This Thread is Renewed on Page 36. pages 1-35 is my intiail Play through of the game with NO DLC and skipping a lot of side content. I've now played TW2 and am playing TW3 for the 2nd time, doing all side content and having bought the DLC. Don't spoil the DLCs please. Below was my original OP. Please no spoilers FOR ME. But I'll be sharing my thoughts so spoilers for anyone else who hasn't played. Heard good things, but have been turned off by male protagonist collecting sex cards and complicated craft system. Been reading the Witcher 3 vs Dragon Age thread. I dunno. I guess I feel like I can't debate the greatness of Dragon Age with little to compare the game to. I've play each game of Dragon Age 3x and have 12 more planned PTs. It always seems like the Witcher is the most often game chosen to compare Dragon Age to. My roommate has a copy and a PS4 he's not using. So, money can't be an excuse. So, going to put my thoughts, pretty unedited, in this thread as I go. I like it when people new to Dragon Age do that. Edit add: 1. definitely playing on the PS4, not PC. 2. I watched the scenes of The Witcher 1 on YouTube 7 months back, so not totally having zero clue. Just very little clue. 3. Try not to spoil the story of this game, cuz it is my first play, but if It's Witcher 1 and 2 story I should technically know as Geralt in game 3, have at it.

Introduction with the voice over: Interesting. Reminded me of Origins.
Introduction where Geralt is tracking someone: cool.
Then it asked me if I wanted to simulate a Witcher 2 save but gave me no context. Dragon Age explains the three possible world states you can import so the lack of explaination hurts. Uh, sure? So long as I'm not in a relationship with Triss? (I watched all the scenes of The Witcher 1 and thought she was shady.)
Onwards.

Lobster in my bath is weird...
Ooo. I can light a candle. With magic snapping fingers, but still.
Also, this balcony view may have DAI beat. There is wind and clouds and movement.
My interaction with Yennifer was nice and made me laugh. "Who cares how many women I slept with? I always thought of you." That's awful and sweet at the same time. : P
LMAO wanted to see if I could stand on the balcony railing. I jumped too far and died. What? No Skyhold feats of godhood?!
I like the Witcher Senses zoom and highlight better than the golden ring of Hot Cold game that is finding things in Inquisition. Makes me feel like a person is looking instead of... Weird game mechanic.

First on the order of business: Forget what you've been told. While Witcher 3 is a great RPG in it's own right, it's not the holy grail many make it out to be. It has it's flaws.
As someone who played all three, I can fully suggest the Witcher 2 Save Game simulator. If you haven't played the previous games or read the books, you might not know a lot. Don't worry, Geralt is technically in a relationship with Triss, but you can break that off and go for Yennefer instead. It's a W2 railroad that lead to the Triss relationship.
Also, since the second Witcher, you no longer collect, errr... romance cards. There are now potentially awkward, fully animated scenes. Nothing full-frontal, but I hope you like beeeeeeewbz (read that in Honest Trailer voice... please...). The crafting system is more along the lines of "craft once" unlike Inquisitions - only alcohol is actually spent far as I understand (that's Alcohest, most of the time).
It is also my understanding that based on the books, Triss is supposed to be one shady AF individual, but I haven't read them myself.
Good luck, and remember: Two swords. One silver... and the other is also for monsters.

More like your adoptive daughter.
Witchers are sterile due to the mutations they've undergone - You'll learn the details of those eventually. So are sorceresses (Yen and Triss) but I have no idea why they're in that predicament.
Just saying, if you're in Vizima already, you'll meet this important guy and find out how it really is with Ciri and parenthood.

Okay. I sucked at the tutorial. I did go longer with it trying to get the hang of combat, but I already forget how to dodge roll. I've never played warrior in DA even, except the occasional last man standing tank moment. There is Sign/Quen magic thing, and I'm going to default to a thing that seems to be the equivalent to Mind Blast. Considering how fast pace the fighting is, with things to do other than just be whacked, I may eventually use that Slow Glyph spell. But for right now, I can only handle the new responsibilities of block, two kinds of whacking, and dodge roll Ciri running off got me worried in a Lee/Clementine way and then I got grimly reminded I was in a dream sequence. And haha I'm making Geralt sensitive fluffy and open to talking. How did they use a unicorn in bed? Not sure I wanna know.

"thought you were going to read it, not sniff it." LOL
Then using the first battle (where I of course died) I noticed how the sun rays were shining on me and the monsters. I've seen sun rays in Inquisition but I dunno if they were a mechanic I ever saw during battle. Maybe cuz the sun was always straight overhead, or it's night, except at the place where we kill the Head Seeker for Cass?

I've seen sun rays in Inquisition but I dunno if they were a mechanic I ever saw during battle. Maybe cuz the sun was always straight overhead, or it's night, except at the place where we kill the Head Seeker for Cass? I died there for the first time too, and I play warriors regularly. You're right, Inquisition has fixed day and night times per zone, and except for Cass's seeker quest, none of these presets were sunrise or sunset. In this case, the time of day is also fixed (because it needs to be early morning so it makes sense that Geralt wakes from his dream), but from now on, there will be day and night cycles. You can advance them to a time of your choosing by meditation, so if you don't feel like poking around at night and don't feel good about the howling coming from the nearby woods, find a quiet spot and meditate till morning. This will also consume one dose of alcohol, if you have any, and refill all things alchemical.

Okay okay... Didn't die that time. Dodge is very necessary skill.
So there is the witcher sense that highlights things but also loot from enemies and herbs nearby are on your mini map. Helpful! Because Witcher sensing 100 yards of land is time consuming.
Having no idea what's important, I spend five minutes picking flowers. Enough of that! To the horse.
Why is my horse named Roach? @_o

I remember there was a way to sheath my sword, but I've pushed all the buttons and no go. I feel awkward riding a horse with my sword out. Does that mean there is horse battle though? Roach didn't like mind blast and ran away haha but it didn't look like it hurt him.
I thought the name roach was like "everyone will hate the name no matter what we pick so let's just pick something equally hateable by all."
I think having my sword out scared the peasants. There was gasping. I thought the lady crying meant I'd get a mission if I talked to them but apparently not.

The general context from The Witcher 2 that will help you better understand some points in TW3:
> Geralt had amnesia and Triss exploited this to get with him(yes, she is shady AF =P). He also has a thing for Yennefer, and by TW3 his memory is back so the Triss romance is optional.
> The Witcher 2 saw a number of the kings in the northern lands assassinated by a Witcher that Geralt hunted down in part to clear his own name. The Witcher 3 also takes place in the north, but by this game Nilfgaard has invaded due to its weakened state.
> The game does a poor job of noting it, but if you do simulate a Witcher 2 save then at some point a NPC will ask you some questions about your past that determines the main import save points. If you've been to Vizima, this has already happened.
As far as combat goes you've got three main styles: Swordmastery, Magic, and Alchemy.
The unfortunate reality, which in my opinion is the game's biggest weakness compared to Dragon Age, is that no matter which one you pick you're pretty much going to want to use all 3 in combat anyway. You'll want to slash at the enemies a few times in between magic uses, and while you're inexperienced with combat Quen is going to be your best friend since it absorbs damage taken.
Geralt is really not very durable compared to characters from Dragon Age and can't take many hits, so avoiding taking damage entirely is a big deal unless you want to stock up on insane amounts of health restoring food.
With alchemy you only have to craft a potion once and then your stock is replenished by standard alcohol whenever you meditate for at least 1 hour.
You can battle on your horse but it's pretty clunky imo, so I tend to avoid it when possible.

Yes, having your sword out will scare the general populace. Guards may like it even less. People don't like you for being a mutant. And some of them need you and sometimes like you even less for it. Actual knife ears are similarly unpopular, and the feeling is often mutual. I don't know if the continent has a name, I only remember that it was called The Northern Kingdoms. You won't need much health restoring food unless you play on the higher two difficulties - on the lower two, you can regenerate health easily through meditation.

And haha I'm making Geralt sensitive fluffy and open to talking. How did they use a unicorn in bed? Not sure I wanna know. If you're on keyboard default (which you're not, right...) then ALT is dodge, SPACE is roll. Rolling covers more ground, can more easily flank enemies with the proper use of it, but regular dodge should be your mainstay. Also, try to cover out humanoid attacks, againist monsters just dodge. If you have reflex issues, there's a skill that, if you have non-zero Toxicity, slows time when an attack is about to hit you. And Dodge is the magic win button when it comes to not being hit. As for guard and repelling attacks, you actually need to press the block button when the attack is about to connect. Holding it down for an extended period of time will just turn the enemy blade away. Also, every successful block takes away a part of your Focus (recharges over time, used to cast signs and sprint/jump) There isn't something exactly as mind blast, but the signs do this: Aard - a telecinetic blast that knocks back enemies. Can knock them off their feet or break a shield defense, too. Axii - will momentarily stun or bewilder an enemy. It can also calm your horse or other creatures when they are afraid or panicking. Igni - a blast of fire. Quen - a magic shield that absorbs damage. Yrden - a glyph that slows enemies that walk into it. All of them can be upgraded to do additional funny stuff. Don't worry about the unicorn yet. You'll find out... Serza's 101 Sign crashcourse: Aard: Basically force push/biotic throw if you ever watched Star Wars or played Mass Effect. Can knock enemies down with luck, which equals instakill finisher with sword. Axii: Mostly useless in a fight, IMHO, but can stun an enemy or even turn them againist their former buddies with upgrades. I usually take a hit casting it, though. Mostly used in cutscenes - it's pretty much Force Persuade from Star Wars. Even the lore way it works is relatively similar. Igni: Mainstay combat sign. Can set candles/fireplaces on fire in regular gameplay (Aard extinguishes) and do the same to enemies in combat. Quen: I suggest you always cast this when entering a fight. It can withstand a few hits in some cases (Nekkers and such, AFAIK) but will protect you from damage. It also wears off over time. Yrden: A trap. Slows down enemies that enter glyph area. Required to fight certain wraiths (noonwraiths and nightwraiths, for example) as it forces them to take on a physical form, vulnerable to blows with your Silver. Wraiths (and only some kinds) are the only types of enemy immune to sword blows without meeting an Yrden prerequisite. A good Wiedźmin will vary his signs. Igni for damage. Quen for protection. Yrden for slowing. Aard for pushing. The ideal situation is to use a combination of sword blows and signs to defeat an opponent, with bonus points for proper bomb, oil and potion use. For example: Black Blood potion is handy when fighting any of the vampiries, like Bruxae. Golden Oriole, if I remember correctly, neutralizes poisons, making it useful againist Scolopendromorphs in the Blood and Wine expansion, as well as few other enemies. Swallow heals, same as White Raffard's Deconction (Swallow is a heal over time, WRD is an insta-heal for loads more toxicity). Similarly, oils will improve damage dealt with sword blows, and last but not least, bombs can damage and have special effects - once more with Bruxae, who can go invisible, but their ability can be negated with the right bomb. Remember your training, and good luck, Master Witcher! *gasp* they called me a freak! I'm the elf in the world of... Wait, what's this world called? Wonder if there is a codex... Ah, that's how you roll... oh, that's how Geralt lost his memories... Ah. The World Map says the Country of Vizima. But what's the name of the continent? Anyway. I'm the dirty Knife Ear of Vizima. Ah, yes... Welcome. You are not human due to mutations, and most will treat you that way, going as far as trying to cheat you out of your fair day's pay. And I am glad you have seen Wizima, the capital of Temeria, land of Vernon Roche.

*gasp* I can swim!
And there are kids all round. And animals! Although I can't sword kill a hare? And adults are gossiping and looking like they're working on daily tasks and not just standing there. Although, we did see soldiers practicing in Haven or at Skyhold with the Soldiers Ring upgrade.
I saved before I looted a box. No one arrested me, so I guess I'd have to actually go in their house before it counts as stealing.
By the way, I'm no where near being in a city. This is my first village.
I like that they put the suggested path dots on the mini map.

You should be able to sword kill anything. Suggest Steel for hares. You probably have a crossbow by now, if you hold down the fire button, you will enter manual aim. At least on PC, presumably on consoles as well.

The crossbow is mainly used for two things: to help flying creatures to a nice crash landing, and to harpoon cheeky drowners that come after you under water. It's oddly less effective against enemies walking on solid ground. Holding the button will let you aim manually, tapping it will snap an auto aimed shot at the nearest enemy.
