Greetings geek. I know you are a geek cuz you chose to click on one of the geeky-est threads there can possibly ever be. I know this, because like yourself, I am a fellow geek. I love sci-fi shows more than anything else....the exception being sci-fi movies. Growing up there were so many great shows,, I especially remember falling in love with the re-vamped The Outer Limits. There is so much sci-fi of everything..that I honestly don't know where to begin.......I was curious to know, what do you like? What sci-fi do you love? I want to know all things sci-fi. Feel free to recommend anything at any time. Let your inner-nerd rage here. Welcome to nerd-fest.

To start it off...what I am currently watching.... Dark Matter. I liked the idea of 6 random people waking up on a ship in the middle of space with no memories of who they are. The Expanse.....man, oh man... this I think, is a must for Mass Effect fans.... the story will sound kinda familiar....set 200 years from now...humans have now colonized the milky way and have expanded out as far as pluto, to mine our solar system for resources...I highly recommend it. I have also recently begun a re-watching of Battlestar Galactica...which I honestly believe, to be perhaps, the best space drama series that has ever been created.

Firefly is the número uno in my heart followed closely by Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Farscape is right there too. Battlestar Galactica is not bad. The 100 and Dark Matter are two currently airing shows that are decent enough. Eureka was fun.
Does Orphan Black count?!
*edit Movies Serenity and Stargate. The Fifth Element Starship Troopers Aliens 1 and 2 The J.J. Abrams Star Trek films The Original Star Wars Trilogy Moon Pandorum Edge of Tomorrow Signs Avatar Waterworld (Yeah, I'm one of the three people on the planet that like that movie! Bite me!)
... There are just too many!

I am about 8 episodes in on the 1st season...she can do so many great accents. Eureka is an all-time favorite of mine. The 100....dope....I love Wanheda......

Babylon 5 (B5) is my all-time favourite sci-fi show. The CGI they used is dated (if you haven't seen this show and you're used to today's graphics, consider yourself warned) and seasons 1 and 5 are weak, but seasons 2-4 are excellent, as is the overall story. Most sci-fi I had seen prior to B5, if not all, had been episodic in nature, or had limited story arcs, while B5 had a continuous story (mostly). It was also darker than contemporary mainstream sci-fi and focused on the consequences of actions, which was something I found refreshing at the time.
Rounding out a top 4 sci-fi series for me (top 4 because going to either 3 or 5 would require some difficult decisions) would be Firefly, Farscape, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. If you're more familiar with these shows, I hope this gives you a sense of what my tastes are.
Note: I intentionally excluded animated series for the sake of simplicity -- also, I've only seen a few and am open to suggestions. I just started Legend of the Galactic Heroes, though, so it may be a while before I get to anything else.

Pitch Black .... man, I remember watching it in the theater and my brain nearly exploded. I went to see it not even knowing what it was about. Yes, I am also a huge sci-fi horror survival fan...I wish they would make more for that genre.

Farscape has been suggested by quite a few of you. I did start to watch it on net-flix. I recognized Claudia Black right away. I am 4 episodes in and I am digging it. A show that was forgotten that I tend to watch as I am playing ME3MP is Space Above & Beyond. It's a show that lasted on fox for 1 season back in 1996....I recommend it.. it's about a platoon of young space marines thrown together to fight in a war with an alien race that chose to invade our solar system. The entire series can be found on you-tube. If anyone is interested I will post a few links to the 1st episode.

I got a list of em, I like the original Star Trek, more for novelty then actual enjoyment but it can still be somewhat decent to watch.
Next Generation was what I grew up watching.
Erm if you don't care about where the Sci Fi came from, Mobile Suit Gundam is a long time staple of mine in the Sci Fi field although it falls into military sci fi due to the focus around war and what have you.

I remember enjoying Space Above and Beyond. It had some really interesting themes, like (if I remember) the dynamic between tank bred humans/soldiers and the other soldiers, and the sense that humanity was really up against the wall. I might just watch that again.
On a side note, I love that the second image that showed up for me on a search for "tank bred" was from ME2. (Your filter bubble may vary).

I LOVE scifi everything (been reading since I was a kid too).
So I just devoured Book 1 and 2 of the Expanse series and season one of the Expanse. I love the books. I have some minor nitpicks but it's a 4/5 for me. The show is great but I feel like it pulls its punches on the horror aspect. The horror in the bks is REAL IMO.
Dark Matters has been on my To Be Watched (TBW) radar but I will certainly give it a higher priority (since I didn't even know what the premise was before I read your post lol).
I watched the entire Continuum series too and I really liked the premise a lot: the future is ruled by corporations, it's a bit dystopian, the main character (whom I love) is a kind of future cop and she is to assist the sentencing and punishment of some terrorists and they all get flung back into our time. Fun stuff! It only had four seasons though and the ending is a tiny bit WTF bc they cut the show off before they got to develop all the fun plot lines but it was still nicely wrapped up.

As far as shows go:
Doctor Who(10th doctor is best doctor) Firefly Star Trek(TNG > TOS = DS9 > Voyager > Enterprise) The Star Wars Clone Wars animated series was great. Been watching the new Rebels one, but it's not as good now that Disney took over.
I've been thinking about starting getting into BSG.

Babylon 5 and Deep Space Nine are my favorite shows. Similar shows but they just do so much right. B5 was criminally underfunded and underappreciated but the writing was so good. DS9 was unlike every other Star Trek show that preceded it and I loved it. And it gave me more Worf and who doesn't love Klingons?
Star Wars is great, goes without saying. My new favorite Sci-Fi movie though is Attack the Block with John Boyega. There's something about it that just speaks to me. Give me a sequel, fam!

How the hell did I forget Doctor Who? 4th Doctor = 10th Doctor > 2nd Doctor > The rest
I really liked the first two seasons of BSG, but didn't care for the last two. That said, I'd recommend the first two seasons of BSG to anyone with even a modest interest in sci-fi.
I'm not a sci-fi junkie, honest.

It is written and created by Ron Moore who was the head writer for Star Trek TNG, DS9 and the majority of Voyager before he quit to create Battlestar....I really recommend it...just check out the 1st 2-3 episodes ... I know you will like it..also, side note..there are only 3 movies and 4 tv episodes that have made me cry in my entire life...Star Trek: The Next Generation..season 1...when Tasha.......yep,..yep...when that episode aired / happened..I cried for that entire night.

My favourite SF shows in very rough order from best to worst:
ST:TNG B5 Farscape SG-1 ST:DS9 The Outer Limits (1995) SGA BSG
Never saw Firefly (can't bring myself to watch a series that gets axed like that) or Dr. Who (there's just so much of it, I wouldn't know where to begin). Aside from that, nothing really unexpected there, I guess. Unless I'm forgetting something obvious.
I've been quite disappointed by all the more recent SF shows I've tried to watch. IMO there are two mistakes that get repeated again and again. Firstly, writing tends to be horrible, and there often doesn't seem to be any real long-term plan. Secondly, in order to make characters edgy and modern and flawed and multi-dimensional and all that, we often just end up with a cast without a single likeable character.
