Torment HomepageSorry if this is a duplicate post, but I couldn't find a dedicated thread. I have never played Planescape: Torment, although it is on the grand old gaming bucket list. I have wanted to, and this game seems to be a pretty legitimate successor to a legendary title. Anybody playing early access and loving it? Please leave the spoilers out.... The game is chock full of choices at every turn from the description, so keep it clean if you have 2c. Thanks!

I had early access to it. It was shortish, and I played it once the whole thing, then a few times to try the character creation, which was very interesting and had features I hadn't experienced before. It's coming out somewhere at the end of february, if I remember right. I liked it but it had a ton of reading, like a TON. I hope it will be a good game, now the final feeling for me was that maybe the brilliant stuff will be lost in the sea of mediocre stuff. I will definitely try it out, though, the setting felt really interesting.

Can someone please tell us about the action aspects of the game? I heard that there is almost no combat in the game, and that the combat mechanics are not very interesting. More like most combats are optional. You can talk, sneak, or otherwise avoid a lot of potential combats. As for the mechanics themselves:

The combat was turn based, like in Planescape Torment or Fallout 1/2. Unless they've changed it from early access, of course. Correct me if I'm wrong here, people.

I also can't really say that I like their version of magic, the sort of primitive Sci-Fi they have gone for, doesn't make much sense to me TBH, especially their version of mages. (Nano class) I guess I'll wait for a sale... The "magic" is basically Sufficiently Advanced tech. The Ninth World is sort of a Dying Earth type sci-fi. Except I guess in this case Earth has gotten a new lease on life...

How short? How many hours? I think around 6-8 hours maybe? I have approximately 12 hours on that game, and it consists of one complete playthrough (did all the quests available), and several runs on character creation. Of course the whole game is much much longer, early access gave only one site to explore.

I've tried playing Planescape Torment twice and gave up every time. I just couldn't get into it and the damn skull annoyed me to heck.

I also had hard time getting into it at first, but I do recommend to finish the game at least once. Look for guides to min-max your TNO, I would recommend playing as a mage. Around the halfway point the story becomes incredible.

More like most combats are optional. You can talk, sneak, or otherwise avoid a lot of potential combats. From what I heard this is practically the case for all combat in the game aside from very few cases (two or three), I don't find this idea particularly appealing. I much prefer a balanced mix of action, lore, conversations, etc. I also can't really say that I like their version of magic, the sort of primitive Sci-Fi they have gone for, doesn't make much sense to me TBH, especially their version of mages. (Nano class) I guess I'll wait for a sale... As I understand it, Nano's are really just tapping into nanomachines around them, which are apparently just everywhere because of successive advanced civilizations. [Insert "Nanomachines, son!" gif here] Among other things, yes. The air and earth are permeated with namomachines. Though there are possibly other sources of "magic" in the world (extra-dimensional energies, psychic powers, old communications systems still accessible to those who know how, etc)

Since I loved Wasteland 2 and loved Planscape Torment. I used some of my overtime pay to get the EA edition today. Waiting til the 28th would have killed me dead. So here I am....
Plus thats how you do a story trailer. Very engaging.

Any impressions so far? My main concern is the complete lack of focus on combat, and the very few combat encounters.Other than that the game looks nice. If not for the combat thing I may have been willing to pay the full price which seems rather high. That's actually a plus for me. Virtually every game, particularly RPGs focus too much on combat. So far my only concern is there's only single glaive companion (and one companion is a classless, low-stat child), so I HOPE combat isn't too common...

No character appearance customization = useless game. It could make real life become Thedas or take me physically to Mordor, if there is no character appearance customization there is no point in spending 1 nanosecong playing it.

I poked around in there for about an hour. Not sure I'm going to be digging this one as much as I hoped.
Obtuse AF. I think it would come across better had I been familiar with the Numenera setting and core rules beforehand.

As for the lack of combat. Planescape was mainly story and little combat. So in this it seems Torment is keeping in spirit with Planescape.
