So, I'm already up to the point where you first meet the Angara and Jaal... and...
did... someone completely forget how to do the whole 'first contact with an alien species' and lamp shading the whole 'suddenly we all speak English' thing?
Like, there's no explanation for this, at all. There's angara speaking their language and then all of a sudden, Paaran and Jaal and everyone else is talking English? And they know about the Initiative.. like... what? SAM calls them Angara right off the bat, no slow down, new aliens, hi, sort of thing.
Does this get explained later? Or is it just like 'go with it'

It could have something to do with SAM being a good language cracker, but more likely they just handwave it, unless it comes later with explanation or in the codex. This is no longer the ME team that cares about lore details, that ship sailed a long ago, at the start of ME2.

Just go with it. Don't ask sensible questions like "Sam, how did you decode this alien language in 2 seconds that we literally had no previous knowledge of and no reference points to use? Like this is first contact for us and you're already an expert on their entire culture and history"
"I am an AI pathfinder. Its what I do. Your dad built the most advanced AI in history in his garage after work, implanted it into his brain, and managed to keep it secret from literally the whole galaxy, like the council who would send spectre's after anyone researching AI"
It's like that part in Indepenance Day where Jeff Goldblum hacks into the alien mothership with his windows laptop.

I thought the Angara had already been in contact with the exiles long before we arrive? I haven't met any exiles yet, and if that's the case, why doesn't Ryder bring it up "How am I able to understand you and you able to understand me?" "Oh we've met your people already." Like, is that so hard?

you know, Asari, Turians, etc. don't actually speak english.
Omni tools have real time translation software. That's the cop out they used in the past to explain language.

There is no basis for the Angaran translations. Unless, indeed, they've been in contact with the exiles and everyone's translator got a software update or some bullshit.

There's a cut scene where all the squad mates are talking and Jaal is sat there and someone asks him a question, but he doesn't reply, and Cora is like "...Is the translator working?" and he says "It's working." So, I guess that's how they're talking. How they have access to translate it so soon isn't clear. I found it cool that we couldn't understand the Kett when we first met them

So i just reached Aya, and i am wondering this myself. When you land though the Angaran soldiers do scan you with something. Its possible since you've Interacted with Remnant tech that they recognize you through some form of signature. Its really weird, and a bit hand waved. Thank god Jaal is worth it!

I found it cool that we couldn't understand the Kett when we first met them Translators isn't the issue, how are they able to use translators pretty much immediately at first contact is the issue. Even SAM would take a while to pick it up, and then that's only one way, Ryder can understand the Angara but they can't understand Ryder.

It's the same with that scene from ME3's Citadel DLC. In the Spectre vault you see video of the first human interrogation during the first contact war. How the heck did the humans and turians communicate?
I dunno. The thing with Jaal was really noticeable to me, too, but I just figured SAM worked out some translation thing and whatever. Suspended disbelief.
But it's odd that Bioware chose to make a thing about them NOT understanding each other right before they DO understand each other with no explanation.

In the comics, turians and humans were talking to each other too. If we assume a lot of the Milky Way's tech is based on Reaper/Prothean tech, it may have taken a while, but eventually would be able to translate. Even if we assume the technology was purely of human/turian design, it's the same principle. It's not the issue that the technology to decode and translate doesn't exist, it's suspension of disbelief of how long it would take. Would the Angara even have this technology?

I just got to the scene in question in my own playthrough.
First they scan Ryder. Then the woman says "Yes, you travelled here from dark space. I've heard of your journey." Some Angara NPC's in the background can be heard saying "It's a human. I've seen one before".
It seemed pretty clear that it was not the first time the Angara have interacted with the milky way species.

I mean, you meet aliens, they speak perfect English, you aren't just a little curious about that?

I think i know how they met humans now. Some stuff in the main story makes it clear. To bad you have to progress way past that point to finally get there.

So, yeah, I think the angara had the tech because they knew of the Milky Way settlers already. I'm not at that point in the story, yet, but I'm assuming that there are also angara who established trade with the Outlaws since we saw it in the trailer and we see angara in the Outlaw faction in Multiplayer. But to the turian thing, no, I don't buy that any more than this. The Spectre vault shows us what it calls the first contact of humans and turians. It's a captured human have a fluid conversation with a turian. Sure, I can head cannon it and say that maybe there's something in the prothean vaults that allowed both species to have communicators ready and able to talk to each other right away, but that's more of a stretch than accepting that the angara's awareness of the milky way species pre-Ryder means they probably have already developed a translator and just had to use it. All that said, I'm still in the camp that this was jarring and did take me out of the immersion for a moment.

Haven't read all of the responses so this may have been already said. But in the first dialogue aboard The Tempest, Liam asks if the translator isn't working since Jaal didn't say anything at first
