A random question I can't seem to find an answer for.. how does the Tempest specialisation work, exactly? In a Lore context, how could one coat themselves with a fire / shock / ice flask and not die?
I couldn't find what I was after with the codex entries, unfortunately. The item crafted for the specialisation in Inquisition is a smoke flask using spirit essence, so maybe that means it's not liquid at all. And the skill tree describes it as a coating which to me hints at some part of magic involved.
Any ideas?

It is magic. When I played as an archer, I chose this spec. I just head canoned that it was something that you drank that gave you the feeling that you were that. In other words, fire, made you feel like you were on fire, cold, make you cold, uncaring, and unemotional, etc.

Think of it like the Flaming Weapons/Frost Weapons/Telekinetic Weapons spells from DAO, just in liquid form and you apply the effect onto your body, like Shale and Dog. But I agree, it is magic.

Not that this helps, but the way Iron Bull talks about it; it's not magic. It's alchemy.

I'm pretty sure alchemy in Thedas includes some magic, at least in the ingredients.

@ CommandOrk. I think I read in the lore somewhere (or maybe it was a conversation) that some of the concoction includes parts of demons. That is where the elemental part of the flasks comes into play. Not sure what parts though. But yeah, seems like alchemy, at least that is how I think of it.

I had expected something like that, being that the major ingredient of the smoke flask is spirit essence. So, sort of magic but not really? Thanks for all the responses, guys.

Not that this helps, but the way Iron Bull talks about it; it's not magic. It's alchemy. Exactly, it's alchemy, which is magical, but not in the same way as a mage is. Magic in a bottle, really. Anyway, Bull also mentions that you coat your armour with alchemical stuff before battle so you don't burn yourself (or presumably freeze etc.) when you "smash a glass". Basically like a Fire Resistance Tonic, except you don't drink it. I had expected something like that, being that the major ingredient of the smoke flask is spirit essence. So, sort of magic but not really? Thanks for all the responses, guys. I wouldn't put too much stock into the crafting material requirements, since they're mostly a game mechanic. Each flask would have different ingredients, too. While we're talking about it, it makes me sad that only Bull says anything about this specialization. It's a crazy one, too! Not even Sera, who has it. 2 of my 4 playthroughs were Tempests, too
