Just finished a new playthrough, and I was reminded of how much I love the subtext of Trevelyan dancing with Bull at the Winter Palace. First, when you compare Trevelyan's relationship with Bull to Celene's relationship with Briala, dancing together is Trevelyan telling Bull, through actions rather than words, that he'll never treat Bull the same way Celene treated Briala. This is present to a lesser extent with the other three possible Inquisitors, but considering Thedosian racial politics the impact isn't as strong as with a human Inquisitor. Second, Trevelyan dancing with his own non-human lover is essentially flipping Celene off in a way that only Celene, Briala, and the Inquisition will notice. I know this is hella old but I only just now saw it. Just wanted to say, I think about that a lot when it comes to any interracial relationship in Thedas but especially humans with elves/qunari, since that's where probably the largest power deferentials come into play. It's also present in some intercultural same-race pairings (Fereldan noble dancing with an Orlesian bard, Free Marcher openly smooching a 'Vint, literally any noble(wo)man consorting with a known pirate) but the dynamic is different. Openly dancing with Bull at Halamshiral, Pope Leliana flaunting her relationship and opening the Chantry to non-humans, Hawke being proud to have Fenris/Merrill on their arm, accepting Zevran or Sera's marriage proposals, etc. This is one of the things I appreciate about Sera's romance - the greatest gift you can give her is to be proud and open about being with her. And that's present in Bull's romance too, when everybody busts in on you and you have the opportunity to come clean or downplay your relationship..... Bull's not wanting to be anyone's dirty little secret and NOPES out if you seem like you're ashamed of being with him. Anyway, Bull is love, Bull is life, here's some fanart.

Considering Bull's broad sexuality, I can't decide if that "Hey Cullen, how's it going?" (when Bull and Inquisitor get caught) meant "Sup bro" or "Wanna join in? "

I doubt Bull would invite a third person without making sure the Inquisitor is okay with it first.

There is one thing I don't understand about Bull's betrayal. He kept talking about how there is no way the Viddasala's actions were authorized by the Triumvirate, so why the hell did he obey her in the end?

Qun-loyal Bull's just running on plausible deniability, just like how Par Vollen publically denounces the Viddasala's actions but was 100% backing her bullshit. That's what they do.

Iβm curious to see how much they supported her. Was it the whole time, or until she went this new route and they decided the alliance was more valuable than her unit. After all the note with them denying it isnβt delivered but instead crumpled up and tossed aside in her base, so clearly she wasnβt happy with it which seems strange if that was just part of the plan.

Why would you take any of his claims at face value in that scenario?

I haven't seen it anywhere on this thread, so I thought I'd give a big shoutout to quartermaster Ser Eustace Morris. I was going over my savefiles and one of them was at the point where Inky crafts the necklace of kadan to give to Iron Bull. I remembered it being one my favorite scenes in the game, as after I closed the crafting window I heard Morris pipe up: "I hope it helps." Apparently it's one of his randomly selected stock phrases along with "Consider it done" and "We are honored to serve" but used right at that moment it made me feel Morris was wishing Inky luck with his endeavour. Even without that scene Morris was one of my favourite NPCs (I remember having been neutral towards Threnn; I totally missed the bit about her and Loghain), and cheering him on silently every time I interacted with him, so I was a bit taken back when I first saw his old DA wikia entry which described him as weaselly. Ser Morris was voiced by Gethin Anthony (Gil Brodie in MEA), a detail I also failed to pick up despite having watched the early seasons of Game of Thrones.

My first playthrough (just recently completed), Jethro, becomes the Kadan of Iron Bull. Iron Bull romance does have a lot of funny moments and conversation, e.g. the one that the advisers and find out Iron Bull is sleeping with him (sadly, I am not fast enough to capture the screenshot). In Trepasser, they even discuss about sex toy and one of the bondage play when Jethro try to propose to him! That's give out a lot of color to Iron Bull's character and I really love him.

So... how is it that Vivienne makes Bull all subby because she is a powerful woman and that reminds him of Tamassrans, but the (F) Inquisitor has no such effect on him?

So... Iron Bull will be the last romance I commit to. I romanced multiple times Sera and Dorian (and I will romance again Cullen), but I have troubles to think about a suitable race/gender to romance IB. Any suggestions? If so, why do you think that combination is ok?

I romanced multiple times Sera and Dorian (and I will romance again Cullen), but I have troubles to think about a suitable race/gender to romance IB. Any suggestions? If so, why do you think that combination is ok? I romanced Bull with a male mage Trevelyan and very much enjoyed this combination. That said, I think one of Bull romance's good points is that he can work with any of the races and genders. When deciding what sort of an Inky you want to pair Bull up with, it's perhaps better to start with which traits are more and which less ideal in an Inky who intends to romance Bull and choose your Inky's attributes based on that. My starting questing would be asking what sort of Inky is both stupid enough and trusting enough to start something with a known spy from an antagonistic nation: Despite sharing a common merc background and finally meeting someone taller than him my Adaar would fear Qun too much to risk mixing intimately with its member. A Carta past left my Cadash suspicious: he would expect a knife in the back and refuse to be weaponless and naked in Bull's presense, let alone get involved with someone who prefers the life of a mercenary without luxuries. Then there's Lavellan who doesn't have a submissive bone in his body, so no go. Enter a Trevelyan who has grown used to obeying someone else's rules in a Circle and has enough magic to fry any non-templar trying to harm him: he is both able to bend when needed and feels certain he can kill Bull if he were a danger to his safety. A life in a Circle has also left him nonjudgmental of restrictions Qun places on people's sex lifes. Less flatteringly this Trevelyan is also less able spot the subtle moves Bull uses to have their relationship develop in directions he perceives favorable to himself. (My Lavellan and Cadash would not be fooled.) OVERALL TIPS: - If you don't want to skip over any of romance dialogue, this is probably not the playthrough to have yourself a non-drinking Inquisitor. - I also wouldn't recommend creating an Inky who prefers topping in bed and then have them romance Bull, those who have tried to do so seem to have come out either unhappy or they have needed to do some headcanoning and disregard some dialogue to make it work. Bull's read on Inquisitor has also caused contention when the player has conceived their Inky's nature differently. I think the romance works best when you roleplay that Bull's take is correct. - Even inexperienced Inquisitors are workable with Bull, provided the player doesn't roleplay a passive character that expects to be pursued. - Given Bull's love for redheads, many players - myself included - have chosen to create a redhead for him. - Bull's communal and nurturing nature can be roleplayed as being especially attractive to an Inquisitor with a communal background or a wish to be part one. Lost loved ones could also be something to use as a basis. - Bull has good things to say about the way Inky smells after becoming a Reaver (which goes well together with the romance) if one is undecided what class to pick and wants to maximize Bull dialogue. - Cole with Solas and Cole with Blackwall has partybanter concerning the romance. - I personally liked how Inky and Bull's romance concluded, but it has also been criticised for not being very romantic. - If you're not afraid of massive spoilers, I'd recommed this take on the romance.

Thank you very much for the great overview. I've played DA:I 8 times with full playthroughs, but IB romance does not feel my cup of tea. I fell in love with characters like Sera and Dorian even if I was quite skeptic about them at the very beginning when the possible romances were announced.
I've romanced all characters except for Bull, because I honestly don't really like the character. I keep him around because of the Chargers and if it were for me, I would gladly loose him to keep Krem and the company (it can be done however by non doing "Demands of the Qun". I'll think about what you said. Maybe to romance him I have to think about a different kind of Inquisitor and in the meanwhile, I have other PTs to complete (Mass Effect included).

The Iron Bull is my favorite romantic partner for Inquisition, and my favorite combinations to pair him with are either a female dwarf or female elf. This is just personal preference, though.
To add to what sandwichtern already said: -Bull has a detailed, additional talk that is only available to Tempest Inquisitors -IF you like to roleplay as a faithful Inquisitor, Bull is a little less appealing. Bull is definitely a very open, non-judgmental, and accepting partner. However, there are absolutely zero conversations with him that touch on the potentially important topic of the Inquisitor's faith, while nearly every other potential love interest touches on the subject. If you think your Inquisitor's lover should address your character's possible divinity or chosen fate, then Bull may not be for you. -I gravitate towards female Inquisitors for Bull simply because he only ever mentions partnering with other women in his various comments and dialogue. For me personally, I could only make a male Inquisitor work if he were bisexual. Say, starting with Josephine, and breaking up during the duel, before finding his true soul mate in The Iron Bull. In my eyes, this mirrors Bull's own journey, in that, both characters experiment more within the confines of heteronormativity in the start, but find true love with eachother in the end.

I've determined that THIS is the year I'll commit to playing all those playthroughs of DAI that I've been intending to do, but never quite got around to. Currently romancing Dorian as my slightly grumpy, slightly Cloudcuckoolander dwarven assassin, but BULL. YOU'RE NEXT. He's one of my favorite DA characters of all time, but because he's soooo (deliberately) easygoing and doesn't have a ton of race-specific dialogue, I don't have an immediate "YES THAT" like I do with other characters and ships. So I feel the pain of other posters in this thread.
Someday, Bull. SOMEDAY.

Regardless, that'll give you the most extra content if I remember correctly.

I think even a Reaver Qunquisitor/Bull relationship still works as an opposites attract kind of thing, since you're culturally so different and Bull has so much Tal-Vashoth baggage. You basically get to bond over looking like dragons and having boners for dragons which, honestly.... goals ππΌ

Champion or Reaver, I'm not sure about Templar and how Bull reacts to that. But in general warrior gives you one extra dialogue option in Trespasser with Bull, s'all. Right, there's definitely the whole Qun thing, but in terms of aesthetic, it probably doesn't work for all or they are more interested in the size difference between, well, any race except qunari and Bull. I generally like making an elf with Bull, but like a strong, manly elven brute dude warrior who doesn't subject himself to Bull's dom kink just like that and puts up a good fight in their battle for dominance in the bedroom and otherwise! I feel like Bull needs a challenge, and regardless of what race I pick, I always play a character who likes to '' one up '' Bull and generally be competitive with him.

Funnily enough, Lavellan's my other favorite choice. (Probably because Sera/Adaar has me weak for elf/qunari ships. If we get to sweep that qunari lady off her feet in DA4, I might just roll an elf for her too. And I think, in another life, Bull and Fenris would find they have a lot in common I ship it). I was gonna use the American voice (I've heard people say it doesn't "fit" elves but Fenris has a deep voice, and the British one is a little too posh for me?? So ye), make him a practical hunter type who chooses a lot of direct and a fair amount of snarky responses. I feel like they'd vibe, just wouldn't get the same friction as some other combinations. Which can be a good or bad thing depending on how you like your romances.

Oh Champion would work as well. I gotcha. I always, always pick the American voice these days, even when I make a really pretty, slightly androgynous male character, there's no doubt about it, I pick the American voice. It just resonates with me better, it's a bit more subtle and a whole lot more effective. I often play elves for the sole reason of subverting expectations of what people expect out of elven characters. Plus I don't really like how thick and buff the men of the rest of the races are. Elves are closer to what I personally prefer to play as, though elves are too skinny as well, but that's nothing a good big armor doesn't fix, for most of the game anyway. In general though I like interracial relationships the most in fantasy games. I'm not sure what it is, maybe it's just that there's a lot of conflict in western RPGs between races, so it adds some tension into an interracial romance. Although I rarely roleplay any romances where two characters have a big rift in their ideals. Sounds like a magnificent setup, and I think it'll work perfectly with Bull! One little hint, during the last bedroom scene with Bull, the last dialogue choice, go for the '' 1. We're together to the end '' option if you can. That option is so crucial for the romance imo, because it's one of the only times Bull really shows off his sensitive side that aches for the Inquisitor. Unless of course the other options seem more fitting for the character you roleplay. Bull's romance, while fun, can be a bit devoid of the romantic aspects, so if you are wanting a bit more from Bull, that is definitely a necessary option to pick to really see how much Bull cares for you! Anyway, here's my current canon Inquisitor and his man!

Anyway, here's my current canon Inquisitor and his man! They look great together! I love your Lavellan's rugged good looks; I can almost hear Jon Curry's voice. And I'm with you on interracial relationships. So far, Isabela/fHawke in my second world state is my only same-race ship in DA (and maaaaaybe Josie x fTrevelyan if I don't change my mind). I'm just really fascinated by race dynamics in Dragon Age?? So interesting. And then piling class issues (in both the sociopolitical and magic/melee sense....), culture clash, etc. There are just so many potential stories to tell. And I like to challenge my characters and their love interests and push them out of their comfort zone a little while also having a lot in common, and I find that pairing them with someone they never thought they'd end up with but who shares similar values is ππΌππΌ MY JAM And thank you for the tip re: his dialogue. Those little bits make all the difference, tbh. I felt so much more invested in my romance with Leliana when I tried to dump her out of nowhere before the final battle - as an in-character thing, like my Warden was pushing Leli away in that moment to protect her heart, but Leliana's response is so perfect - "exCUSE me, we're not throwing away our LoVE because of fEAR" - or choosing the exact specific lines to get Zevran to confess how much his Warden means to him and propose. Or how you can bring up getting married to Sera in the base game, she'll call you a looney with a fond smile and then turn around and propose in Trespasser.... and you can call her a looney back (affectionately. Lol, it's a YES answer). Suffice to say..... I'm trash for all those little things that make a love story more complete and satisfying.
