And no, I won't accept gameplay/lore segregation. (snip) I want to give people a credible world governed by credible rules and let them decide how they're going to get through it. Aren't those two requirements at odds? BTW, you must have found DAI incredibly frustrating ... there's not even an attempt to conform the gameplay mechanics to lore. Don't get me wrong, I wholeheartedly agree with the idea of giving players more degrees of freedom to exploit the gameplay framework -- your "credible rules". I don't feel as strongly as you do about hewing to lore ... it's hard enough getting gameplay to be fun and not have too many exploitable glitches, adding lore conformance on the top makes it near impossible. You can tell, because, the number of games that succeed at doing that can be counted on one hand, and 3 of them have "Dark Souls" in their names.

Aren't those two requirements at odds? Not at all. I suspect it would be easier, though, to design the rules and mechanics first, and then build the story around that. Much like tabletop RPGs do. All of the DA games have been bad at this, but gimmicky systems like that health model just draw attention to the disagreement. At least DAO's gameplay was fun. I wouldn't know; I don't play action games. But, again, tabletop game systems have generally done this pretty well. That is the target for which CRPGs should be aiming.
