I usually avoid using Shield. Making the whole team invincible is kinda boring, but that's just preference But I like other Barriers which require at least a bit work to use them effectively and it tells who is too low promoted + too stupid to come close to the keeper Qunari are not mage friendly especially those who are build for fire and/or frost damage. I often quit and start a new game when I get qunari, It is not like I can't beat them but I do not bring a level 16 mage and then mostly use my staff to do damage, I can have this when I am level 1 Barrier is a core element of the game to protect the team as well as generating support XP. Which kinda useless against qunari which dispel them faster than you can cast them. They make Guardian Spirit pointless, too. It should pop in when things go wrong giving you the opportunity to get your health back or do some damage before dying, with qunari: GS actives, assassin dispels, assassin kills you

I usually avoid using Shield. Making the whole team invincible is kinda boring, but that's just preference But I like other Barriers which require at least a bit work to use them effectively and it tells who is too low promoted + too stupid to come close to the keeper Just to play devil's advocate, barrier is a core element of the game to protect the team as well as generating support XP. oh wait, you said that.. :: chuckle :: The support experience from shield is very nice. And honestly, I need the barrier when I run with the inferno belt on. But, it is nice to be able to help others that are likely playing over their promotion level, and I am increasingly enjoying the pugs and helping relative newbies lately. Both those reasons are why I run with shield on my elementalist as well. That said, I probably only keep shield on people about 70% of the time and will often tell them that before the match. I generally cast it when I need it, or when I see that others are low on health. And I run a nice dps/shield hybrid I think that manages to do a little damage on many of the enemies while also bringing in support from the shield, which nets usually around 45k experience on dragon NM runs without hogging all the kills or running up large kill streaks. Whenever I play with the true shield-spamming Saarebas who sits at the beginning of the level, I roll my eyes a bit. That player may be getting support experience, but they get nothing else. And I generally have to run after enemies that are making a bee-line to them which slows down the whole level.

I use barrier with the Elementalist most of the time, too. Speaking of which: Elementalist Builds

But I like other Barriers which require at least a bit work to use them effectively and it tells who is too low promoted + too stupid to come close to the keeper ^Same reason that keeper is my favorite support mage for barriering. Because her barrier has area limit and not spammable like the one of Saarebas', it's necessary to pay close attention to surroundings as well as your teammates' movement in order to make proper decision about when/on whom to cast barrier. This actually can make supporting an exciting and challenging job. I also like chasing pugs all over the map to cast barrier on them if I decide they need it, regardless whether they want it or not.

Yes, exciting and challenging... like herding cats! Believe me, I know... (but enough about that), I still plant barrier on walls and even enemies. That's how good I got!
