Whether it's Mass Effect, Dragon Age, or any other roleplaying game, I've always noticed this general problem that I think effects most casual players. I mean, what's the idea behind role-playing, you're pretending to be someone in a fantasy world right? Well, often times the first character you make in a game is modeled after you, similar look, same gender, and often times when prompted to make a choice its based on what you were thinking at the time. Then you decide to try the ultimate form of roleplaying, where you pretend to be an entirely different character, and when you do that...it doesn't feel right does it?
Regardless of which game I play, I can never make my character be completely evil (some nasty things okay, like punching someone that makes me mad, but never anything super evil), and when romance is involved, it's hard to romance someone else and feel you're making a pure bond, partly because there's something missing that your first romance option had.
For example in Mass Effect, even though I'm trying to play as a female shepard, I keep feeling it's not proper because I first played as a male (because I was a male). Similarily, I'm trying different romances out, but for some reason, I'm just not into them. The first time I've played the whole trilogy, I was always for Liara in all three games.
Sometimes it gets stranger. Whenever I play Dragon Age Inquisition, I'm always picking a female human, heck, my first time playing was with a female human. And I don't even know why? Maybe it's because I've seen too many male fantasy heroes and want to give a female one a go?
The point is, roleplaying games can be tough if the only role you feel comfortable with is yourself. I'm pretty sure you guys had similar experiences right?

N7Pathfinder I think I know what you mean. I always end up making my characters looking like myself, even though that I try to make them look differently, it just doesn't feel right and also with the romances, I try out the ones out I haven't but then I end up returning to the one I liked the most and I can never seem to play as a guy, it just feels weird, so I always play as female. Basically, I get what you mean

It mostly just takes practice to do it and even then, some people might never get into it and some just fall into it naturally. There are people in my pen and paper group that have been there for 2 years and still struggle playing a character that isn't just himself, while I can play just about any range of character no matter how good or evil.
If I ever run into a situation where I don't know what route to pick I just roll the dice on it. I once almost destroyed the entire party because it rolled that way.
Of course to be honest, most of the evil acts in Mass Effect are pretty tame compared to some of the shit I've seen in pen and paper campaigns.

I love to roleplay. In computer rpg's my race of choice is elf, followed in DA by dwarf (the dwarf origins were incredible in DAO). The one thing I can never manage is to be rude. I can play quite an evil character, but they always have manners.

I too can only roleplay myself in RPG's. But playing an entirely different character is not far away from my roleplay experience, I see it as an interactive interesting story and then I start really caring about my character. I also have a high level of empathy so after a while it almost feels like I'm developing a split personality with said character. Its good enough to make me really enjoy a second playthrough (or playthrough +) with a vastly different character, like say a paragon female Shepard. I think thats as close as you can get to roleplaying without actually roleplaying.

I.. uh always play human. Unless I play elves. Yeah, I'm not very original on what I like to RP with.
But otherwise, I can be rude. It's pretty fun. I told people off in Haven as my canon Lavellan about not being 'the Herald'. That was sort of fun actually.

I pretty much like to play my characters as anything but me. I get to play me all day long. When I get into a game I want to be someone else for a while. I tend to look at it like reading a book--the main character shouldn't have a life anything like mine or why would I bother investing my time in it? I tend to play my characters as crazy, whether just snarky and inappropriate or totally gonzo goofballs. I don't have a lot of trouble with male PCs, though I am female, with the caveat that I hated M!Shep's voice direction so I can't play him because he's boring. I don't much enjoy straight romances as a guy PC, though, so it's reason 127 I love BioWare--Zevran, Anders, and Dorian.

Weirdly enough I find it very hard to RP as humans, and easy to RP as Khajiit, Dwarves, Argonians, Elves, etc... Dunno why.

I usualy roleplay as female (more fun that way) but I wouldn't call any of my characters a pure self insert. I sort of let them develop a mind of their own, usually in the course of several playthroughs if I like them and the game enough. According to my personal perception of the game, what is there to do, what I want to do, why it is impossible to do that, perhapsy a bit of metagame... That said, I get stuck with them for hours and hours... so while not modelled directly after me (and quite different from one another) they are constrained to some character traits I prefer (playing a dumb character? a completely humourless one? or an incurable naive do-goodder? A big no-no, no matter how I hard I might try). I also can't roleplay out of the scope of my most basic morality. Most of my characters range from neutral to slightly negative, and I do my best to give each some clearly unlikeable traits (I guess I have my strong dislike for the perfect heores to blame), but there is no stabbing unsuspecting friends in the back, meaningless slaughter etc. And not to forget I'm a sucker for facial scars. the variables in every game change stuff. So do their individual histories and experience. My characters bear my signature, but not personality, I'd say. That would be impossible, we don't live the same lives, luckily for some of the parties involved...

This is part of why strong statistical systems based on abstractions of actual characters is important. It provides a gameplay driven reasons to create a mental divide between you and your character. Even moreso if the game goes out of its way to acknowledge and react to the decisions you make with regards to character building.
Good and meaningful character systems = good roleplaying.
This is why a janky ass broken game like Bloodlines is still considered one of the high points of the genre, over 10 years past its release.

For me, it depends on the game. I can do it in a game that provides a lot of reactivity to your actions, like VtM:B, and I can do it a game with almost none, like Skyrim, but when it's in-between, like Mass Effect, nope, can't put myself in the character's shoes the same way.

I guess I have an imaginative mind. I'm not a hot elf female babe, which is what I generally play as in RPGs that have an elf race. Except Skyrim, those elves are butt ugly. That game I play as a female Nord. I'm an alpha male who doesn't have a problem playing a female. The only issue is in romances, as in my female romancing a male. It just seems odd to me. I've tried it, but it just odd. Now, I've entertained the idea of doing something drastic in Dragon Age Inquisition, like play as a male elf named Boi and get dominated by romancing Bull. But we haven't gone and done that. My dominating alpha maleness won't allow me.

I like to roll with promiscuous bad girl femPCs that I headcanon to have borderline and anti-social personality disorders. I certainly had my fun in new vegas with such a character, particularly with the black widow perk....

I find I can play whichever if I like how the character handles (I'm not fond of playing dwarves, they always seem so slow), because I want to get as much of the storyline as possible, but I also find most of my actions/replies are closer to my personality and what I would do in that situation, or want to do in it. I've tried going the bad manners, kill everyone route but part ways through I usually revert back to being the 'good guy'.

Yeah, I feel the same sometimes. I can't bring myself to be an asshole to my crew/party.
Also, as a black guy, I can't play as a white dude if I have the choice. I can play as a white girl no problem, but I can't play as a white male. (It's weird, I know.)
