty of pugs in routine/threatening during peak hour, which is usually holidays/weekends/evenings. I assume it's similar in Europe, but it may also depend on which specific region you are in. You can bypass the region lock by joining someone on your friend list plus if you lose connection to server or crash to desktop in the middle of a game you can always rejoin the lobby to prevent exp loss. 2) Never solo when you can find other people to play with. Playing in a group provides more exp/money and generally more fun. If you have to solo when no one else is around, AW or silent sister is probably the best bet for a higher chance of winning. Legionnaire is very hard to kill and generate good exp, but soloing with him can be very slow especially when you don't have a decent 1-hander weapon. He's a great tank in a group though. Give Reaver or Katari a try if you can get your hands on some good 2-hander weapon. 3) In my personal opinion, you don't need any promotion in order to be useful in Threatening if you build your characters right and play with people who know how to teamwork. Better gears definitely help but they're not required in Threatening. As for perilous/Nightmare/Heartbreaker, you can still play without promotion but it'll be less stressful and more fun when you reach a certain level of status. Though there is no hard-lined requirement of promotion for higher difficulties. It changes with your character builds, the gears you use and the group you're in. I say you should be capable in perilous after completing about 100 threatening games, and NM after 100 wins in perilous etc. This is derived from my own experience. You can always bump up the difficulty as soon as you feel the current level is too easy... 4) Terrell has said it, do not worry about crafting now and focus on getting the reward chests by earning 1,000,000 exp for each class. Although ugly, the drakescale armor you get from the chests will be very useful in helping you survive. I remember some BSNer mentioned that the exp you earn from using silent sister counts for both warrior and rogue, but I didn't verify this myself. Save every cotton you get from salvaging. Only use them to craft heal-on-kill updates for really good weapons, which I think should be purple weapons at least level 20 or higher. If you have extra low-tier materials other than cotton, make some dragon calls and go dragon hunting in threatening/perilous(but not in routine). Once killed the dragon may drop you some decent gears. Note that the map in which you can call dragons(Ferelden Castle), also has more enemies and yields more exp, yet consequentially takes longer to finish and I don't recommend soloing on this map... 5) As far as I understand, Nightmare/Heartbreaker was introduced to cater to highly promoted players for their needs of challenge. So unfortunately, for new players it will be a time-consuming grind if the goal is to excel in Nightmare and above. But you can always have fun in playing with a good group in any difficulty you feel comfortable. And if you keep playing you'll keep getting progress, slow in the beginning, faster and faster as you reach higher status/get better gears. For me, the most fun doesn't come from grinding for promotions or gears anyway. Working as a team to conquer a difficulty level which we couldn't do by soloing, be it threatening or Heartbreaker, is my favorite moment of playing this game.

There is also an "enter proving grounds" option to test out builds with AI team mates.

I am on PC, and every so occasionally drop down to threatening. I almost ALWAYS find a threatening game. So, that may well be you best bet to not solo.
I really dislike solo-ing, and even with all my promotes, pretty much refuse to solo nightmare. Always would rather drop to perilous and play in a group, as long as I can hold back and not overrun the game and reduce the fun for others.

Always would rather drop to perilous and play in a group, as long as I can hold back and not overrun the game and reduce the fun for others. I'm always impressed when I see this. I've played with some of the heavy hitters on this board in perilous PUGS, like Gekrakel, and they always play in a complimentary way to the rest of the team (when it would be easy for them to just steamroll everything). Makes it more fun for everyone. In fact, Hunter and Terrell (and even Witty) were doing it for ME on Nightmare yesterday ;-)

Thank you all for the tips, even with the ports open I still have the connection issue but whatever, guess I'll have to live with it. I'll see you around in game or once I promote quite a bit

Yes I do, best i can guess is that it must be related to my network, I kinda live in the outskirts and the connection is not particularly great, other multiplayer games seem fine but maybe DAI doesn't like it very much.
