I clicked on a Tali thread on old BSN. Got fired immediately.
(not really, but that's probably what would happen, even if you had the most lenient boss in the world)

I'm a SAHM so nope not getting fired, ever. For you scrubs without kids, SAHM= stay at home mom, or in ye olde parlance- housewife. I cannot even walk right now anyway (broken ankle, healing still) so anyone I have that is a follower and is all salty about my billionz of posts, is going to have to suck it up and put a band-aid on it! I'm a rapid reader and usually around 90wpm at typing so posting is like IM during the AIM days practically. My kids (the 3 eldest) just started school again- I'm at home with my 2 year old all day, and temporarily disabled which means I play fun games with 2 year old daughter teaching her how to be my helper monkey and it's like having a 2 year old tied to your walker and doing all tasks connected at the the hips, it's challenging but doable and funny. I'm doing range of motion exercises while I'm on here. Oooh ow, I hope your ankle heals quickly. It must be hard taking care of 3 kids with a bad ankle. If you're a SAHM, I guess I would be a SAHG... stay at home grandma. I basically earn my keep by providing lunch time/after school/seasonal breaks for my grand daughter, so no I won't get fired, but my computer time is limited because it's the grand daughter's computer and our agreement is I can only use it when she's not at home, at her dad's or in bed. She's an adorable 9yr old tyrant..LOL

I used to work and do this at the same time in the Army.
Granted, I had some pretty nice privileges as an Officer. When I wasn't actually doing anything related to my branch mission, I'd do administrative stuff, like planning, scheduling for dates on the range, compiling and disseminating orders, issuing Provost Martial Subpoenas to my Soldiers, and all the assorted work that comes with running a Platoon. After I got promoted, I took on staff duty, and basically traveled across the country as a trouble-shooter for electronic and intelligence networks. All the travel time got me a lot of time to spend on the internet.
It was more of the same as a Company Executive Officer (with more travel too). Then I got my own Company, and suddenly, I didn't have a lot of free time to fool around as much. I had another deployment in 2014 through to 2015 in Qatar and Iraq, and I rarely had time to get on here. Now, I'm out, and jobless for the time being. And still recovering from surgery two weeks ago.

Me being here allowed my daughter to get a job at the library, it made it so she didn't have to hire a babysitter and I love it. I have friends who never get to see their grand kids and here I am living with mine! An astronaut ! That would be great! My little grand daughter wants to be a teacher.

I work from home too. I just have to he careful what tabs are open when i am on the vpn, cuz big bro and all that.... I do have to watch what i am doing, because inserting a gif randomly into a proof and returning it before realising has never happened and would get me into huge trouble if i don't realise shortly after and panic message the typesetters with a non-giffed version....

No boss here as well. My grandparents gave me their business 7 years ago...it was 1 store then ....I turned it into 4 stores ..and am possibly expanding into 2 more by the years end.....I told each stores manager what I expect from them each month...I don't go into the stores anymore unless I really have to....

Yeah my 9yr old daughter and I had a convo the other day- where she calculated when she could go to Mars since I told her there were some private projects already started right now with the goal of going to Mars LOL. She told "aww man but I'll only be 14!!!" so I had her look up the requirements for essentially what would be good to learn and do to be an astronaut and told her about the demise of the US NASA program- we have zero real plans for sending out any further missions iirc since they retired the space shuttle program. Also my mother in law moved recently- she's about a 10 minute drive from me- so she could see our kids more often. And yes, she's awesome, I love my mother in law a LOT, and she's even taking me to physical therapy and watching my toddler so I can do it with less stress, so I am immensely grateful for all of her thoughtful help. It's awesome you get to spend time and live with your daughter and grand baby. I'm crossing my fingers I can convince my mother to move in with me. Even though she's prickly, domineering and neurotic, I'd rather have her living with me than alone in NYC lolol.

We have a filter, but it doesn't really work. It doesn't block reddit or imgur, but blocks historical articles because they have 'gun violence' or 'insensitive language'. I just use my phone's 4G if I really have to look something up. I pretty much only use my work computer/internet to check the school website and my school email.
The tech guys here seem to be content with doing as little as possible, so I doubt they would want to flag you / file a report unless you were looking at something really inappropriate.

I know the Canadian Space agency was looking for recruits(it's closed now), but your daughter could also look into that when she's older. I can understand the facination for space exploration, I've been keeping tabs on the Curiosity rover, those Mars photos are amazing! LOL..She's your mom, she's allowed to be prickly and domineering!

@vivain: I bend like a flexible reed a lot for my mother- I just hope that my kids don't have to do that for me when they are older. As in she's my guidebook on what not to do for my children when they are adults.

Don't know how much you're keeping up with it, but the Orion launch system is nearing completion. This is what will take us to Mars most likely. Both NASA and the Russians are working on a plan for it, with the Russians taking the Moon, and us getting Mars. The goal is cooperation to avoid another Space Race. The cool thing about Orion is that we're going back to the Spacecraft approach rather than the recyclable Space Plane of the shuttle. The shuttle was useful and tremendously beneficial, but it didn't really break any tremendous barriers. We regressed from deep-space flight after Apollo back to LEO research. The Russians aren't in much shape to do anything else. The problem is funding of course. Despite what the wingnuts on the Right would have you believe, NASA makes up less than 0.5% of our budget. It's not much better anywhere else. Even on our comparative starvation diet of funding into science, technology, and space exploration, we still have more money than everyone else. The ESA has to plan out probes nearly a decade ahead of time, and they have little way in the room for error. Same with JAXA. The best they can both do is put a probe up every now and again, and then send up a few supplies with us or the Russians (we're still really the only ones that can do cargo launches). The Indians have their program, but they're content to piggyback off the Russians too. As of now, only the Russians and the Chinese have manned launch vehicles in operation, and they're not much in the way of funding. The Russians at this point can only afford to be the ferry for everyone else into space (they can't even afford Space Stations anymore), and the Chinese have decided to go it completely alone; adjusting for technological differences of course, they're at a level that is comparable to the late-stage of the Mercury program or early-stage of the Gemini program compared to the rest of us. NASA is also still putting up the lion's share of material into space, along with with the 'privatized' space agencies (which I wish would actually work for NASA rather than contract for them.) We also need to get these damn civilian space tourists out of the way. But yeah, NASA's budget these days doesn't account for much right now. We're cutting back everything but the essentials so that Orion has the best chance possible.

I'm so butthurt about the inability of the American public to understand the importance of our space program. I check up on NASA info periodically but somehow I managed to miss the Orion project even though I've visited their website a few times within the last year Just reviewed the overview of Orion, it looks completely awesome, and my hype IS REAL.

One kid tried to say he was 'researching' breast cancer and comparing healthy to 'at risk' boobs. Another went on the adult whitehouse site, and said he was writing a paper on Obama and typo'd and that he meant .gov and not .com. Which I could believe at face value, but his three previous search engine requests conflicted heavy with his Obama essay story unless he knows something about the President I don't know about lol.

We're cutting back everything but the essentials so that Orion has the best chance possible. It pisses me off too that space exploration has been put on the back burner. I remember in the 80's when technological advancements and the idea of space travel was viewed as a positive thing, then along came the 90's and everything was painted in a negative light. I do consider space exploration as an important step for humanity and I think there's been way too much importance put on profiteering and not enough is being put on the education and science of space travel. I have a long list of grievences about how rightwingers are treating all of this, but I'm not going to go into a rant here. All I can say is that any nation who is actively contributing to the advancement of our knowledge of the universe has my deepest gratitude and respect. I have my name put on a computer chip that's going on the Orion mission, I thought it was such a neat idea and was happy that NASA would give people that opportunity.

Well, Challenger really threw a wrench in our space program. It reminded us that we weren't invincible (and the ensuing investigation showed us the problems with the NASA administrative system at the time) and that space travel was dangerous, and without a solid goal to galvanize us to push forward, we lost some steam there. It sort of recovered later, but then the Soviet Union fell... and with it, our ambition to further space exploration (after all, whatever it was, it was important we did before those Commies). The 90's had a few publicity stunts to keep enough interest, but as you say, it was a rut. Then Columbia disintegrated, and in my eyes, that was what sounded the death knell of the shuttle program. As well, the current NASA administrations goals, human spaceflight is not a primary objective at the moment. It was the combination of novelty, having an enemy/cause to rally against/behind, and the feeling of achievement, not disaster. My name is on the chip as well.

We have to always connect to a VPN before using any of the company resources. I always make sure I turn off the VPN right before clicking some threads here tho. Mostly because it isn't a private connection to these forums

I'm working so much lately in my new job that I don't even have time to check my e-mails properly so the forums are out of the question.

My heart broke when the news showed Challenger blowing up, it was a shock. And losing Columbia, yeah, it was like losing an old friend, I remember when Columbia flew it's first mission...and losing so many brave crew members was/is heartbreaking too. To see the shuttle program shut down was sad, I know there was a lot of work that had gone into it for what, over 30-35 years. I'm one of those observers who didn't consoder it just a novelty, I thought it was important...mind you, I didn't give it as much attention as I could have, but it was always neat hearing about the missions. Then there's Spirit & Opportunity getting sent to Mars, I loved that, and I was up watching the Curiosity landing 4 years ago...*squeee* it was so exciting! Ok, I'm geeking out now.. (I'd love to say nerding out, but I'm not that knowledgeable on the subject... ) Hey, cool! Your name is on the chip too! Hee hee. When Orion lands, we can be martians together!!

I browse forums far too much for my own good at work. I get away with it because I direct the workflow of our team and do a lot of specialised tasks that nobody else does.
I get my ass into gear if we're behind and ive got no problems working weekends too, so my boss is pretty happy. But yeah, I give myself a bit too much credit for bringing our team ahead of schedule, justifying in my mind slacking off time.
