I just finished the Mass Effect trilogy last week after 2 months of finding time to play the game. This is the first game I've really ever played, having only starting playing games of last year, thanks to my boyfriend. I love the trilogy, even if the ending left much to be desired.
At first I went with Kaidan...and I really liked him! I found him charming and sweet. But I remember in the first game Garrus' passion and frustration with C-Sec really resonated with me. I ended up encouraging him to be a Spectre. Rules are rules, but rules and laws don't always equate with justice. And sometimes, bureaucracy and its red tape does get in the way of efficiency. Personally, I like the idea of bending the rules...always have, always will.
In the third game I was so torn between Kaidan and Garrus. Then Garrus flew my Shepard up to the Presidium and I was like - that's it, that's what I want. That's the one. Rules be damned, let's fuck it and shoot the shit up at the top of the Presidium as the Reapers inevitably draw closer. It literally made me smile and I actually felt like I was going on a date with this badass Turian.
Granted, in the beginning of the game, he was more close-minded. So was I (e.g. I didn't support the geth - oh how that changed!) But I loved seeing him grow and take a leadership role; same as my Shepard. He really came to his own. I totally have a video game crush on this character, I don't know what to do! He's a great fictional space boyfriend....and...
....perhaps this is TMI...but...I just had sex with my boyfriend and felt like I was cheating on Garrus a bit...damn you sexy Turian, and your voice. Just had to get that off my chest.

I did! I actually starting blushing during the tango scene. And I thought that it was amazing how he finally said "I love you too" at the end. Throughout the whole game I was wondering if he was going to say it, since he doesn't seem like the type of guy who would. He calls Shepard his "love" but it's not quite the same. And it might be just me but it's almost like he knew he wasn't saying it. At one point in the Citadel DLC during the quiet party he says, "I love...your hair." Then he snickered. I took it to be he was teasing Shepard over saying "I love you".
I thought it was so touching the way he said it, since he said it so softly. It was really tender! Credit to Garrus' voice actor, seriously.

In Leviathan DLC, if you play the bulk of it after locking in the romance, there's another sweet love-related line from Garrus.

So hey, fanarts \^o^/ always stressed to post personal stuff on forums but hey, we're all fans. SCARLETT, THESE ARE AMAZING. MOAR PLEASE. And as always, I have to post my favorite fanfic. Her name is Roarkshop on deviantart.com, and the fic is called "Sense and Flexibility." I might've read it 3 times. IT'S SO GOOD. READ IT.I know I'm responding to an old recommendation, but...I just started reading Sense and Flexibility, and OMG! Why didn't I read this before?? It's so well-written! I'm only just getting to the ME2 section of the fic, so I have a ways to go still. This fic is amazing

I was just doing the Dr. Saleon mission in ME1. It's one thing to kill the guy but another to have Garrus do it himself. We know this is Renegade and supposed to push him more toward Renegade. Missed opportunity here was to make him a Spectre. Maybe not here but definitely by the time ME3 rolled around.

Missed opportunity here was to make him a Spectre. Maybe not here but definitely by the time ME3 rolled around. I have always wondered how he'd do as a Spectre. I suspect that if his father hadn't interfered, he'd have become one by now, but I'm not sure if he'd be as careful with collateral damage as he is after ME2. ME2 seemed to be sending the message that he needed to see the consequences of pursuing a single minded goal for the sake of seeing tangible evidence for justice instead of worrying about long term consequences from impulsive actions. Even if a Shepard lets him shoot Sidonis, he's shown growth from his actions on Omega taking innocent bystanders into account compared to ME1 where he'd have written them off as already lost. The comics do show him finally acknowledging what his father was trying to teach him: Don't get so caught up in a means to the end that you defeat the point of the end. So, I'm guessing that Garrus in a way needed to go this path to be a more well rounded person instead of someone who'd been given full leeway to pursue vengeance.

If you make Garrus Renegade in ME1 he'll talk about how after defeating Saren, he plans to become a Spectre. After you recruit him in ME2 and ask him what happened, he'll say he went for Spectre training after defeating Saren, but quit because of too much politicking.

I usually push Garrus down the Renegade path when I let him kill Dr. Saleon. I don't remember him saying anything about Spectre training, possibly because they don't actually train Spectres. Spectres are chosen, from the very first one we see in the Citadel Archives until the last one we see, Kaidan or Ashley. Not sure why Garrus would be different in this respect.

Oh, okay. OK, I just loaded up an old save in ME1, Renegade Garrus says he's going to reapply for Spectre training after Saren is defeated. I also found it on youtube. Okay, looked up the wiki. It says it entails a long period of training with a mentor. It does run contrary to what Nihlus said but is consistent, IIRC, with MEA. I guess I was more focused on what ME1 said than the rest of the lore which went on to contradict it (a common thing between ME1 and the rest). Since I just finished ME1, I'll be importing into ME2 soon to get a better look.
It does seem weird, though, that Garrus wasn't willing to do whatever it took to be a Spectre. Even the first Spectre used not-human shields in battle, saying they would "probably" survive. That's what made him perfect and the whole reason why the Spectres were created. If you can't follow through with the training you probably can't cut it. Note that Shepard was never trained and became a Spectre. Same with A/K. They all proved themselves in battle rather than by Spectre training.
My point was that BioWare missed an opportunity to go through with this. He would have been a perfect "plant" with his cover story being that he was on the outs with the Council and so went out to form his own mercenary group. Once Garrus saw Shepard, he ditches the mercs (or maybe they did die - Butcher of Torfan certainly allowed it) and joins Shepard, to find out why Shepard is with Cerberus and what they were up to. My take on it all but, like I said, BW decided to drop the entire point of why you might push Garrus down the Renegade path.

I agree completely that it was a missed opportunity, In ME2, when Garrus told my Shepard that he'd quit Spectre training because of the politics, I was so disappointed.
