... The silver lining is that the idea for Tyranny came from said cancelled console exclusive game. Did it come from the game or from their treatment by Mi Kyrosoft?

I did not buy Pillars of Eternity up until the White March part 1 was released and I don't regret it. The game will be certainly buggy at release as usual for Obsidian and it takes them about 6 months to make it playable. But PoE is certainly a very good game, one of the best ones out there. I enjoyed convoluted quest line and mind twisting combat system. It has also kind of strange beauty in it. Played through twice, second time as an absolutely evil cipher solo on hard.
IMO their writing is usually outstanding.
I just watched the trailers and it looks and feels like a brilliant idea.

The game will be certainly buggy at release as usual for Obsidian and it takes them about 6 months to make it playable. POE wasn't that buggy at release compared to most Obsidian games - I managed to play through it right after launch without any game-breaking issues. However, they did a lot of work on balancing the classes post-release, and the expansions are some of the best parts of the game, so waiting was still a smart idea. (I still probably won't have the willpower to do that for Pillars of Eternity 2, though.)

PoE was supposed to be buggy at release? Huh, I played it day one and never had a single issue with it... Anyway, very excited for Tyranny! I haven't really been following much of what's been said about it, since anything by Obsidian is an automatic day one purchase for me.

I liked Pillars, so I'm really looking forward to this. Plus, a game that finally lets me play out my fantasy of being Darth Vader (basically)
Did anyone see the character creation video from gamescom?

I'd rather have an Alpha Protocol 2. But I'm keeping an eye on this. Looks cool.

I'd rather have an Alpha Protocol 2. But I'm keeping an eye on this. Looks cool. As much as it pains me to say it, Alpha Protocol 2 will never ever happen and if it does it likely won't be Obsidian. Sega owns the rights and Sega was not pleased with Obsidian's work/sales on it. Sega was so displeased that they cancelled Obsidian's Alien RPG in favor of the then in development Aliens: Colonial Marines (yes, we almost got an RPG Horror game).

This is intended to serve as a mega post on Tyranny which contains all major news relating to it. I plan to update this post regularly (so about 2 more weeks) up until launch. My sole purpose in doing this is to try to inform people about the, in my opinion, severely under-marketed game that is Tyranny. Premise: Sometimes, Evil Wins. Experience the new world order under the Overlord in a reactive role-playing game (RPG), interacting with the populace as a powerful Fatebinder in the Overlord’s forces -- roaming the lands to inspire loyalty or fear as they bring control to the last holdouts of the Tiers. Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Publisher: Paradox Interactive
Release Date: Novemeber 10th, 2016
Purchase Locations: www.gog.com/game/tyranny_commander_edition_preorder - store.steampowered.com/app/362960 - www.paradoxplaza.com/tyranny
Retail Price: $44.99 - Commander Edition, $59.99 - Archon Edition, and/or $79.99 for Overlord Edition.
The below sections have been spoiler tagged so as to not overwhelm this page with videos and pictures unless stated otherwise. Likewise, Publisher released videos are always first in the line-up. Character Creation Videos: Gameplay Videos (option 2 is more informative, but showcases Conquest Mode which acts as a prelude to the game and might be a feature that some would desire to not be spoiled and would rather experience. Option 3 also shows Conquest Mode and has Tim Cain, the creator of the Fallout series, playing it): Skill Progression Video: Spell Creation and Dungeon Crawl Video: Stronghold Mechanics and Spire Upgrades Video: Developer Diary Videos: A load of Text-based Developer Diaries: * blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/04/21/dev-diary-1-the-vision-of-tyranny/* blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/05/04/dev-diary-2-the-basic-game-systems/ * blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/05/25/dev-diary-3-fatebinder/* blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/06/08/dev-diary-4-archons/* blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/06/29/dev-diary-5-combat/* blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/07/13/dev-diary-6-barik/ (showcases a companion) * blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/07/27/dev-diary-7-verse/ (showcases a companion) * blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/08/10/dev-diary-8-lantry/ (showcases a potential companion) * blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/09/07/dev-diary-9-beasts-and-bane/* blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/09/28/dev-diary-10-eb/ (showcases a potential companion) * blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/10/11/dev-diary-11-kills-in-shadow/ (showcases a potential companion) * blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/10/27/dev-diary-12-spires/* blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/11/01/dev-diary-13-sirin/ (showcases a potential companion) General Information about the game: *Unlockable strongholds with customization options are in *Crafting potions, poisons, weapons, and armor is in *All Weapons and Armors may be upgraded and carried from the beginning to endgame and be viable. It will cost a lot of in game currency to achieve this however. *There are 4 differing branches/main quest-lines that one can undertake (1 per playthrough) with tons of side quests, choices, and content that are unique to them. *The main storyline takes 20-25 hours to beat, however, it is possible to hit over 100 hours by doing all the side quests (this was done to add replay value). *There is no class system. You can use whatever weapons or armor you pick up throughout the game and level them up, regardless of your starting specialization. *There are artifacts that grant unique abilities (think Excalibur). *Your companions will level with you regardless of them being in your party or not (this was done so that companions would always be useful). *Companions have some abilities that only they can obtain and use. *Skills level up the more you use them (this includes weapon skills). *Scaring someone away during a conversation check will net you the same amount of experience as you would earn from killing them in combat; that experience is divided among your top 3 most used skills. *People scared away that have unique loot will have their loot placed in a nearby chest or container so that players don't miss out on it (or aren't punished for using a viable option). *In regards to there being a time limit on the game (not a spoiler, really, but tagging it for those that don't want to know if the time limit is permanent or not), A time limit is only in effect for the first act and the time limit may be effected by the difficulty (I can't remember for certain about the difficult effecting the time limit and will have to confirm). When I first knew about it I was very hyped, but now I have changed my mind a bit. So far there are a couple of things that put me into the "wait and see mode". The first one is the lenght of the game which is rumored to be alongside the 25-30 hours and the second one is the presence of time-limited missions, even for the main quest. According to the rumors these two things should be related and they should be intended in order to provide an high replayability to the game, To say better, by doing this the player should be encouraged to try different playthroughs with a different set of choices which provide some very different outcomes. Knowing how I like to play my games relaxed and to explore every single thing without having a "countdown" over my head I don't know if this would work for me. Moreover, I don't usually do multiple playtroughs of my games, with very few exceptions, and only for games which are VERY good. In my case including many forks with very few time to think about them doesn't mean automatically "play it again", but it could mean "you'll miss large portions of the game".
Probably I'll buy it the same but unless I will read many terrific reviews I don't think I will buy it at full price.

The development lead, Brian Heins, has said 20-25 hours, but that is only for the main quest. It is very possible to break the 100 hour mark by doing side quests as some of the developers/testers have done so. I'm actually really happy about this length as it will allow more playthroughs and for me to see the different variations in the game (of which are many, according to the developers). I just don't have the time anymore to sit down and play through a 150 hour game five times to see everything. I know that Urqhart, the founder of Obsidian, still hasn't completed Fallout: New Vegas because of the lack of time for him to do so; a perfect example in my opinion. I do think it would be crappy if the game was 20-25 hours long and that there isn't any changes or reactivity though. However, the script being over 700,000 words long is reassuring to me. Yeah, the countdown timer is a bit annoying, but it fits with the lore and delivers a much need sense of urgency. From what I've gathered (and I could be severely mistaken) the timer is only a thing for act 1 of the game and then it goes away and isn't a thing again. I think that part of the point that they might be trying to convey with the game and the timer by extension is that you, the Fatebinder, cannot handle/solve everything and are expendable Conquest Mode offers many choices and branching paths where by handling one thing, you do not have time to handle another and instead another Fatebinder comes along and handles those things. . So maybe that is part of the theme? That said, I do hate being rushed. On the bright side, the timer doesn't countdown except for when you travel to different areas on the map; so you may spend as long as you wish looking around an area that you are already in without feeling rushed. Your stance and views on this are very reasonable, I'm just trying to explain/justify some of the decisions as how I see them and apologize if I come across as forceful or overbearing; not my intent. I'm admittedly biased toward the game as it is my dream concept for a video game and is being made by my favorite developer, Obsidian XD If you purchase Tyranny, then I hope you have a lot of fun with it. If you don't, then I hope you find something else more to your liking!

Drat, both this and PoE sounds quite interesting, but this style of the game, I don't know if I want to go back to it after all the pretty modern games. I'll think about it. They will only hopefully get cheaper.

If the game is as repayable as, say Alpha Protocol, I won't have a problem with that kind of time per run (I've lost track of how many times I've played it). Countdowns could be fine, depending on how they are implemented. I never minded it in AP, or Telltale games. Mutually exclusive content can really keep a game fresh.

It looks like stronghold customization might be a thing :3
I just found out that Paradox/Obsidian is going to hold a stream called 'Stronghold Mechanics and Spire Upgrades' at 4PM PST / 1AM CEST (so, two hours, I think? I suck with timezones).
Here is a linksy (put a space in the https so it wouldn't play automatically when someone enters the thread): h ttps://www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive

Man, what is up with the almost complete lack of any marketing for this game? I'm probably going to get it at release as it does look interesting and ought to scratch my itch for a new RPG at least for a while (or longer if it's really good), but it's really strange how invisible it's been for a game that's out in a couple of weeks.

I have an Archon Edition already preordered, so I did my part Edit: Actually, I wonder if paradox even knows how to market the game? Going through their lists, aside from Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity, they seem to just do strategy games.

They don't, it's always just streams and dev diaries, which are watched by a few thousands of people at best. Though I didn't even need these, I was sold after "bad guy RPG from Obsidian". You are confusing Paradox the Publisher and Paradox Development Studio. First specializes on publishing indie stuff like M&B and Van Helsing. Second makes grand strategies.

Going through their lists, aside from Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity, they seem to just do strategy games. I think they marketed Cities: Skylines, a city builder game, (they published it) quite well, but maybe that just caught on because people started recommending it after Sim City (Online) bombed.

Paradox and Obsidian are currently holding (it is playing now) a Twitch Stream where the chat gets to make the choices:
h ttps://www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive (I put a space in the https so that it wouldn't autoplay).

Seems awesome. I'm pretty sure I'll get this one. Not that I'm impressed by "playing evil" or even interested in doing it, on the contrary, but it seems like a game that will throw out my PC in a world in turmoil, where it'll be hard to survive and decisions will be uncomfortable. It should prove interesting.
