I have just discovered something rather strange in the first Mass Effect game.
As most people know, one of the first characters you meet is a Turian Spectre named Nihlus.
Well, I just found out his name sounds suspiciously similar to Darth Nihilus, one of the villains from KOTOR 2. WHAT?
I have only three theories for this name similarity:
1. Bioware gave the Spectre character the name Nihlus as a silent self-jab with how not-so-well-received KOTOR 2 was compared to its predecessor, so they had Nihlus killed off to symbolize that they're new sci-fi game wasn't just going to be a repeat of KOTOR 2.
2. This is just a random easter egg for sharp eyed Bioware fans.
3. Most likely, this was just a random name they came up with that just HAPPENED to be similar to Darth Nihilus.
What do you guys think?

In ME1, the player can talk with Rebekah and Michael Petrovsky near Barla Von's office. They have the same last name as Oleg Petrovsky who is in the Omega dlc. Could be a coincidence they have the same last name

The sequel to Knights of the Old Republic was not developed by Bioware but by Obsidian so that would not be a self-jab as much as it would then be a jab at Obsidian. Arguably undeserved given the shortened development time the team recieved.
If I had to provide a deeper meaning behind the name then the death of Nihlus at Saren's hands could be seen as symbolic of Saren's Face-Heel Turn: one definition of nihilist is "a total rejection of laws and institutions". Basically, Saren rejecting the laws and institutions of galactic civilisation including the Council. That Nihlus is a Spectre and Saren's former student could also and additionally be seen as Saren's rejection of himself - his previous self to be specific.
