It would be awkward that's for sure lol but I think Cole decided to make Sera his main goal the way he pursues her in the banter. Solas is pretty determined too. I relate a lot to Cole myself though so having him around would be nice actually. It does support that Sera has a lot of pain, same as Solas. He's such a sweetheart for caring so much. Having Cole as a roommate would be troubling though given the amount of food he goes through.

I loved Cole with Dorian and Bull. The latter is just so sweet with Cole, especially since Bull is afraid of demons, but he shows so much affection for Cole

To be honest I find it rather disturbing to know that any spirit can just read your thoughts whether you want them to or not. There were times when I found his revelations about companions embarrassing because it wasn't something you should just blurt out without their agreement beforehand. Yes, it gave you insights into characters that you otherwise wouldn't get but really that is the whole point. I think it was a rather odd way of allowing us to gain extra insight, when it wasn't guaranteed you would even get the conversation and the companion hadn't actually revealed these personal details about them by choice. I loved Cole as a character but there were times when his monologues made me cringe. I took that to mean that he is still growing and learning how to help. If he becomes more of a spirit, he sets off on a path where he will help using spirit powers - being unnoticed, hearing thoughts, persuasion etc. If you make him human, he says in banter with Solas that hearing people's thoughts has become harder, and the ability might disappear completely eventually. He starts trying to help by more "human" means - a lot like a therapist - by listening, by showing he cares, by saying the right things. But I think even as a spirit, he will realize eventually that people don't like their private stuff announced in the open, and if he interacts with more physical beings in the future, he'll try to keep quiet about the pain he hears. We know he can, because he kept Solas' and Blackwall's secrets for so long.

We know he can, because he kept Solas' and Blackwall's secrets for so long. OMG YOU'RE RIGHT. and in Trespasser he was so happy when he found out the truth of the Veil and finally realized he was not something wrong and when it ended, he promised to return if needed. I went for spirit Cole but it was a hard decision. Both choices sounded like forcing my own pride over the whole existence of another being. Omg I hate this ! But seing him so happy being able to hear everyone's fears, and then seing him so happy about the veil being a construct. OMG. It just convinced me that this choice was my favourite and I'm never taking it back !!! But of course I respect the other route. Well written quest is well written. I luv Cole >n<

Amburu If it helps, Cole's main desire was not to hurt people again so if it meant changing into a Spirit/Human, he'd be content with either decision.

I usually go for human!Cole, but it's more a RP thing than something I feel strongly about. I prefer to play a dwarf, and they're pretty desperate to change their nature as a thief, so Solas' rant has the opposite of his intended effect.

Sheesh I wish I could just ask him directly lol, but that would kill the whole point of the quest. So much to keep him safe from dumb kirkwall demon-expert mages !!

I do believe human Cole can sire children and that they'd be normal kids like any other. Although I really, really like Krem/Maryden together. Cole's revelation about them both is so sweet and touching!

Cole is a great character, but his combat AI is crap. I stopped putting him in the party when I know I will need the full team. He is always the first one to die.

I adore Cole! I felt so protective of him like he was a child, he had such a sweet innocence about him. I chose for him to be more spirit, he seemed so peaceful after that decision and it felt like we were accepting his true nature, accepting him for what he is. But im curious about him being more human now..

Cole is a great character, but his combat AI is crap. I stopped putting him in the party when I know I will need the full team. He is always the first one to die. I accepted this risk and give him Kitty's Collar: "Guardian Spirit: Block one melee attack every 30 Seconds On Dying: 75% chance to heal for half health Resist a lethal strike once every 60 seconds"It's more useful than a stat necklace and it means I get his DPS and usually I don't have to worry about him unless I'm in a real knockdown, dragout fight that I prolly shouldn't be in anyway. Or he's just having a very bad RNG run that day. Also, I have a preference for Human!Cole, myself. During the discussion of it in-game, Varric's philosophy is the one I agree with more, especially when we see what Solas' philosophy is leading him towards later on (ie the idea that people's original nature can't be changed, basically what is past is more important than what is, etc.). Despite that, in my first playthrough, I did go with Solas and go Spirit, at first. He was my Fade expert (and boyfriend, but I like to think that didn't influence my decision too much), so I went with his judgement; even though, philosophically, my instincts were more on Varric's side of things. Then we hit the scene where Cole makes himself "Forget." himself and he gives that podperson-esque "Cole? Yes. You can call me that, if you wish." response and I was like "NOPE." and reloaded 8 hours of gameplay. lol I should have gone with my instincts from the start, I guess. That and I've read Asunder (I'd say its my favorite of the DAI novels) and I knew that crossing the Veil and becoming a part of this world was Cole's motivation in the first place. It was to do so to "help", yes, but he didn't have to take on a body to do that. Faith worked just fine by benevolently possessing Wynne, for example. Other spirits cross the Veil and keep their forms and accomplish their goals. Yes, its said that the real Cole wanted to just be a normal kid and that's the desire Cole latched on to, but it always felt to me that there must be something in Cole himself that also wanted a body or else he'd have been unable to do it. Also, he keeps his form even after he figures out what he is at the end of Asunder. He could have gone incorporeal at that point, even crossed the Veil and disappeared from Thedas (which was what he feared was happening throughout the book, anyway, back when he didn't understand his nature). But he doesn't. He stays as he is and stays here. Making him Spirit, under the circumstances we do in the game, feels like its just giving in to his fears. At that point, he doesn't care about his own preferences or goals. He's just rife with the fear that he'll be made into a demon and he doesn't care how he's safe from that fate, as long as he is. I think him going back to being more Spirit, given both the characterization in Asunder and in DAI up to that point, is betraying himself a little. He's emotionally compromised, basically, so its up to me to try to keep his best interests in mind, and I feel those best interests are to keep following the path he'd set out for himself before. Nothing against those who chose Spirit!Cole. Its just how I see it. (And I apologize for the wall of text. I have a lot of thoughts on it. lol) The only real drawback to Human!Cole for me was the out of nowhere Maryden romance in Trespasser. But then I heard Cole gushing about the pretty stones in the Deep Roads section he saw that reminded him of Maryden's eyes, and I thawed on that front. Especially when he later made a comment (about her "soft bosom", if I recall correctly?) and, for once, he was the one who had a private thought exposed publically! XD His "No one heard that! Forget!" line was hilarious. lol

I STRUGGLE in party building because i want to pick all of them and i end up having to ditch someone (and sometimes HIM) because no warrior and i get so sad but THIS sounds like excellent way to handle it lol #foreverunbalancedteam I'll probably never ever be able to fully 100% make my mind on the cole choice. Ok great writing etc but AH IT'S SO HARD whY I hope i'll manage to understand how to write Cole lines. I love his way of saying things it's so interesting. In the meantime I manage to learn how his face is built so it's alright. Cole gif, and amazing drawing ref !

He did die a lot as a dual-daggers user, which is why I switched him to being a bow fighter. He was much better in combat and rarely died. I can't leave Skyrim hold without my little brother.

I went into my first PT knowing exactly who was romance able. (Oops, was Dorian being gay really meant to be a secret?) So, Cole was just whoever. The longer I played with him, though, the more he was my kid. So, I'm the same as you on that front. I've tried both routes. And prefer him as human.

I just posted this on another thread that was totally not Cole related. So, I thought I'd paste it here as well, since it IS related.
So, Cole.
My initial reaction was to make him more human. Then I re thought it for my third play through-- and regretted it.
See, Solas argued that he's a spirit of compassion that, confused, formed a semi corporeal body to try to interact more directly this side of the veil. This is a truth, as we now know with the book and Cole's story. To encourage him to return to his spirit form is to reverse a MISTAKE. A thing that should not have happened. A bastardization of what Cole was meant to be. And really keying in on this, and thinking on it, I realized that my initial reaction to making Cole human hadn't had a lot of thought to it. I realized the decision had been made out of the point of view of someone who found spirits confusing- making Cole more human made him more like me, more understandable, and the human mind likes simplicity. (HA! Hello, Solas quote.) This is all a very strong argument to relent to Solas' well worded plea.
But this absolutely hinges on Cole being a confused spirit that can't make his own choices. Well, I mean, he IS a confused spirit creature when he meets the Quiz, but was he REALLY that when he made the choice to become more corporeal? The choice was made in a very emotional moment for the Compassion spirit but does that make his choice wrong to anyone who isn't rather attached to spirits being spirits? I mean, Solas really romantacizes the notion of spiritual purity that these Spirits of Wisdom and Compassion and Justice etc espouse. Possibly having been a spirit himself previously, he could be remembering fondly to the "good ol' days:" when things had more clear distinction, and spirits didn't become corporeal unless they wanted to, with nothing more emotional than the urge for exploration to guide them. Alternatively, Solas feels alone in the "world of the Tranquil" and relates more strongly to spirits being "his people" than the people around him. So, he's emotionally inclined to keep spirits being spirits. So, as well worded as his plea may be, as logical as he wants to imply he is, saying Cole should be more spirit is also tied a selfish preference within him as well. He's not a neutral party in this decision. There is very much a way Solas wants the world to be.
So, in the end, although I initially made him more human because I value humanity, then reversed course because I found that idea to devalue spirits.... I now will make him more human to respect his initial choice; a choice made when he was most himself. It's a bit tied into a "fate" idea for me as well. I will not reverse his fate and negate his will. He is what he is now, all I can do now is support his transition towards the path he set out on.
I also think that that scene where he erases his own memories to be equivalent to suicide, but I really tried to ignore that feeling while I put more thought into it. So, it's just happy coincidence that my logical thoughts on the matter matched up with my emotional thoughts on the matter.

Cole is a font of lore. You are literally missing some of the lore if you have not taken Cole 24/7 with you in a playthrough. I recommend everyone to do it. Make Cole a permanent party member in your group and only switch the other two. His comments on events and interaction with other companions is just great.

I didn't like Cole the first time I played but he really grew on me in later saves. He's currently in my main lineup, he pretty much goes everywhere. I conscripted the templars this time so I could get Cole sooner in the game. I enjoy hearing the conversations he has with other party members and listening to his insight. He makes me laugh as well, I can't help but like him. I've chosen both spirit and human for him in various playthroughs. I suppose it depends on who/what I'm playing. For instance (in my mind) a mage has a better understanding of spirits than somebody without magic, so it makes sense in my mage playthroughs to choose spirit for him and human for my others. I think of a non-mage person seeing it from Varric's perspective as in Cole looking and acting more like a human than a spirit.

I didn't felt at the beginning that I would fall for Cole, but... ...imma gonna leave it here so yeah, i really like Cole think the banter between him and companions i liked the most was with Dorian and Cassandra i think. Solas, because of the reasons... but i never took him with Sera. Gotta try them both next time!

Cole's "first pun" cracked me up.
So, first time I've had Cole and Cass in a party together, and it just seems they're just summarizing major scenes from Asunder.

I have no idea what happened there, but the time I heard Cole talking about Seekers with Cassandra I stopped walking and listened to them. And then Cole actually stayed... if they spend some more time you can even notice that they relation is changing. Which I loved. But I heard Cole can get a cat from Varric? Someone said sth like that.
