UPDATE - an in-depth thread about this question can be found here:
link
For interests sake, you can still read my thread, but it's more or less all there ^^Before I start, I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere. But the conversation with Gekrakel, Terrell and Witty left me with some questions. Melee defence, magic defence and range defence all cap at 80%. So stats-wise, once you reach 170/170/170 for Constitution/Willpower/Cunning, your defences can't get any better. But what about equipment? If you are at the cap for defence, what does a "+12 % ranged defence" armour accessory actually do? What about passives? Do "Turn the bolt" (50% ranged damage reduction), "Turn the blade" (20% damage resistance from the front), or "There is no darkness" (10% elemental resistance) do anything? Are "damage resistance" and "damage reduction" synonymous, or will one continue to help even at max defence? Are elemental resistance, spirit resistance and magic resistance the same thing? If this has been covered elsewhere, we obviously don't need another thread and I can just refer to that. But if not, it has big implications for builds and equipment load outs! Questions I never thought I would be in a position to ask

Well, defense and resistance are two separate things, calculated one after the other. I think most skills increase resistance.
For physical attacks, of course, armor factors in as well.
Once you max out at 170/170/170, the added defense from armor pieces ( arms and legs ) bonuses are pointless though, since they add to defense.

And with a few keystrokes, my questions appear to be answered! Thanks Mark. A clarification and another query: 1. Is it safe to assume then, that any tool tip on a passive, weapon, accessory or armour piece that says "defence" is pointless once you are at the cap, while any tool tip that says damage "resistance" or "reduction" is still useful? 2. Which of the two (reduction or resistance) is MORE useful? P.S. I'm with Witty. These forums and the pros on them are indispensible

My first post on these forums was on this subject. The question is answered well enough already, but: From my understanding, damage reduction as an attribute doesn't exist. It's just a generalised tooltip term meaning damage reduction from either defense or resistance. What those abilities/passives do is call on stat_damage_bonus_all (if applied to an enemy) and stat_damage_resistance_all (if applied to an ally). And those stats call on typed damage/resistances (physical and elemental). Defense and resistance are the two reductions that matter in this context, and they should be multiplicative. The end formulas are: damage = damage * ((100 - resistance) / 100) damage = damage * ((100 - defense) / 100) A simplified example using an incoming elemental attack of 1000 damage and a Templar with 80% magic defense and 10% resistance to all elemental damage, accounting for the 5% plus/minus damage randomisation just for kicks: 1000 * 0.9 * 0.2 = 180 * 0.95-1.05 = 171-189 Seems accurate enough, right? Some additional weirdness with this: Turn the Blade actually increases defense, not resistance, making it useless with maxed defenses, and the Necromancer's Ice Armor doesn't look like it does anything except add 3 Willpower... This game is a mess.

D'oh! So you did! I missed the thread somehow. Many thanks, to you, and Mark. Your explanations, and other weighing in, are all found here: link
