In terms of damage output, the squadmates with grenades are those that I found did the best. So Liam and Jaal. Don't invest in their gap-closing abilities (Havoc Strike and Avenger Strike), it makes them go up to an enemy's face and die fast.
In terms of pure tankiness, Vetra and Drack win out for sure. Drack in fact is very all-purpose, he rarely dies, deals decent damage and once upgraded is a good combo primer. When in doubt, bring the Krogan along for a fight.
Peebee and Cora I'd mainly take if you use powers (preferably Biotics) for them combos.

Jaal and Drack are my fav. As a Biotic I can charge in and strike with melee and I get major tech combos with Jaal because of it, and Drack gathers up the enemies that are coming at us with a quick sweeping motion lol (sometimes Drack and I charge together) and Jaal always gets the ones sneaking up on me from behind with his melee attack, so I'm always safe with them.

Drack and I guess Cora.
Drack is just funny because he runs up to stuff and smashes faces in with a hammer. ~800 years in the future, and a large thing with a big hammer is the most threatening thing on the battle field. He also tanks really well.
Cora is pretty decent, though sometimes her charge gets her in trouble.
I don't like Vetra because her AR has way to big of a spread. Liam is ok. He's got Overload which helps with shield enemies. Peebee is...whatever. I personally think she suffers the most from the player not having control of her abilities for timing/combo work.
Jaal is useless to me. As far as I can tell, he sits in the back under cover and masturbates until the last enemy is dead then throws a grenade.

I just use who I'm in the mood to use. But I have to check if Cora keeps Spamming Charge. I mean, there's that achievement to revive your fallen team members, so I guess I'll just let her charge through the battlefield next time.

Vetra is pretty powerful and doesn't seem to die thanks to her shielding abilities, Drack is also great. Peebee is good at priming targets with pull once you uograde it.
Liam and Jaal seem the weakest to me but all are pretty good once their skills have been upgraded.

I'm surprised so many people use the Drack and Cora combo. I usually put my team in rotation, but the DC combo was what I tended to use the most and found the most effective. Here's a ranking of the characters I used the most:
1) Drack: He has tons of survivability and he can prime with his gunfire. The fact that he liked to charge into the fray made him work well as a tank for me.
2) Cora: Mainly played support for me with Shield Boost, which I spec'd to reduce damage. I never got Cryo Ammo for her, but she was still a very useful character, though I dislike how often she used Charge since it could get her killed quite a bit for my liking.
3) Vetra: Great damage and survivability with Power Armor, Turbocharge, and Disruptor Ammo. She worked well whenever I used her, but she could easily over-extend herself if I didn't manage her placement well.
4) Peebee: Surprisingly the character that died the least for me. The main reason I like her is that her Infection made it so much easier to take down targets, especially Observers, since I mainly used her in Remnant filled areas. Shockwave and Pull didn't help much, but she was more a debuffer than anything else.
5) Liam: Mostly a damage dealer for me. Once I got Overload for him, he tended to stay in the backlines just tossing Frag Grenades and Overloading enemies. It didn't look like he did much for me, but he didn't feel useless either.
6) Jaal: My least favorite squadmate. He died the most often for me and he didn't know whether he wanted to stay at range to snipe the enemies or go in close for an Avenger Strike. In either case, he often felt like dead weight to me.

To be honest, on Insanity, Liam seems to be the best to bring for some reason. He just combos exceptionally well with anything you bring.
Which is a shame, because I prefer bringing other characters with me. Vetra is probably my favourite to bring, but she's... Kinda useless, at least before you can give her permanent distruptor ammo.

I played on Hardcore, and Drack is the undisputed king of combat. Rarely dies, does good damage, tanks a ton, has Incinerate, can be specced to get himself up if he dies (though that choice is questionable). After that... Meh.... Cora is good if she NEVER charges. Shield Boost works wonders, but she tends to die a lot, particularly early, with Charge. Liam was good for Overload and grenades. Not much else. Jaal is the story tag-along. In combat he tends to hang back and stay out of the way, which means he survives, but that does not help if it is at your expense. Vetra I almost never used because she bored the daylights out of me. Peebee is great for picking up all the weak dudes. That's the meat of her utility.

I rarely pick who is good based on combat but on personality. That said really enjoying Cora and her and her shield boost.

Drack protects me from animals while I snipe baddies. Jaal provides great nomads dialogue. They are my bros!

I like Drack.
He's tough and makes an excellent distraction as I tactically take enemies down.
There's a reason why Krogans are seen as the ultimate bodyguards in the ME universe.
Fan of Vetra also. She lays down suppressing fire and knows how to survive

Never Cora.
Seeing the "Excellent Asari Commander" use her Biotic charge against a Remnant Architect, resulting in instant-death?
Keep the car warm, sweetheart, while the grown-ups do the hard work

If you play someone who hangs back a lot like I did (biotic/sniper), Drack helps to pull aggro. Vetra is also a good tank if you level up her armour, although the enemies don't focus her down as much. I didn't have tech powers, so Liam was good for combos. Plus, he had some uncanny luck with his frag grenades in my playthrough.
I don't really understand the inclusion of Avenger Strike in Jaal's repertoire. The guy usually fights for sniper spots with me, why does he have a melee gap closer that puts him totally out of position? I've heard someone say it's actually supposed to be an escape mechanism, like a murderous version of Overwatch Mercy's Guardian Angel, but my Jaal sure didn't get that memo, he used it to aggressively jump behind enemy lines. However, from level 30 upwards, on normal, it doesn't really matter anymore, my teammates were pretty indestructible all around.

I just mix it up depending on how I feel. My favorite team up so far, though, is Peebee and Jaal. Their interactions on Voeld were extremely amusing.
Though as a range engineer, people like Cora and Drack would probably be best for drawing attention away from me.

Just FYI...
People in the navy hate the term "Shipmate".
