A quick question before i purchase - What is the Tales from The Tiers DLC? I haven't played it myself yet, but my understanding is it includes new sidequests, random encounters, items, backstory about the Tiers, etc. Also, New Game+ as an option as well as the ability to respec your character. I thought NG+ was a part of the free patch, not the paid DLC?

I thought NG+ was a part of the free patch, not the paid DLC? Hmm, maybe it was. Lots of new stuff coming all at once... I think it's just 2x of a combo of a Free Patch + DLC. Patching should be automated when you start up the game, the DLC is a hassle. Overall though, it sounds that it is going to update the game very neatly into an appealing package of content that is just long enough and has enough modular choices to be entertaining for a 2+ PTs. If only it was in the same engine as Origins... awww.

I think I missed something. What happened? Prices on Paradox Int. products increased in some regions. Some people got upset. Prices were (will be after the current Steam Sale) changed back. I suppose, the first action was unwise. The following one might be considered either as a weakness of the publisher or as an ability to listen to consumers and consider decisions more carefully.

It was really weird. Paradox itself kept the price at about $30, but Steam prices for at least Canada went from $45 base price to $60 a few weeks before they released the DLC#1. Then Steam had weekend sale on it. DLC was put out at $9. The price went back up to $60 until this Summer Sale, which dropped it by 50%, which is what it was priced at on Paradox all along, but I think Paradox now is back to $45.... The price of the DLC#1 still sits at $9.
I honestly dunno what's going on, so I am just waiting till I can get the whole thing after it's patched into the final game with DLC#2 and major Patch #2. The patch/DLC #1 breaks a few things here and there which is not unexpected, they are hotfixing sometime soon.
I am hoping for a finished, patched and bundled product for Christmas.

Must not have affected the US, since the base price is still $45, before taking the 50% sale into consideration

I bought this two weeks ago or so and now I got to play it. I didn't have time for much more than character creation yesterday, but I already like it. My character is already "someone" beyond the mere stats in my mind, driven by the conquest section - that was a neat idea. I also like the bronze-age-like setting and had the singular luck that a name that fits the setting immediately popped up in my mind when the CC asked. This game appears to resonate with me in some way. Not sure what that says about me, LOL. In any case, I'm looking forward to what's in store for me. It is my impression that someone thought hard about what roleplaying means for this game - I consider that promising.

Can you be a good guy, or is it not that easy? shades of grey? Mostly shades of gray. You can work "within the system" to try and make things better, or serve Kyros faithfully, side with one of a couple of factions within this region of the empire, or go "F*ck it, I'm carving out my own kingdom!" It is rather interesting: your role is as defined as in your typical Bioware game, but your options for characterization are much more granular. So far the roleplaying has been very enjoyable. It's funny how I gravitate to the centre. In most rpgs, there are options I'm unlikely to take because they're too naively idealistic. Here, there are options I'm less likely to take because they're too contemptuous of life. I'm still taking one of those here and there, though - this the first game I've played that explores evil in this way, that's new and unfamiliar territory, which is always attractive.

But I never felt that it strayed into teenage angst territory of being edgy and dark for the sake of it.

I'm about 20 hours into my first Tyranny playthrough. I'm really enjoying it and expect to start a new playthrough immediately after finishing. My setup is a sword and shield warrior with Barik as an off-tank, Kills-in-Shadow as DPS, and Lantry as a support caster. I've given everyone Restoring Touch, so I have more than enough healing and only occasionally struggle with the combat. Storywise, I've been trying to get along with the Disfavored while screwing over the Chorus at every turn and tolerating no defiance of Kyros.

You appear to know the game quite well... I'm at the point where I must choose an alliance. Story-wise, I dislike the Voices of Nerat, if not necessarily the whole Chorus, and since I'm a mage I don't want a powerful rival. Also in-character, I would like to build my own base, but it appears I must choose one faction after all. What I'd like to know: are there gameplay-related consequences to this choice or is it exclusively a story decision? I'd hate to see more difficult combat as a consequence of this decision. Also, can I actually build my own base later or am I stuck with one of the factions? Speaking of which, I'm finding the combat quite difficult, specifically the fight against Matani Sybil in Echocall Village. I started this four times and when I finally managed to win, everyone but my character and Verse was down - and Verse had been revived once. Am I doing something wrong or is the combat this difficult? This hasn't happened to me in quite some time. Edit: Having said that, the Voices of Nerat has the best dialogue, LOL. And the secret mental messages...."We take the noble path of tolerance, forgiveness, acceptance" *shudder". While from a certain point of view it isn't completely false, I could live without that kind of "acceptance".

And the secret mental messages...."We take the noble path of tolerance, forgiveness, acceptance" *shudder". While from a certain point of view it isn't completely false, I could live without that kind of "acceptance". Well, once you pick a side, the others become hostile to you, and the one you pick is willing to work with you. So in that case, yes there are gameplay related consequences. But mainly it's story-related, as you end up going to the same places with similar primary goals (though the secondary ones may change). That said, there are four "sides" you can work with. What your options ultimately end up being depends on the choices you made (p*ss groups off early on, and you may not be able to join them). the Scarlet Chorus, the Disfavored, the Vendrien Guard, or reject them all and go your own way.
The last one is probably the most difficult, as EVERYONE is against you. The fourth option has, I believe, multiple options throughout the game to take if you decide the faction you aligned with sucks and want out. Re: bases I don't know how far into the game you are, yet, but as the game progresses, you will gain access to...certain structures that you can use as bases and fast travel points. They can be customized to a certain extent. THis is regardless of who you align with. Combat can be really easy, or really hard, depending on who you are fighting and who is on your team. Different factions have different strengths and weaknesses (I always found Disfavored to be a pita). Don't be afraid to use the combo powers that you get when your companions reach certain levels of Loyalty and Fear. They are very powerful and can turn the tide of a battle.

On the solo path neutral (minor) factions are actually neutral to you as well as some parts of the Legion and the Chorus. Nothing stops you from picking every fight on the way, though.
There are 1-2 opportunities to take this path per area, occasionally at inconvenient or unexpected moments.

I took a very long time thinking about it because I didn't want to repeat that boss fight. I'm going with the Disfavored for now. I already know I'll play this game more than once, so I'll take the independent route later.

Am I the only one who played the less obvious faction the first time around?
It certainly seemed so when I looked at achievements back then. Most people played Disfavored IIRC. I played them. I kinda liked it. they struck me as the "least evil" of the factions. More petty, corrupt and incompetent than anything else. So I played it as if I was trying to whip them into shape before I led my own revolution against Kyros and claim the Tiers for myself.

Wow, this game has some of the best dialogue I've ever seen in a video game - full of tension, hints of consequences, implied questions about who you are and whether you should tell that the other side. There are a lot of "I'm just here for exposition" options, but where dialogue is more, in the important story encounters, it's very, very good. I've replayed Planescape: Torment before Tyranny, and...hmm...I actually think Tyranny may come out on top in the end.
Also, I caught the game at a scientific mistake. I talked with Eb about her powers and the moons, and...well....Terratus Grave is said to be tide-locked, but that doesn't mean it's overhead all the time at the same place for day and night as she says. Being tidally locked to the planet means the moon's orbital period equals *its own* rotation period, not the planet's rotation period. So the same side faces the planet all the time, but it's not over the same place on the planet all the time. Instead, if you would stand on the moon's near side, the planet would be in the sky all the time. I don't mind the mistake much though - I'm much too delighted that the game lore goes into such details in the first place.

I also like how much of the exposition is linked in words and phrases in the dialogue, so just just have to click on that to get the context, rather than have to have actual Cabbage Head dialogue about that with a walking codex. Word is, they're going to adapt this for PoE2 as well.
