In the cold war era a series of military history documentaries were made for the British Army for training purposes. As they were not made for civilians (or released) they have a more tactical focus and tend to linger on specific sectors and unit engagements rather than a general broad brush overview of the entire front. The following are a couple of films from 1980 covering the German Ardennes offensive of 1944. The training archive has recently (2019) been uploaded (official) to youtube.
"An historical record of the last German Offensive in WWII known as the ''Battle of the Bulge''. Part 2 concentrates on the most dangerous German thrust and show how the heavily out-numbered Americans fought desperately for two weeks to delay the advance until a successful counterattack could be mounted. The fog of war, the values of leadership and how small but determined groups of men can delay heavy armoured attacks are vividly portrayed." (British army documentaries, includes veteran interviews of both sides)
"This film is part of a comprehensive collection of contemporary Military Training programmes and supporting documentation including scripts, storyboards and cue sheets."

Spitfire 85th AnniversaryToday marks the 85th anniversary of the maiden flight of the Spitfire. Construction of K5054 began in December 1934 and her maiden flight lasting eight minutes was on 5 march 1936 at Eastleigh Aerodrome (later Southampton Airport) piloted by Vickers' chief test pilot Joseph "Mutt" Summers. K5054: (Vickers) Supermarine Type 300 prototype Spitfire, also called Supermarine Spitfire, the most widely produced and strategically important British single-seat fighter of World War II. The Spitfire, renowned for winning victory laurels in the Battle of Britain (1940–41) along with the Hawker Hurricane, served in every theatre of the war and was produced in more variants than any other British aircraft. In all, 20,531 Spitfires in 40 different modifications, or Marks, were built. Spitfire designer and developer: R J Mitchell
R.J. Mitchell, in full Reginald Joseph Mitchell, (born May 20, 1895, near Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England he died from cancer June 11, 1937, Southampton, Hampshire). R J Mitchell was born in 1895 in Staffordshire, England. After secondary schooling Mitchell was an apprentice at a locomotive works. At the end of his apprenticeship he worked in the drawing office and studied engineering and mathematics at night school. In 1916, before the age of 22, he went to work at Supermarine Aviation Works in Southampton, where he remained the rest of his life, serving as the company’s director. He designed seaplanes (used largely for racing) between 1922 and 1931 and by 1936 had designed and developed the Spitfire. In August 1933, Mitchell underwent surgery to treat cancer. In 1936 cancer was diagnosed again, and subsequently, in early 1937, Mitchell gave up work, although he was often seen watching the Spitfire being tested. He died on 11 June 1937 at age 42 and was succeeded by his long-term collaborator, Joseph Smith, who oversaw the Spitfire’s many developments over the years.

And if you are in to Spitfires, you are kind of into Seafires as well: I like the fact that he is a RNVR pilot. The carrier is HMS Indomitable.

On German chancellor Adolf Hitler's military service in the first world war. Lance-Corporal Hitler - WW1 Trench RunnerIt really is staggering how the Bohemian Corporal rode his luck, narrowly escaping death countless times in the most fortuitous circumstances. The failure of the Cointreau bomb aboard his plane is particularly lucky, the time fuse successfully activates mid air but the detonator freezes due to the cold temperature of the cargo hold. Incredible that out of all the incidents and attempts on his life the only deadly one was his own.

And if you are in to Spitfires, you are kind of into Seafires as well: Really stems from hearing family stories, had a relative that served in RAFVR (volunteer reserve) during WW2 unfortunately lost MIA during the Axis siege of Malta in 1942. Don't know which particular aircraft he was involved with but the Spitfire is always a good tribute/commemoration choice.

It was taken in 1943 in the US, after the Sea Hurricanes were replaced by Seafires, but HSM Indomitable took part in Operation Pedestal in 1942. Loss of life was heavy indeed. And there were Spitfires stationed at Malta, so chances are he flew one.

Yeah I'll need to do a bit of records research. I've got his name, rank and serial number so that's a start and should make things a bit easier. That's the thing with the lack of details there are a number of different variables, maybe his convoy ship was sunk en route, was he killed in air combat or enemy bombing ? and so on. When a story get's passed on a lot of the details get lost as the people that are still here and remember it were very young children at the time of the event and are now rather elderly. It would be good to fill in some of those missing details.

I believe the records are mostly digital, so you may get all the information without having to go there. And I recommend you do the search; it would be good to know what happened to him. Of course it it possible that the records are incomplete, but even that would add to the information you have.
I hope you find him.

I suppose its history: The date was the 5th November 1996: the day of the US presidential election. The two candidates were in a close contest and the result was not yet clear. Out of this, an amazing crossword was compiled in the New York Times. One clue read, 39. The headline of tomorrow's newspaper (!), with 43. across. This clue was either going to be Clinton Elected, or BobDole Elected, but the crossword was set up so that either clue would fit. www.alaricstephen.com/main-featured/2017/7/3/the-clintonbobdole-crossword

The devil doesn't claim the souls of his lackeys until they have run their course of evil. ...But he does harvest them in the end. Alternatively, you could say that this luck of Hitler's, was balanced by his "bad luck" when he was thinking and planning.

the last telegram from kaiser Wilhelm II to tsar Nikolas II sent right before the German declaration of war on Russia: and yes, this is a photo of the original telegram. and yes, the original was in English, they both spoke it as they were both closely related to queen Victoria and to each other (hence "Willy" and "Nicky" as they called each other).

At this time Britain, Russia and Germany's heads of state were cousins. Probably one of the bloodiest family disputes in history. not only that, Victoria's spawn was all over Yurop at that time. Royalty is a cesspool, really, but the popular history only remembers the inbreeding of the Habsburgs. at the time of Charles II, the infamous last Habsburg king of Spain, an ugly result of centuries of inbreeding, etc etc -- England was ruled by William III who married his 1st cousin Mary (daughter of his uncle), France was ruled by Louis XIV who married his 2nd cousin Maria Theresa (they both had the same grandparents), and Austria was ruled by Leopold I who married Margaret Theresa who was his niece AND his 1st cousin at the same time. And all monarchs of the major Europe powers (France, England, Spain, Austria) had some degree of relation to each other. But yeah, those freaky spanish Habsburgs eh? When in reality ANY royal house of Europe is guilty of some heavy inbreeding. Henry IV of France and his wife Maria de Medici were grandparents of Louis XIV of France, Charles II of England, Charles II of Spain, Leopold I of Austria, William III of England and Holland, Charles Emmanuel II of Savoy and a fuckton of some other rulers that I'm too lazy to google. same with the 100y war or pretty much any medieval and early modern european war. They all were basically family squabbles.

Two random things I have learned this weekend: 1 - The modern bra was invented in 1914 from two silk handkerchiefs and some ribbon. Although variations have existed since at least ancient Greece, this is where the modern bra took shape. This was learned as a result of a discussion about why pointy coney boobs were popular on TV in the black and white days. We assumed that it was simply a limitation of construction methods at the time, but instead learned that this was actually by design and the result of spiral stitching. What can I say, I love boobs. 2 - Macaroni is not an elbow shaped pasta, although elbow shaped pasta is macaroni. Macaroni is the generic word for dried pasta in any form. This was learned as we watched a cooking show where the contestants were forced to use a pasta called "zito lungo", essentially long ziti. It was an odd form factor that requires breaking to be useable, and we could not understand why it would be made this way. I didn't really find a satisfactory answer for the reason behind the form, but I did learn that ziti has only been around since the invention of the pasta press or torchio made in the 1700s. I made assumptions about the form factor thinking it was old, and then became confused when I learned that macaroni is one of the three "original" pasta types (others being ravioli and vermicelli). How could they make an elbow noodle before the press was invented? They didn't, I didn't know what macaroni actually means. Thanks Kraft

Hi everyone, I'm pretty much an all constant lurker on the website here. But recently I got back into reading/watching history again as a hobby. So far I found some really treasure troves on this thread (thx all!). However, I pretty much encounter a lot of content is about Western history and mostly their point of view (France, Rome, HRE, England etc.). I wanted to brush up a bit and read up on other regions (like F.E. India) but having a hard time to finding a decent source (internet or otherwise)of information. Does anyone have online content or literature to recommended for this? Thanks in advance!

Here's a few samples.. Actually it may be worth trying posting in their comments you might get more help and a few recommendations/tips.
