Ama Dablam, in Northern Nepal, and one of the most prominent peaks on the long trek to the Everest region of the Himalayas. And the Paro Taktsang, a famous monastery perched precariously on a mountainside overlooking a verdant valley far below, in the forbidden mountain kingdom of Bhutan, very rarely open to Outsiders.

The Galapagos, the islands that forge both land and creature anew. The place where evolution is possible to watch as it happens. Here's one of mine, at Canyonlands National Park in Southeastern Utah. It's the only place I've ever seen where you see canyons inside of canyons!

The mighty K2, the 2nd highest peak in the world. It's known as the ' Savage Mountain', and its reputation is well-earned: one in ten who try to climb it doesn't come down. One in four who makes it to the top doesn't make it to the bottom. It's considered to be in an entirely different league from Everest, and to summit it (and make it back to tell the tale) is seen as one of the most awesome achievements of physical and psychological endurance and skill that is capable for humans. And I sure as hell am going to be one of those lucky few who conquers the Mountaineer's Mountain one day! Of course, you can never truly conquer a beastie like this - it let's you climb it. Dude... I don't wanna break you, but with that kind of mentality the most you'll be able to climb will be the stairs to your home That being said, this thread is awesome and I'll try to contribute soon. I just need to find the pics I took some days ago!

I don't wanna break you, but with that kind of mentality the most you'll be able to climb will be the stairs to your home That being said, this thread is awesome and I'll try to contribute soon. I just need to find the pics I took some days ago! I'm an amateur mountaineer man. I've no real Himalayan/High-altitude experience, but I know I have experience with many mountains here in the United States, and I know how to train for it. The most important elements are endurance (high altitude with so little oxygen is something I can acclimatize to), technical skill (I'm a novice technical climber, but I have experience alpining), and patience (the mountain will always be there; the goal is to approach and attack in such a way as to maximize both safety and success) As well, I'm an Afghanistan Veteran, and that's a very mountainous area (the Hindu Kush) within the same geographic region as the Karakoram. I have a general familiarity with mountains that are very high altitude, and experience moving up and down them, day in and day out. To you, that might seem fatalistic, but I've faced my own mortality before It's not something I'll get into here much, but something to understand about me; whereas most people see those odds as daunting, I see them as a challenge to beat them. It's also an acknowledgement of the scale of the challenge. I know what the odds are, and I know what my general routes are. I would go with a standardized approach from the Abruzzi Spur, which is reasonably well-trafficked as to have an established line to success. Much more difficult, and beyond my skill or daring is the Northern approach. And by no means would I be jumping into the fire. I'd first need to actually cut my teeth on the other 8,000er peaks, such as Cho Oyu and Everest. Possibly Lhotse as well. It's not like I'm just going to be like "YAAAAH K2 AND ANNAPURNA FUCK ALL!!!" It's about strategy and logistics, and proper preparation. And lastly, it's also about knowing when to call it a day. As I said, the Mountain will always be there. The goal is to not do anything stupid so that I won't be.

If you literally write that you'll summit K2 for sure, you either write hyperboles intentionally, or you don't really know what you're talking about. Yet. But what do I know, I've never climbed it myself, and maybe never will. But if it's the second thing I wrote, I'd rather you didn't find that out the hard way, so here I am writing this I guess.

Mentality is everything dude. Telling myself I can't or won't climb it doesn't get me up the top. Telling myself that I will climb it, and visualizing that success, is what drives me to push and make the effort in the first place. It may be hyperbole. Maybe I won't summit on my first try. But I'm going to climb it. It's going to be an accomplished fact one day. And if it's the hard way, so be it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained after all. Just saying, a lot of people said the same thing about going to the Moon. To Kennedy, we were as good as already there. And by the end of the decade, we were on the moon. I think I'll translate it to cultural differences here.

Beautiful! You been there? How is it? Australia? Once, and yes I did go there while I was there. Overall it acted like any desert really, very warm, very dry. It was somewhat interesting though. I only spent a few hours hiking around, its still somewhat...dangerous to be out there if you listen to some of the stories of how they did the clean up post drop. I won't go into that, its racial and regional politics that I have no investment in either way, but what I will say is it like Bikini Atoll is fascinating to me of the nuclear age that came just a few decades before my own birth. I mean I guess it stems to me being born, and growing at as the Cold War slowly inched to its close. These weapons have always had some draw to me, and where they have detonated I tend to visit if I can. For example while in Japan back in 09 I visited Hiroshima for two days and while there I visited the memorial park. It to me was a far more potent thing then either of the two nuclear test sites though, this was a actual city where such a weapon was detonated. A city turned to ash in less then .30 seconds. Less a 30th of a second and just nothing but fire and death for miles. Its a fascinating and grim place, but I am drawn to em, I walked through dead cities in Africa across Tunisia and Egypt, places where people haven't dwelt in close to 3,000 years. Places buried in centuries of sand, untouched by humans.
