So somehow it happened that the two types of beer I have available are exactly these: I did not plan this drinking arrangement; it just happens the way a interesting sci-fi film suddenly appears in the theater just when you think there is absolutely nothing to see this weekend (for me that was Serenity after I had totally missed the Firefly series). Anyway, Sapporo Kuro Raberu (Black Label) has been around in Japan for decades and is Sapporo's best selling product. It's a pale lager like most of the big Japanese beers, it's slightly sweet from being brewed with rice and cornstarch in addition to hops, and has a nice bitter finish that makes it really good with just about any kind of food. Old Milwaukee was my go-to cheap beer in the latter half of college, mostly because it won (seriously) a Consumer Reports taste test back in the early 90s. I consider it to be the best of the mass-produced American beers, although you can't find it in most of the country anymore. Unlike the schiesse beers sold by the Reaper Breweries, Old Milwaukee actually does have enough good beer flavor that makes you think someone somewhere at Schlitz actually imposes quality control every now and then. How did I end up with both in the house? I had a few cans of Sapporo I had forgotten about in the beverage stash, and I brought a few cans of Ye Olde M back from 'Merica for my father in law who wants to try "real American beer." Well he hates microbrews so I figured Old Milwaukee would do the job. We shall see. Soon, BTW, Old Milwaukee will be the only beer left in the house, but it's safe because I have to work tomorrow
