It did not ruin the character for me, but I too preferred Liara, the Quaint Archeologist to Liara, the Criminal Mastermind. Exactly! She was already important! She didn't need to be the Shadow Broker, ME3 had more use for her archaeological skills than the intrigue and subterfuge! All the Shadow Broker tangent did was raise questions about where she had the skills to survive a career outside her stated abilities! It's what started the questions towards her being likened to a Mary sue

Could have been interesting if Liara were not the Shadow Broker, had only a minor appearance in ME2, and then we pick up with her in time to get Javik. That's her field of study. But we already have an archaeologist in ME3 (Dr. Bryson) and it might be strange to have two.

We all can agree Wrex is the most loved (or at least, the "least" not loved? wha? )

Romance = death! Yep, if they're a romance option in ME1 there are some seriously strong opinions. Wrex getting the least votes makes sense. He's a really passionate guy and prone to drawing his gun when he's pissed off. He's not, however, prone to necessarily firing his gun when pissed off. He'll still talk to you. He basically acknowledges in a later game that he likes to talk the talk but actually knows when and when not act on his feelings.

I have more hopes with Peebee in the Archeologist regard. I've never felt Liara was a real archeologist. Have you ever worked with archeologists? They are supertough, active and funny. Liara is more like an Historian / Classicist and book lover. And I'm a freaking Historian! I thought Liara was more interesting after she became an information broker as well, mostly because she had more of a personality after ME1. I much prefer Lotsb & ME3 Liara over ME1 Liara. That said, the shift in direction wasn't developed properly.

Tali, not because I don't like her, as far as ME1 goes i feel she gets the best backstory/cultural set-up so I find her interesting, but I never take her on missions. Well, Therum with Wrex these days but that's it. Currently i'm using Kaidan for Tech and Liara for biotics, although i get boxed in by flying tables quite a bit. I have to say it's between her an Kaidan. Kaidan't not wonderful in terms of character in ME1, but I've just finished a Kaidanmance run so i'm a little biased. Frankly i love them all.

Ashley. I saved Kaidan in a heartbeat. For future reasons. heh I mean, I have nothing against Ashley, honestly. But saving her meant the vaporization of my future lover (he didn't know it yet) so naturally Ashley was my least favorite. Nobody got in the way of me and Kaidan's toosh.

I was tempted to vote Liara but ended up voting Tali instead. I find them both very rather boring in ME1, and although all the characters are walking codex entries to an extent, imo Tali was taken to an extreme.

Ashley. First time I saw her all I could think was "pink spacesuit, seriously?" and mentally filed her under Spacebarbie. Sadly, my bad first impression didn't improve, quite the opposite. There was a conversation where she talks about her family and her sisters and I almost managed to like her at that point, but then she ruined it somehow. I don't remember what exactly she said, but it was likely some racist comment about aliens or some more whining about what her grandfather did at Shanxi.

Tali. After my first playthrough in ME1, never bothered to talk with her, to even notice her in engineering. I don't like the voice as well, even if in ME1 is still bearable (in ME2 it gets seriously on my nerves).

I'd say Kaidan is my least favorite in ME1, though I actually do like him just that someone has to be last. Maybe because his personality just wasn't super interesting to me? Though I did save him in my renegon playthrough, and I liked him a lot in ME3.
And I suppose it's an unpopular opinion, but I actually like Ash (she pairs up pretty well with my femShep, sort of like a sister). Though I definitely can see why people wouldn't like her. *Shrug.*

Tali. She just talks about her pilgrimage and feels like a walking encyclopedia for Quarian trivia. She's much better character in ME2&3.

I just always found myself disagreeing with Ashley's opinions and she'd end up being the only companion whose equipment I didn't bother managing because I never brought her anywhere. When it came to Virmire, I knew I was keeping my fellow Canadian alive. I have kept Ash alive once and didn't find it nearly as fulfilling as having Kaidan around.

I didn't actually dislike any of the ME1 companions, but if I had to pick least favorite, it would have to be Tali. She wasn't given a whole lot of personality, and was basically just a walking codex to give some insight about the geth.

I have to select Liara because even though I don't hate her character, I don't find much enjoyment in it either. It's a bit difficult for me to explain because to me, it is basically a bunch of minor things that end up piling up to major size. I'll try to explain some of them the best I can. Note this is my opinionated opinion. I felt like Liara was being delegated into roles for the sake of the plot without it fitting her character or being as a result of character development. That probably requires an elaboration. I didn’t feel like her story portions were executed in a way that was enjoyable to experience. Again, it felt like she was being delegated into roles because the plot needed a character to be in the role, not because it suited her character specifically. Sometimes it wasn’t even necessary to put in her in that role: the Shadow Broker proves more or less unnecessary in the next game since her value there is as a prothean expert and honestly, she seems kind of bad at being the shadow broker since it seems everybody knows she is. In all honesty, it feels like either the writers didn’t know what to do with her character until the Reaper Wars or it wasn’t executed as well as it could have been. I also didn’t like how Liara’s design seemed inconsistent from game to game. It may be due to something technical like texture and Liara was just one of the characters where it was more noticeable but then there are things like her eyes. In the third game, her eyes are a very blue, well, blue whereas in the previous games her eyes were a light blue that bordered on being grey. It's not a lighting issue either: I've checked multiple shots and compared. static.giantbomb.com/uploads/original/0/1366/1801061-masseffect22011_01_1500_25_28_88.jpgPre-LOTSBstatic.giantbomb.com/uploads/scale_small/0/1366/1801066-liara.jpgLOTSBIt’s minor, I know, but it creates this sort of visual dissonance for me whenever I see her that I don’t really get with other characters so she sticks out more in a negative way because of it. There were also scenes that I disliked and with some, it is because, quite frankly, Liara could seem a bit off-putting if Shepard had barely any positive interactions with her in the first game and if she's not an love interest. I'll try to provide examples. One is the mandatory hug which I know seems minor to many but still bothers me if Shepard and Liara has barely had any positive interactions with each other. I've heard people say that Shepard and Liara might have gotten closer during the time between the first game and the second game but there's no mandatory hug for any of the other returning squadmates, barring romances, and even if this was the case, it would still be an inconsistency for players because they have not witnessed this change in the relationship. A second one concerns Shepard’s dog tags if Liara was not the romanced character. Why did she have Shepard’s dog tags if Shepard was a spaceborn? Spaceborn Shepard came from a military family so it seems very unlikely they wouldn’t want those dog tags. Also and I don't have military know-how about this but I don't think tags of deceased members are given to people who were not related or romantically involved with the deceased so it seems odd that Liara would have them even in the case of the other backgrounds if she was not romanced. It may be that I'm misremembering and it may have been said that Liara was given the dogtags by Hackett to specifically pass them on to Shepard. A third one is how Liara kept Shepard’s armor in her apartment. This is the armor that Shepard died horrifically in by either suffocated or burning up in orbit, possibly both. It kind of seem like a questionable item to remember them by as oppose to a crew picture and it just rubs me the wrong way especially if Liara is a non-li. Also, how did Liara get the armor? How did she get it off Shepard’s body? Given how Shepard died, wouldn’t the armor more or less have been fused to ‘em? There are more but this is running long as it is. Again, this is just my opinion on why I voted as I did. I know it seems like minor stuff but it adds up for me into major size and that’s why I don’t really enjoy Liara’s character as much as I want to and why I voted for her. Again, it’s my opinion. It’s not that I hate her. It’s just that at best, I’m indifferent to her and at worst, I'm deimmersed by her for the lack of a better word. That is also why I didn’t vote for Jacob because barring that moment, Jacob feels like a consistent character for the most part. Despite intially disliking her, I came to like Ashley in the first game... until the third game where most of the traits I liked her for seemed gone.
