I've always run the traditional whombo-combo build on the Templar but I've decided to try the Sentinel part of the tree for a change. I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions on how to build a bodyguard Templar and what perks to take.
Tips, tricks and cheap thrills are welcome...

Sometimes I use Proto's Heartbreaker Templar build instead of whombo-combo : spell purge(upgraded) + shield bash(upgraded) + livid(upgraded) + shield wall. Must-have passives are flow of battle, deep reserves, bulwark/untouchable defense (or both). I think the trick is you have to be near a group of mobs when using livid in order to get maximum offense/defense bonus plus as much guard as possible. If you have high enough critical chance you can basically cycle through livid, shield bash and basic attacks. Spell purge itself can deal massive AOE spirit damage if there're foes with barriers nearby. It's especially good when there is a keeper or AW in the team who can put enemies at sleep(or maybe rogues with knock-out powder but I rarely see people use that ability now). Spell purge + sleep = nightmare combo which is super fun I have never tried body guard though. Most of the players I regularly play with really don't need me to take the damage for them

You can try THISUse Line in the Sand on choke points and slay them one by one. But this build is more effective for solo.

I tried the choke point thing, it really has to be a small choke point. And then you realized that with Bear mauls the wolves, you really want them to hit your back, so putting a wall in front of you is anti productive LOL. I tried both Proto's HB build and WB build. I like both.

Ah, XP thing again..... Na, it is more the invincible turtle shell back thing.... here is my first perilous solo video. The first time I could solo perilous with my low promo... all because of bear maul the wolves.. against bolters too. Back then I was using bitter axe and didn't know how to attack cancel. If I was facing them, I would have hit the fade in seconds.

Most of the players I regularly play with really don't need me to take the damage for them Yeah, the one thing, well two, actually, I desperately missed by staying in the Sentinel tree was Spell Purge and Flow of Battle. Bodyguard, I found, is situational as hell and without the upgrade can be rather...worrisome. Particularly in Perilous/Nightmare where everyone may be taking damage, which is being transferred to you. This is especially true with newer players. I started a Perilous match to test it out and someone with a freshly minted Lego dropped in. Starting armor and all. We made it to Zone 2 and he was taking so much damage it started to drain me down as well. Of course, it helped him/her out, I believe, but, ouch. And without Spell Purge going up against anything with shields is a game of attrition, particularly if you have no offensive perks. I think playing a Sentinel build is fun way to change it up but seriously drops the characters ability to DPS.

I loved using Line in the Sand, particularly as it keeps you propped up during times when some factions can knock you down. It was especially handy against the Qunari shield guys who annoy the friggin' hell out of me by taking turns knocking Belinda down over and over again. I'm curious if LitS returns damage as well? There were times when I would see kill streaks and I'm fairly sure it was me getting multiple kills at once.

Tips, tricks and cheap thrills are welcome... Select Avvar instead. Templar is right down there on my sh*t list along with Assassin and Reaver.

Yeah, I've heard a couple of people say something about that. I don't really understand why, but I've heard. However, unless someone knows how to do 250 op's for the Templar using the Avvar, well...Belinda it is.

So, interestingly, I have found out that Line in the Sand prevents knockdown from the jumpy bastards, the Demon Commander and Qunari Commander...at least up to Perilous. I have yet to test it on Nightmare and HB. Still, knockdown was/is my Achilles heel and LitS (every time I write that I flashback to my last NIN concert, in a good way) is a boon in that regard.

Tried Line in the Sand but I found it a bit awkward not being able to move when it's active, especially when there are lots of archers/mages all shooting at you. Also shield bash doesn't seem to connect with LitS on, which means I can still do damage but no cross class combo like shatter or rupture. It's good for stopping melees though. Agreed that being knocked down is super frustrating. I usually use shield wall to block them. It works well against one or two shield guys/jumpy giants/bosses although it's still a problem when surrounded by many. But my teammates can deal with them while I'm on the floor I might also try bodyguard in a private game when I have the chance. Jumping into pugs not knowing how much damage I would take just sounds...daunting

I just run into a pile of enemy types, pop LitS and start wailing away like a madman. Using something like Bitter Axe helps.

Using something like Bitter Axe helps. I did manage to get an archer stuck between the 2 phantom revenants popped from Line in the Sand. Bitter axe was once my favorite. Though it's been a while since the last time I used it.
