History and bio of famed Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky that centers around his mock execution. I have just started to read my 3rd Dostoyevksy novel.

Bio of WW1 Serbian Field Marshall Stepa Stepanović, whom previously fought in the Serbian-Ottoman war, Serbian-Bulgarian war and in both Balkan wars. In WW1 he lead the Serbian army into great victories that humiliated the larger Austro-Hungarian empire during their initial invasions of Serbia(The Serbian victory in the battle of Cer was the first allied victory of the war and the battle where the first dogfight occurred), and he continued to lead the Serbian army until the very end of the war in the Macedonian front, after the Central Powers ultimately occupied Serbia and caused their exodus from the country.

The wealthiest athlete of all time lived almost 2,000 years ago.
Gaius Appuleius Diocles (104 AD - 146 AD), a charioteer from Lusitania (modern day Portugal), amassed over 35,000,000 sesterces in a 24 year racing career in ancient Rome's Circus Maximus. That is the equivalent of 15 billion US dollars, enough cash to feed the entire city of Rome for a year or to pay the entire Roman Army at it's height for a fifth of the year. For comparison, his winnings dwarf the roughly 1.14 billion dollars amassed by Michael Jordan during his NBA career. During his career he won 1,462 out of the 4,257 races he competed in, often thrilling crowds with frequent come-from-behind finishes in the last moments of a race.
Speaking of the Circus Maximus...
Contrary to popular belief gladiatorial bouts weren't Rome's favorite spectator sport. They came a distant second to chariot races. The Flavian amphitheatre (a.k.a. the Colosseum) sat around 50,000 spectators, the Circus Maximus at it's largest (it was expanded during it's long history), 250,000.

With 99.99% accuracy Circus Maximus looked like this: Urge to rewatch Ben Hur intensifies. There are some Hollywood moments and the setting is Judea instead of the Circus Maximus, but that's got to be one of the best action sequences ever filmed. It probably captures what it must have been like to be watching those races too, even if not all the details are accurate. Man, it sucks that time travel isn't a thing! Watching an ancient chariot race might be top of the my list of Things to Do in the Ancient World.

In 1927 85 year old American Civil War veteran (Union) Laurentine Higbie was recorded singing a tune called The Veteran's Last Song, in tribute to his comrades that had passed on. It was recorded at a time when many of the remaining civil war veterans were starting to pass on, not unlike today and our vanishing World War Two veterans.
I think it's pretty cool to hear the voice of someone who was born in 1842(!) and fought in a war that ended in 1865. Almost like stepping back in time.
Not bad for an old guy, either!
Lyrics:
I am standing of the summit, of a century of years That hath measured the life of our nation, And I see on down that mountain, A flood of blood and tears That was shed for our country's salvation. And I see a mighty legion, who for the nation's life Went forth in young manhoods fresh glory, And I see a mighty legion, who perished in the strife Now sleeping in garments stiff and gory. And we’re going soon to meet them in that bivouac of the soul As the shadows around us give warning, And I want to see my comrades when the angels call the roll, All are ready for inspection in the morning. We were boys when we enlisted, and these wrinkled brows were fair, And our eyes where undimmed in their vision, And the frost that never melts had not gathered on our hair, And our step had not lost its precision. But the years have built their terraces on every comrade's brow, And age makes our weary limbs quiver, And the frosts are falling thick and we’re on the double quick to the camp that is over the river. And we’re going soon to meet them in that bivouac of the soul As the shadows around us give warning, And I want to see my comrades when the angels call the roll, All are ready for inspection in the morning.
(Last verse - not sung on the record) But though the Veterans vanish their children still remain, The deeds of their Fathers to cherish. And the cause for which we battled our children will maintain, And the foes of our banner shall perish. For we battled not in vain if still that banner waves, Through ages our nation adorning. And loyal hands shall plant it with the flowers on our graves, Till the great reveille in the morning. And we’re going soon to meet them in that bivouac of the soul As the shadows around us give warning, And I want to see my comrades when the angels call the roll, All are ready for inspection in the morning.

I found this inscription from Artabanus III (ruled 10-38 AD) to people of Susa (which is close to my birthplace) in Greek. There lived many Greeks in Persia since the time of Alexander the great (4th century BC), until the 3rd century AD. I wonder if anyone can read it! His reign is quite interesting: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artabanus_III_of_Parthia
