Sadly, looks like they came up about $45,000 short on the last stretch goal.
Game is now content-locked. No sea monsters.

Okay, I'm being melodramatic. This is more of a thread CPR. But I always wanted to use that! My question. I tried playing the first game and clocked about five hours in it before giving up. Thing is, it wouldn't be the first time that a game has a crappy beginning but ends up being awesome after a while. But powering through the game so far is proving... difficult. Does it get better? How? And how long would I have to wait before it does? What does the rest of the game have to recommend it e.g. what do I have to look forward to? Any chance Deadfire will be better and I should just forget about getting into the first one?

I think it depends on what you mean by "better" I mean, gameplay wise, you get more/stronger abilities, gear, etc. But the general gameplay doesn't change. Well, you get your own keep to rebuild and maintain, but that's it. The story, though, is an unfolding mystery, as you investigate what happened to you in those ruins, the history of the Dyrwood, Waidwen's Legacy, and so on. So if the story is a slow start for you, then yes it gets better.

POE started slow for me as well. I gave up on it after 8 or so hours. Some weeks later I went back in it and tried to liven it up with more roleplaying on my part. That worked because the game does give you quite a few ways to set your personal mark in the world.
However after having fun for about 15 more hours, things slowed down again for me. The combat just wasn't fun even though there are lots of abilities to use. Or maybe the loads of abilities were the problem. And the loading screens got too annoyingly long with no reason and no way to fix. Why does this game needs the same time to load a tiny room and a large map? I mean I know why, but still...why?
At a certain point I dropped the game again and haven't played it for months. I picked tasks from half a dozen gods and didn't even start them. There must be some real pissed deities waiting for me.
It is a really long game with many RP possibilities, but it can get dull.
On the other hand I thoroughly enjoyed Tyranny. It was shorter, compact and with a lot of replay value because of that. But at the end it felt too short of a game, ending just when things got interesting. Guess I am not easy to please.

Iakus @tzeenchianapostrophe Okay, I decided to give it another try. I reloaded my old save and continued where I was e.g. Gilded Vale, shortly after recruiting Aloth and Eder. I went over all the menus to get reacquainted with the mechanics and, lo and behold, there are AI companion tactics now! I'm pretty sure that wasn't there before; I believe they were added with a patch. That alone made the combat a lot more enjoyable, since I no longer have to deal with companions standing around like morons, not even bothering to perform basic attacks on their own. I cleared most sidequests in the general area before moving on with the main plot. I got the stronghold, recruited three more companions, and arrived at Defiance Bay. I also did a few levels of the Endless Paths, but I prefer my dungeon crawling in small doses. That's as far as I've gotten so far. I am enjoying the game much more now than last time I tried it, but I'm still lukewarm about it. Every plus seems to come with a con: -The environments are gorgeous, but those loading times are irritating. -The companions are great, but they barely say or do anything. -The combat is fun, but there is a little too much of it. Boss fights are intense, but fighting the 235th trash mob? Not so much. -I've finished Act 1 and while I'm sensing something big is about to happen, the main plot hasn't really picked up yet. -There are tons of choices, many of them at character creation. But they don't seem to impact much of anything. -The setting is interesting, but there is way too much exposition. -That prologue is still terrible. Like I said, I'm having fun so far, but I'm waiting until I finish it before I make up my mind. At least now I don't feel like I wasted the admission price. That said, through sheer ignorance of the system, I specced and leveled up my character horribly and now can't undo it, so I've been thinking of starting an alternative playthrough with a different class and better planning. Might be more enjoyable that way. Any recommendations? So far, Barbarian or Paladin are looking fun.

Might be more enjoyable that way. Any recommendations? So far, Barbarian or Paladin are looking fun. You definitely want to take the Endless Paths a bit at a time. It's 15 levels deep and the difficulty ramps up quite a bit. The end boss is one of the hardest fights in the game, even with a max level party. There isn't as much banter in PoE as in Bioware games this is true. Fortunately Deadfire hit the stretch goal to double the budget for that stuff. Too much combat was a complaint for the game. I believe there was a patch that lowered the number of late-game enemies to fight. Act 2 takes place in and around Defiance Bay, mostly. Your investigations will start to reveal what's happening to you and how it fits into the "big picture". Many options require a particular skill rank or stat to be able to take. Do you have that visible in your settings? Also, at the end of a game, there is a text epilogue that will tell you how your choices affect the Dyrwood long-term. Some of them can be quite major. I do hope Deadfire uses Tyranny's method of bringing you up to speed on things, with the in-game link to various terms and definitions rather than exposition dumps.

You can spec it in different ways depending on how you want to play it.
Playing a battlemage is also a lot of fun. (if you hate micro-managing Aloth, you can set his tactics accordingly and give him battlemage spells, he tends to be very effective, only downside is that this build is rest intensive as he will use a lot of buff spells every fight, and so will you if you play something similar)
Barbarian will give you melee AoE, but I don't have much experience with it. Paladin you can build in different ways, all of them useful.
As for the game itself, again, it's certainly a slow game, but it has it's charm as well I think. Deadfire I think will be better in many aspects, I suspect that it might go easier on the sheer number of encounters. The new bonus dungeon seems shorter than the endless paths.
I have not played a cypher yet, that's for my next run. Paladin can be fun. And there's actually five different orders of paladin you can be. Each with its own particular code of conduct which will make you stronger for following. You provide buffs to your party just by being there, and with a good weapon, can deal out respectable damage. Also, paladins and cyphers definitely have class-specific dialogue options in the game.

I like them mainly because they are a caster class without the annoying restriction of spells per-day, something which I always hated about the DnD system. I also don't like how you have to center your powers on your enemies or yourself, it's rather annoying at times that you can't target the ground.
I'd much rather see them play like a Warlock honestly. Still, mind-control is fun, and some of their abilities allow them to become fairly sturdy and hard-hitting close combat specialists. Last one I played with a pistol and a two handed weapon. I'd start the fight by shooting the pistol once and getting some extra focus and an opening shot of psykery, and then charge in with a greatsword.
For race I'd usually take Moon / Fire godlike, moon because of the racial trait, and fire because of the looks...
My last character was a hearth orlan. Interesting to see how NPCs react to orlans (YOU HUMANS ARE ALL RACIST! ) plus the crit bonus when attacking an enemy one of your companions has targetted. Edit: and cyphers having to target an enemy or ally makes sense. They are the masters of "mind magic" So you need a mind, rather than empty space, to target.

I assume we just use this for Pillars of Eternity discussions now? Can't find another thread.
Well i haven't played PoE since it came out, and i want to get back into it. Go through it again and play the expansion aswell. Been on a roll lately with Baldurs Gate, Shadowrun, Wasteland and so on. Problem is i don't know what to play! I've ran out of ideas of characters after all these games, any suggestions?
I am not a huge fan of casters usually, which makes me think i should play one just to knock down that barrier. How is druid? Can they be spellcasters? Other than that its Cipher and Wizard? Oh and a question about the expansion - Do you get to keep your old companions, or do you get new ones?

You get to keep old companions, and there are a few new ones to find. You can get a decent melee build with a cipher if that appeals. They build energy needed to cast by attacking, though they also can do this with ranged weapons.

Druids are good casters, they can do a little bit of everything. And can melee a bit as well, depending on your build. Priests can also cast, though their specialty is buffing and healing. They can do all right as ranged characters too. Durance can fire a mean musket. You keep your old companions and can get two more in the expansion. I should caution you that it's best not to start the expansion as soon as it's available, but to wait until level 8 or so. Otherwise you may be in for some tough fights to start with.

So the expansion takes place before the end of the main story? I'll take a look at some builds, but i want to go in as blind as possible. Have you played the game on Path of the damned? Is it hard? I want to go for it, but i am not sure if its hard or tedious.

So the expansion takes place before the end of the main story? I'll take a look at some builds, but i want to go in as blind as possible. Have you played the game on Path of the damned? Is it hard? I want to go for it, but i am not sure if its hard or tedious. The general consensus among a lot of fans seems to be that anything BUT Path of the Damned is too easy. But then, that may just be grognards bragging In all seriousness, I've played a good chunk of the game on Normal and a bit on Hard, and it's not all that difficult. It's also one of those games that gets increasingly easier as you progress, since you get more companions, better gear, and level up. Therefore, the grognards are probably right in this instance. The biggest possible downside to going for the highest difficulty, perhaps, is that the story companions do not have optimized stats. So, unless you want to gimp yourself even further, you might be forced to hire some mercenaries and min/max them to perfection.

In fact, it adds some slides to the ending. It also increases the level cap, and once you finish the expansion, you have the option to have the main game scale up to your level.
