Polygon @polygon The newest Dragon Age comic is set after Dragon Age: Inquisition www.polygon.com/comics/2017/2/14/14615414/dragon-age-comic-knight-errantIn the latest in a long series of collaborations, Dark Horse Comics will be publishing Dragon Age: Knight Errant, a five-issue series about the elven thief Vaea, who arrives in Kirkwall just in time for the appointment of the beleaguered city’s latest Viscount — dwarven adventurer, professional second son and bestselling author, Varric Tethras.
Dark Horse has given Polygon a sneak peek of the comic’s first cover, interior art, and story. Written by Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir, with art by Fernando Heinz Furukawa and covers by Sachin Teng, Knight Errant’s first issue will hit shelves on May 10, 2017. Teng also did cover art for Dark Horse’s last Dragon Age series, Dragon Age: Magekiller.
Here’s the official summary of Dragon Age: Knight Errant:
BioWare’s bestselling fantasy franchise lives on in these canonical comics from Dark Horse!

Sweet! More adventures in Kirkwall!
I'm not reading too much into the cover, though. I learned my lesson from Magekiller.

Remember when Mike Laidlaw or someone else said Exalted March would deal with Meredith statue?!!! Anyway YAY Varric ! Also YAY Kirkwall ! It can't be worst than Magekiller.

Never say never. We could be in for a romp through Kirkwall's most noted landmarks, such as Empty Mansion, Empty Docks Warehouse and Abandoned Mine 1 & 2.

Never say never. We could be in for a thromp through Kirkwall's most noted landmarks, such as Empty Mansion, Empty Docks Warehouse and Abandoned Mine 1&2. Those places were great, also finding pants and corpse and bottle of wine of random person number 57.And ennemies going ninjas and raining from the roofs. I hope the "I've been waiting all day" guy is still in there , complaining to Varric , he's been waiting all day. See that comic write itself.

I'm already liking this duo more than Magekiller's, though I'm disappointed that Varric is in yet another DA comic. Never liked the guy, TBQH.

Before everyone starts going "Not Varric again," I'll note that he might just be providing an intro to the city for a prestigious knight taking part in Varric's coronation. He could show up, toss out some helpful exposition and then ditch.

Although this is not particularly related to the comic book, TV Tropes does in fact have a page dedicated to explaining what a "Knight Errant" is and how it was a whole genre of stories at one time: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/KnightErrant

First, an elven squire? Where is this knight from? Is having an elven squire even allowed? Is this knight some kind of rule-breaking revolutionary extraordinaire?
Second, a squire is a knight-in-training - why is she taking on thieving jobs?

Second, a squire is a knight-in-training - why is she taking on thieving jobs? My guess is she's not a squire in the literal sense but more like a servant for this particular knight, she's not getting any training to be a knight. That or she moonlights as a thief for extra gold and the thrill. And I bet that the thing she's stealing is Red Lyrium from The Gallows.

Well, squires used to exclusively be teenage boys as well.
Although the conventional definition of a squire was a knight-in-training, it apparently took on a different meaning later on. A squire was its own rank.

At least this one looks to be going into untold story territory unlike Magekiller which was Inquisitor clean up crew.

I'm excited - Kirkwall and varric again, what could possibly go wrong here? And I do like the new protagonists. I have a bit of reading to do, since I haven't read the otehr comics yet (but I ordered them finally ), but this looks promising.

3 things
-varric tells them to stay away from part of city. She breaks that day 1?
The knight she is with is not the "knight errant". Knight errant involves romance and deeds done in the course of story are for romance. I have a strange feeling we might be getting introduced to future companions based on comics?
Who is the statue with the sword raised high with flames? Quizzy?

I imagine the squire is simply a cover story and neither the "knight", nor the "squire" are what they seem. However, considering this is the Freemarches, there is the possibility that the Grand Tourney could be involved at some point, where the fake knight may come unstuck.
Definitely imagine they will be sneaking into the Gallows. We know from experience how easy it was to get in and out of that place.
I'm hoping that in addition to finding out what became of Meredith's statue, they also continue the plot concerning the Band of Three who were investigating why blood magic and possession seemed so prevalent in Kirkwall. The general assumption was the presence of Cory in the Vimmark Mountains but there were hints about the construction of the lower city and the activities of Tevinter in the past that suggest something else may have been going on there that has still to be discovered.
I'm getting quite excited at the prospect of a genuinely original story in the setting and the likelihood that it could be the prelude to an announcement of the next game.

And the story about the sewer of Kirkwall where some huge runes were drawn in blood etc... Also Tevinter mages were trying to pierce the veil before Andraste and co attacked the city. It would be nice to hear what was going on in here. If not in the comic, some random text in DA4.

A key. Don't tell me that's the key he gave to the Inq. I'll wait for the this comic series to be completed before buying. I've enough of hanging on by finger tips for the next installation.

I'm getting quite excited at the prospect of a genuinely original story in the setting and the likelihood that it could be the prelude to an announcement of the next game. Xenon has it in the Black Emporium. Not to be a fly in the ointment, but I'm not sure about that. Varric mentions to Blackwall that she's still in the Gallows during DAI, and according to Varric's "The Last Few Years" Codex in Trespasser, Meredith was moved out of the Gallows following Corypheus' defeat. The Red Lyrium cleanup in the Gallows is going better than expected. Nobody misses having Meredith fused to the flagstones, eerily glaring at everyone. The City Guard celebrated finally getting her out of there by holding a completely impromptu parade. Several Lowtown residents composed a song on the spot with lyrics to the effect of "Thank the Maker the crazy cursed Templar is gone," which was remarkably catchy-despite, or maybe because of, the fact that it was mostly just swearing in tune.
I wouldn't put too much stock in an easter egg. Xenon's statue could be a duplicate, after all.
