Some posters here apparently do not like the guy who wrote the original story (I myself don't know the guy) and think he is up to No Good. Because for some people, especially people on the Internet, everything has to be about politics - even video games. I will admit that I am not discouraging this by engaging with these people. My apologies.

The truth is MSNBC and CNN are center-right pro-corporate wastes of time. Fox News is just right-wing period. The Young Turks, Ring of Fire, RT America while are openly and proudly progressive they don't sugar-coat the news. Ah, now we're getting somewhere. So, while we are on the subject, I would like you to tell me, specifically, what "progressive" means. What are your goals? What destination are you "progressing" to? When will you know you have reached it? To me it means: a fair and equal society. My goal is too survive. My destination is the grave because I know I won't live to see it. Edit: That is all I will say about it in this tread, my way of talking of politics tends to get me in a lot of trouble (because I'm extremely blunt and that tends to piss people off), and frankly I'm sort of tied of talking about politics right now, been doing that a lot lately and don't have anything else much to say other that I'll be glad when the election is over.

Hailing from the UK I know enough not to interfere in American politics, but speaking generally, wow, just wow... On-topic, whilst I don't agree with the closure of BSN Prime, the acid test of how damaging it was to the community (or not) will be whether at the launch of MEA we can attract anywhere near the 5,000 members that BSN Prime had on its forum at its peak.

My apologies. A poster pointed out how "throw everything at the wall" the editorial's criticism is, despite how batty it makes its logic. Well, the author has a chip on his shoulder in regards to Bioware (for him it's social/political), so that probably explains WHY the editorial is how it is. Nothing to do with "we don't like the author, ergo the editorial is bad." TL;DR: Editorial is shitty. What could be the cause? Oh, author is guided by emotions, not a cogent argument.

Why don't you point out to me what you, personally, find to be incorrect or "guided by emotions." He doesn't quote any of these "many gamers," but it wouldn't be too hard to find any of them. Where is the "emotional" part, anyway?

Oh I remember reading that article. I think it was the only anti closure article I found out there. The rest ranged from the typical neutral to the " yeah close it the place is toxic "

I mean... heck, even the article's title - "BW's decision to Kill its gaming forums is horrible" reeks of emotional investment of the author.

It's an opinion piece. And there were a heck of a lot of BSN forum members, ME included, who thought the shuffling zombie of Bioware's corporatist, out-of-touch decision to delete it's forums was fairly worse than "horrible." If you want to see "emotional" acrobatics, go look at the editorial/opinion page (or the supposedly hard news page) of any major US newspaper, such as the Washington Post, and you'll have a lifetime supply. In fact, go look up all the titles of Dana Milbank's columns and you'll see a writer who is very concerned indeed about wanting you to agree with him.

He doesn't quote any of these "many gamers," but it wouldn't be too hard to find any of them. Where is the "emotional" part, anyway? Yeah, going in circles now. This was posted: ... What? The reason (and an official one) of shutting down the forum is precisely because BSN stopped being a place where players and fans could communicate with the devs LONG AGO and use other venues for direct communication. And it's not like it's a lie - anybody who used BSN for longer period of time knows that the dev interaction was sparse in recent years. The point that the forum is a better place for discussions is entirely pointless, because a.) we can have it on a non-BW-owned forum, like this one and b.) the devs hardly ever participate in such discussions or gauge opinion on the game on a SLIVER of percent of players who actually use official forums. The forum (in general) is also no less immune to becoming an echo chamber than reddit. I know, I've seen it happen a few times. From what I see the article is pretty biased - it readily attributes BW rewriting the ending of ME3 to forum being flooded by angry outcry (which is simply untrue - I wasn't using BSN or even playing BW games at that point and even I heard about how many fans didn't like ME3 ending from multiple sources that were NOT forums) and makes a bizarre point about "fielding criticism of embracing social justice", which patently reveals author's own biases. Huh.... talk about "damned if you do, damned if you don't". They own a forum - "they're censoring us! They're using their mod power to throw people out and close topics uncomfortable for them!" They don't own a forum - "they will use their power over fans to stifle criticism!!" I concur. The reason why it was written so shoddily like this is because of the oil-rig-sized personal agenda regarding Bioware that lives up his ass (which is his shtick righteous crusade. Read his other rants essays). Someone who doesn't have an axe to grind could probably write a more honest and coherent criticism of the forum "controversy." Or someone who's a better writer wouldn't let it affect their work.

In fact, go look up all the titles of Dana Milbank's columns and you'll see a writer who is very concerned indeed about wanting you to agree with him. You're missing the point - whether it's an editorial or an article doesn't change the fact that it's heavily emotionally charged. You've asked people what was in that piece that was "guided by an emotion". I've responded to that and pointed out that even the title indicates that pretty much the whole piece is. So don't "seriously" me, since you have no reason for it. Also - whether YOU thought that the decision is "beyond horrible" or what is the state of any major newspaper is beside the point as well. But since we're at it: I myself didn't really cry over BSN. I get why they did it. Though I didn't laugh about it either - mostly my reaction has been tempered by the fact that important threads have been archived elsewhere and people on BSN I cared about stayed in touche and moved to other places, this one included. Not really much has changed, it seems. Aside from complaining at BW forum moderation I guess... Well, and maybe all the annoying threads the like of "BW, be like X!" or "BW, do that or don't do that, or else!" or "BW, why Cassandra looks like a man!" that might have been funny for a second, but got old fast and were filled with a lot of sneering and shouting.

Shutting down the forums is another nail in the coffin. This video provides a good summary of events, IMO.

True, BioWare may have lost their forums, their staff and their position. But they didn't lose us. If rEApers came to destroy us then we will be the beacons. If the BioWare flagship is sinking then we will be swimming in its shape.
We are the community, the people, what keeps a franchise and a company going, what gives it life and purpose, shape and form.
Everyone here is more than just a member of a discussion, they are those who stood side by side with the people and not the profit.
When I look at all of you I personally feel obliged to tell that BioWare never dissolved, it simply returned to being an idea of many dedicated people.
And once Andromeda comes out, we will grab our modding tools... We will grab our people... And WE WILL REBUILD. WE WILL RETAKE. WE WILL RETURN!

I will miss the BSN boards for all the awesome inside jokes that made it into the games. For instance, that dude that showed up asking what Tali's sweat might smell like. I love that the citadel dlc included that. Get Tali good and drunk and she's like, "Whaaat? It just smells like sweat. What else would it smell like?" I'll miss you, BSN.

This post redirects a discussion that was happening (off-topic) here: bsn.boards.net/post/203627/threadI'll just put this out there: Whatever the decision-making process involved in the closure of the official forums, this forum has only ever had friendly wishes from BioWare: And I might add, that friendliness was there even behind the scenes, pretty much on day one when we were nailing down the name of our forum. Let's face it, we're pretty much appropriated their old forum name: 'BioWare Social Network' and slapped 'unofficial' on it. If I have to read between the lines, BSN Prime had developed a certain 'reputation' for toxicity. Some of that goes back to the days of 'Retake Mass Effect' and the ability people have of sticking their fingers up at BioWare when on the official site. (Biower pls) In short, it just got too difficult for them. A toxic forum that they either didn't know how to handle or have the bandwidth to handle. With MEA on the horizon they looked at the forum in the summer of 2016 and asked themselves, are we ramping this thing up ready for MEA? And the answer was no. For reference, there are two further archived threads, one a 'goodbye' thread and the second a curation of the last posts made on BSN Prime: "Goodbye" bsn.boards.net/thread/625"Last post" bsn.boards.net/thread/689In the words of Solas , 'blep mlem mlem'...
