Yeah the cigar thing was sort of baffling, but like the bullets, I'm willing to shrug that off as technomagic.
I think the "like gods" line is more about how much control they had over the "story" and its "characters" than influence over the environment itself. I mean to some extent, they could always have a village bulldozed into nothing, but that's less Almighty Lord and more landlord.
As for having the guests not noticing, that could be as simple as having another host draw their attention away for a short period of time or having it take place during the downtime between their "death" and their next cycle. There's also going to be a discovery that potentially sheds more light on the "in a dream" stuff.
There's a scene where the old guy in charge (Fred?) talks to the lady in charge of security/risk management/ whatever (the one that had a thing with the boss of programming- sorry can't really remember their names for some reason) in a kind of restaurant inside the "park" and then he sends away all the workers that were in the middle of doing the changes he required, and suddenly the ground shook and it looked like something was shaping a huge amount of earth into a large structure maybe a huge statue or something, wasn't very clear. It certainly seems in this scene like he controls the environment with his mind.
Yeah, that was the aforementioned bulldozing into nothing. Not necessarily controlling the environment with his mind, just being able to order that any given structure in his park be wiped away on his cue. As for the timing, I figure it was something like that villain trope where a building in the distance explodes just at the right time to emphasize the point he's making in his monologue. It helps to illustrate how far he planned and how much control he had over the situation. Practically speaking, he could have just ordered the crew to start the demolition process as soon as he gave some kind of signal, but it's less cool to imagine a team of guys standing around waiting for the exact menacing words to rev up their engines.

Doesn't make sense plotwise or doesn't make sense because "bullets don't work that way"?
Either way, it doesn't look like anything to me. The original film version actually did explain how the guns worked. In the film, all guns in the park were equipped with temperature sensors as a safety feature. During a duel between a human and robot, the human's body temperature would cause the robot's gun not to fire, while the guest could shoot the "cold-blooded" robot easily. The unexplained programming malfunction eventually ends up affecting the weapons, leading to a few accidental deaths from people pulling the trigger at another guest or not taking the armed robots seriously. Not sure how the show version of the guns can shoot (but not harm) guests, while at the same time doing damage to hosts. We don't see any indication that it's switching to a different type of ammo, such as blanks or rubber bullets? Don't think they thought that by changing how the guns worked, they'd accidentally turned one of the important plot-points from the film into a bit of a plot-hole in the show.

I'm watching Westworld. It makes no sense, but I'm enjoying it... I'm the same here, think the plot is pretty weird at times and I can't make sense of it at all sometimes and I'm one of those people who really likes to dissect everything when watching a show or movie lol but somehow I'm also still able to enjoy it a lot, there's just something about it

I'm just getting back to the new Black Mirror episodes after watching the first two seasons on Netflix sometime last year.
To me, "Fifteen Million Credits" may still be one of the most disturbing, because it portrays a system that's almost totalitarian and so insidiously well-designed that it requires very little if any direct coercion. To me, there are two ways to interpret what happens to Bing at the end: (1) The judges are so used to viewing everything as simply a "performance," devoid of any meaning beyond the immediate reaction that it draws, that the subversiveness of Bing's message barely even registers with them. What really matters to them is "that was awesome and more of it would make for great ratings!" That's not to equate Bing to, say, a novelist in Stalinist Russia subtly slipping criticisms into a story and hoping the censors don't notice - he just gets up there and vents at them, and probably never even considered that he'd be asked to do it again or given a respite from the bikes. (2) The judges actually neutralize any power Bing might have had by packaging and commercializing him the way they do. He, and those who follow his twice-weekly screeds and express some nominal support for him, may feel like they're "rebelling," but they aren't actually *doing* anything about it, just complaining in small, safe doses that won't lead to anything unless enough of them snap out of their haze to stage some sort of mass uprising.
What makes this so insidious is two things. First, the interpretations aren't necessarily mutually incompatible. The system may be so well-perfected that the judges end up undercutting Bing as suggested in interpretation #2 without even realizing that they're doing it, because *they* have also been brainwashed into playing the proper roles in a society that commercializes everything and "buying shit that's not even there," as Bing puts it, is the apex of self-fulfillment. Second, Bing is still no closer to the truth or to anything real at the end. He has a nicer place to live, but it looks like the view through his window is probably fake, and it's unclear whether such natural outdoor environments even exist any more in this future, or if they've been preserved simply as a superficially attractive memory of what Earth once was. "Going where?! Powering what?!" he demands, regarding the never-ending bike-reading. But he still doesn't have the answer, and neither do we.
My initial reaction to "Nosedive" was that it was kind of a warmed-over "Fifteen Million Credits," with the obsessive "rating" on the smartphones and the aggressive superficiality somewhat analogous to the bike-riding and Lacey's outburst at the end the equivalent of Bing's speech. But something else occurred to me later - technological commentary aside, it's a good metaphor for what it's like to live in constant fear of social judgment from others, i.e. that every little interaction is "rated" in the other person's mind, and that a single big faux pas or a series of little ones will get you devalued and ostracized. I'm not sure if that was intended, but I think it's a legitimate interpretation.
Maybe more on this later...if nothing else, Black Mirror gives you plenty to think about!

The way guns work there definitely seems like a plot-hole to me. I'm wondering if hosts could kill a human by other means, such as beating stabbing etc. I'd guess their programming are not supposed to allow for this? On a few occasions it looked like they certainly got close. It makes more sense as you get through the episodes.

I rewatched Desperate Housewives and my god, this show is just spectacular. It has enough seasons to get you invested (though the last two were so-so), a wide variety of characters and storylines and my god it makes me smile, but mostly cry. I've binge-watched the series the last few days and my god, my eyes are so red and swollen. I had to actually get tissues because I was a MESS.
I truly recommend it if you want something silly to watch that'll eventually pull you in it's world whether you like it or not.

I finally got around to watching season 1 and 2 of Peaky Blinders on netflix, I like the story and the acting is generally good but by god half the cast can't hold their accents for more than a few lines.

Another new series starting 1/10/17 on FX... Only 1 ep in and already I love it. I've read reviews with people commenting that the sounds is bad and some of the actors are hard to understand but I haven't had any of those problems. It's looking to be a great show. I love it too. I actually had to put on the subtitles for the first episode as it seemed that the sound was too low for me even when I raised the tv volume. But the second episode was much better and I didn't need the subtitles then.

It makes more sense as you get through the episodes. The way guns and the bullets work? Not really. I finished watching the first season, and while some things make more sense now, this isn't really one of them. The programming.

Back to Black Mirror - the second episode of the third season, "Playtest," is actually about video games to some extent. The main character ends up in a sort of VR survival horror game, where the game is programmed to detect his fears and then create scares and challenges based on what it detects. Personally, I don't think I'd play a game like that - while I'm able to play survival horror without freaking out and needing to hide under my desk, I suspect that I'd find an experience like that a little too intense. I might be interested in playing a VR version of a Bioware-style RPG, though. Anyway, I actually thought it was one of the weaker episodes of the series. The protagonist, an American named Cooper who's traveling around in Britain but is short on cash and has an ailing mother back home, is sympathetic enough to make me care what happened to him, but once he started to play-test the VR game, I was basically sitting there waiting for the inevitable blurring of the line between the game and reality and the subsequent fake-outs where he thinks he's out of the game and then discovers he's still in it. It does sort of subvert those expectations when it turns out he never even started to play the game. Instead, his cell phone (which he was supposed to turn off) rings, and the signal causes the VR device to malfunction and kill him. Pretty much everything from the past 15-20 minutes had just been a brief 10- or 15-second hallucination the whole time. But it kind of left me wondering what was the point - was this just a really weird infomercial about cell phone safety? A generic "new technology can be dangerous" fable? While I'd probably have some mild anxiety about using this kind of VR tech if and when it becomes available, the scenario that unfolds here would be pretty far down my list of things I'd be afraid might go wrong. If nothing else, I'd assume that a company would conduct decent safety tests for fear of getting sued. (Though Cooper is a playtester as opposed to someone who buys the game after it's released commercially.)

Guess I have to give Taboo a chance, though I heard it was quite dark show. Currently the only show I am properly invested in is The Blacklist, for some reason the new season of Sherlock just doesn't feel good for me, don't really know why though. Desperately need new shows, but at least Expanse is coming back, but I still miss having such long running shows with long history like Stargate.

I just started to watch the series Vikings. For some reason I was under the impression that this was an overhyped pseudo-historical modernized craptastic series using the style of 300 and clash of the gods. You know, the usual trash.
Boy was I wrong, this series is pretty darn good! The acting is decent, the setting plausible, the fights are good and historically it is accurate enough to work.
Also, the locations are stunningly beautiful and they really did a great job with the buildings, ships and equipment in general. Really enjoying it so far, but I have only watched 6 episodes yet.

Anybody else seen the first episode of Legion? Lost my shit when I realized the main character is played by Downton Abbey's version of Alistair Theirin. Someone could argue he's more of the prince Sebastian Vael tho, but they're heretics and will be prosecuted. The ep itself was quite mysterious but that's about it. Need more episodes to decide if I wanna watch the whole thing.

Hmm, I'm currently watching Black Mirror and I got say, it's disturbing but it's still a social reflexion Every single episode finale is a holy shit moment. And while I'm at it, I'm trying to finish Breaking Bad and started watching The Flash with my mother Waiting for Game of Thrones to come out and brother doesn't have time to watch Gotham now, because of college. And Stranger things too. I watched it as the next hype TV show, and well, I didn't like it. It was nothing what everyone has been talking about. But since I already started and can't leave things half done, I'm waiting for 2nd season as well...w

And Stranger things too. I watched it as the next hype TV show, and well, I didn't like it. It was nothing what everyone has been talking about. But since I already started and can't leave things half done, I'm waiting for 2nd season as well...w Just downloaded Black Mirror for my boss last night. I tell people to start with season 2, as the first episode of season 1 can be a bit, off-putting. It's also how I was introduced to it. (Downloaded the wrong season by accident and didn't notice.) It's a phenomenal show. *** Stranger Things, iirc from the Age thread you're a young-un. I can't imagine taking much from the show if you didn't grow up in or live through the 80's. The entire atmosphere and nuance of the show, seriously all of it, is a throwback to that lifestyle and culture. They capture that in it's entirety exceptionally well. From the opening credits to the ford bronco the police chief rolls around in. *** I'm currently rewatching Rome and playing through Total War: Rome II. If anyone hasn't seen HBO's Rome it's a two season show back from 2005ish. It was sort of Game of Thrones before Game of Thrones. And if you've seen GoT but not Rome you'll see a lot of familiar faces in the cast. It's executed very well. It's not an historical documentary. If you're the type of person to nitpick roman authenticity I'd give this one a pass. The nod to an open/less conservative roman culture however, was done perfectly. Blood, boobies, unashamed nudity and sex, slavery and their virtual invisibility, all of it works. That and Titus/Pullo are amazing. As is in my opinion, Augustus Caesar in the first season when played by a younger actor. His lines are written and he plays the part perfectly of someone who is too young to realize exactly what the world is like but smart and strategic enough to learn firsthand from the best. Inferring (usually correctly) the grand strategy behind Julius Caesar's rise to power. I also find Mark Antony's character played by James Purefoy to be utterly hilarious.

I've decided Walking Dead is more enjoyable if you assume that Negan is just a bored ex-internet troll. Setting up a mini-dictatorship and being an unpredictable asshole is his preferred way to torment strangers now that he can't spend all day posting offensive memes online and saying "LULZ U MAD BRO" when people get mad at him. But the show has definitely entered "it's like a car wreck and I can't look away" territory for me. I gave Fear The Walking Dead a try but gave up a few episodes into the second season.
Black Mirror can be hit or miss, but the majority of the episodes are good and even the lesser ones have a few interesting scenes or ideas. I'd suggest starting with episodes 2 and 3 of Season 1, which are good examples of the show's approach to darkly comedic satire and just plain dark. Season 1, Episode 1 might well gross you out, though it's not particularly graphic.
I agree with the post above about Stranger Things, as someone who did grow up in the '80s and watched my share of sci-fi/fantasy movies and TV shows with kids and teenagers as the protagonists. It was an enjoyable nostalgia trip for me.
Right now Better Call Saul is my main "appointment TV." The slow pace is perhaps getting a little problematic, but I'm still invested in the characters. I hope they get through Jimmy's trial and his assumption of the Saul Goodman persona by the end of this season.
And, of course, I'm looking forward to the return of Twin Peaks on HBO next month.
