Except the "comment section" is *not* casting the entire website in a bad light. I'm also not sure you could have picked a worse comparison. A website with a message board is not even remotely analogous to a human body. Oh but it is, very much in fact. A message board can give a site very bad press, this has happened many times. And judging by all the things I read in the comment sections, it appears to me like the majority of the users posting there consists of racists, trolls and other kinds of utter dimwits. Now who wants their site to be associated with people like that? Especially if said site makes you money? Well shit, in that case we better take down every comment section on the entire Internet.

Well shit, in that case we better take down every comment section on the entire Internet. A prime example of a slippery slope argument. No, just an extension of the notion that people said the same thing about the BSN. In any kind of discussion area where 2 individuals talk to each other, there will be disagreements that get heated about literally any topic that exists. You yourself provided credence to this with your "I've been to some dark places of the Internet" qualifier before. If you want to quell the shitslinging, the only course of action is to shut everything down. Of course, this is disregarding how utterly retarded and loaded "yeah but IMDb is worse!" is as an argument, but you want to say some shit to me about a slippery slope. Okay then.

What is the actual point to the IMDB forums?
Do actors hang out there and interact with fans? My guess is LOL nupes.
Do workers in the film industry hang out there, talk shop, etc? Yeah, no.
I have been on IMDB longer than those forums existed. I am still there, and I have never once used the forums discussed here nor did I even know or care that they existed.
They are not comparable things, totally apples and kumquats.... The IMDB site was literally for people with nothing better to do, that's why it should burn. Start a BBS if you want a club.

I'm noticing that "more positive"="echo chamber" more often than not. I think this is totally false. People have no idea how to behave in our online world and the anonymity that the internet provides gives people free reign. I've never seen one forum in my life where well worded tactful and intelligent criticisms is met with censorship.

If you want to quell the shitslinging, the only course of action is to shut everything down. Wrong. What you need is good, sensible moderation. In real life, if there was no law enforcement everything would slide into utter chaos fast because the criminals and those with harmful intentions would be on the loose with nobody to stop them. Good forums have good moderation that gets rid of those who want to sow only chaos and destruction and enforce the rules which make the forum a civil and pleasant place. Ah, your choice of words make it clear to me why you are ''defending'' the IMDB boards so much. *snickers*

I never found their discussion boards to be of much use regarding movies and TV, so I'm not seeing it as much of a loss to the site. ^ This. Checked the boards two or three times over the years hoping to get more information on some obscure titles. If I didn't discover them by accident looking at a page for more info, I would've never known they existed.

Good forums have good moderation that gets rid of those who want to sow only chaos and destruction and enforce the rules which make the forum a civil and pleasant place. Then turn this back on yourself re: closing the IMDB boards (or any other forum, including the BSN). If either place had good sensible moderation and not anonymous androids or bitter zero-fuck-giving so called "community managers" who couldn't be assed to do their jobs, the real heinous shit would be contained and everyone would be happier. We all know the story of BSN, and as for IMDB they haven't updated their shit in over 10 years. The board still look like they did when I was in high school. Clearly they never gave a fuck about a solid, pleasant or "positive" user experience but now all of a sudden it's a problem? Maybe you should be asking why now?

I've always found the IMDB boards to be terribly under-moderated and I don't even want to start about the abysmal design and ancient board mechanics. Took those who are responsible for the site just many years to realize it, and now they go the easy way which is simply getting rid of it entirely. Its a solution, just the most radical one.

Took those who are responsible for the site just many years to realize it, and now they go the easy way which is simply getting rid of it entirely. Its a solution, just the most radical one. Over 10 years to realize it? I mean there's dumb, and then there's breaking all credibility. No, it's far more likely that something changed with management/investors and/or the wrong person(s) got butthurt about one or two posts/threads at the wrong time. Or maybe like Priestly and the Romance board, some dipshit community manager just needed one big blowup/excuse to justify pushing the closure through. You give me one example of a shitshow board (Walking Dead), whereas I can give you dozens of examples of mostly normal boards, though it would involve me listing every single movie I've watched or star I've looked up within the past six months to a year. Neither of us likely have the data to make conclusive claims, but going by how these things usually seem to go, what's more likely is there's a couple of hellish shit spots in a sea of unremarkable, business as usual boards. Which, spoiler alert, welcome to the Internet.

I gave up on IMDB years ago. Wikipedia is more efficient at telling me what I want to know about movies.
I do remember a misspent youth on those message boards, though. It's amazing how quickly some of my old haunts are getting taken down.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I'm sad to see them go. I've discovered many movies and TV shows through recommendations on the boards. I've followed fascinating posters and had my mind opened to countless theories, speculations, and alternate angles to stories that I would have never considered. Oh well
