Oh, Maker... calling Rouccoco . I will say one thing though. I played DA2 completely blind, so that scene of the chantry exploding remains one of the most literal jaw-dropping scenes I've ever seen in a game. I was so shocked that it happened*. * Cue people saying, "Oh, I knew that from the ingredients." I had a really severe cold the first time I played DA2, and I remember laying in bed with my laptop, completely off my gourd with Nyquil and just staring at the screen like what. the. f***. I was so confused, I was literally sitting there saying "What? Wait, whaaat?????" out loud. My dog was very concerned, lol. Say what you will about DA2, but that ending was definitely an experience. I plead the fifth on my Anders' opinions though, heh. I was expecting another cutscene with talking, so I had turned around to grab my water bottle next to my desk and when I turned back to the screen with that giant explosion, I almost did the comedy spit-take thing over my keyboard. DA2 had many flaws, but that ending was really something. Also, let's not pretend I haven't played the game in its entirety like 4 times.

DA:A Anders >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DA2 man claiming to be Anders I liked DA2 Anders's characterization. To me the issue was, as David Gaider suggested at PAXEast, that the player couldn't go on that journey with him. I wish it had been a more gradual experience or something. There is still some of DAA Anders in there, but it's just rare to see. However, I'm sure that players for whom DA2 was their first DA experience (and there were many) don't have that issue, so they look at him differently.

But besides that, the biggest problem with DA2 Anders as opposed to DA:A Anders is that they're characterized in two entirely different ways, and no amount og Gaider trying to justify it after the fact will change that

I'm a mage freedom trash, so I completely understand Anders's anger and his reasons, but I dont approve his methods, and because of that I love him so much, he's soooo broken, he's a mess because of his anger, his suffering because of discrimination, he's human and because of that I feel Anders as character very real. Everyone have their headcanons, but in mine Anders was a stable guy and Justice a good spirit, and both corrupted eachother, for me they were victims of the circunstances. And of course I let him live, cause I'm sucker for redemption and he's one of my scoobies Omg... Hawke and co. really are like the Scooby Gang, aren't they? I love it. This is something I tend to do with sagas that have a good amount of characters, I love when a tv show, game, book, comic whatever, have this group of friends that love each other despite their differences and fight evil together!!! I blame Buffy I know this is not as pretty with some Bioware characters, but I'm a dreamer!

There were also DAO players who just skipped DAA entirely, some with dead Wardens that didn't see the point (not all US players were willing to be cheaty with that), or who liked the RP ending DAO gave them, or any other reason. You can say the same of DAI and picking that up after the reception DA2 got, yet there are also DAI players who have that as their first DA game, as well as those who skipped over DA2 completely.

Actually, I was someone who started the series with DA2. I had tried DA:O, but, and I know this is a heretic's opinion, I think it has the worst combat out of the whole series. I can play the game just fine now, but eight years ago, having never played a traditional fantasy RPG before, the gameplay had me lost and I stopped like 5 hours in. In my opinion, Anders was a good character from the perspective of someone who'd never seen him before. I didn't really like him, but I understood him and I thought his downwards spiral was quite interesting to behold (especially in the differences in small things like the banter between the acts, where he grows less jokey and more gloomy with each passing time jump forward). A lot of Anders' changes between games can be handwaved with him having taken in Justice and the two of them accidentally tainting and twisting each other's personalities, but how satisfying one finds that explanation may vary. Having gone back, I'm actually maybe the only person who is more upset about the changes they made to Justice. I like Cole, but Awakening's Justice is still my favourite Fade spirit, and that makes it a bit sad to me many now just consider him the bad ghost that ruined the Anders character.

Dragon Age 2 is probably going to stand out as my favorite BioWare game in the long run. Anders was different then his DAA persona, but given that his DAA persona was basically just one joke to the next-that's for the best. They had to add some character depth to him, and the way they did it all made sense to me in the long run.
I used to want him to be separated from justice, but now I'm not even sure that matters. Justice actually may serve the purpose of preventing him from dying from the warden taint, so that's a plus.

My friend got me into DA2 first, went into it blind and of course, instantly loved Anders whilst taking an instant dislike to said friends favourite (who I was forced to kill at the end because I never took him anywhere because of his opinions, oops. I did give him a chance in later playthroughs but I'm still... salty) I played DA:O and then DA:A after and didn't have the issues a lot of people who played those two first, had with DA2 Anders. I will defend what he did, and pro Mage freedom to my dying breath. The fact Bioware constantly seems to try and act like the Templars are innocent and the Mages are evil (because they totally shouldn't want freedom from their abusers, right?) drives me crazy.
I just hope they don't continue with the 'look, mages are evil!' if we do go to Tevinter in DA4, because ugh.

Oh I think there was like... one playthrough I didn't kill Anders. He was probably the only companion in DA2 I didn't like. Although it was amusing to play a pro-tempar mage and drive him crazy.

I only spare Anders, along with telling him to take a hike from the final battle, with the hope of him being told off by the mages and for him to be seen as a madman rather than a martyr.

So which do you choose? Vivienne, Cassandra, or Leliana for Divine? Leliana is the one true Divine. I worship at her fashionable shoed feet. Softened Leliana is the best divine by a mile. I did keep one playthough where I intentionally didn't soften her character, but i made sure to make Cassandra Divine, cause hardened Leliana freaks me out.
