Sounds alright. Can combat be simplified/avoid crafting (like in Tyranny with Story Mode), do companions have any stories/dialogues (a gorgeous male companion is a bonus) and is the game completely playable w/o any friends? There are a bunch of difficulty levels, I believe the easiest will allow you to play without crafting, but IMO it's skipping so much of the fun, especially as you need like 0 twitch reflexes. The game is completely playable alone, companions are voiced (Sebille is voice by the VA of Samantha Traynor/British Female Inquisitor) and have their own story, afaik far more fleshed out than the first game. As for a gorgeous male companion, hmmm I'm a hetro-male so I don't have a say about it, but Ifan I guess? Anyway it doesn't matter much as the game is mostly isometric. Looking back, while I really enjoyed DA:I, the first DoS game is my game of 2014.

I'm playing on tactician mode, for the smarter AI mainly. I must say, the enemy is rather brutal, it will use elemental surfaces against you, and it will take advantage on any opening... Your guys are on fire, so you use a rain spell to get rid of the fire, now you are standing in a puddle and everyone is wet. Unfortunately for you, one of the enemies has shock spells... And just like that half my party is wiped... Classic mode it is, then!

So, I fought a certain witch in a cave full of piles of bloody corpses. That fight was BRUTAL on Tactician difficulty... She summoned a bunch of Undead and giant bugs. 3 members of my party died before Fane managed to cut down the witch with his two-handed axe. I'm enjoying tactician mode, it reminds me a bit of the Long War mode in XCOM. Now I'm curios about the "honor mode"... My understanding is it's similar to Tactician mode, but you're only allowed one save slot, which gets deleted if you wipe.

Well, with the original being on sale and you all talking about how good it is I decided to buy it.
Any advice for a new player in terms of what class and skills make a good combination between the two protagonists?

Noticed the original DOS (Enhanced) was 70% off in the Xbox store, so finally picked up a copy. Any tips?
Ranged attack is much more effective than melee at low levels. Movement costs action points. and you don't have many when you start out.
Don't have your characters learn a little bit of everything. Skill levels cost increasingly more points as you progress; you need to have enough points for Master level spells and skills, which you won't have if you generalize.

Well, with the original being on sale and you all talking about how good it is I decided to buy it. Any advice for a new player in terms of what class and skills make a good combination between the two protagonists? You will have a party of 4 (unless you go dual Lone Wolf), I would consider 2h better for the most part than 1h in the first game, also have at least 2 specialized mages or at least 3 characters that can decently cast spells. Have a dedicated crafter companion, and go to 5 crafting and 5 blacksmith ASAP, but remember that you have equipment and the scientist talent so you wouldn't actually need to invest more than 6 points in each. Crafted weapons are in general stronger than the ones you find and buy, before the enhanced edition they were MUCH stronger, but in EE it is more balanced towards having more damage vs less perks. Get a character with Pet Pal talent, it makes the game more fun when you are able to talk to animals. Don't underestimate the touch spells, they can control very well the enemies and are very useful even on only 1 point in the corresponding school for melee characters. Also I would recommend for every character to put at least 1 point in the water spell school for the healing and rain spells.

Sounds like it will be many months before the console version is released. Don't get me wrong, they have totally earned their coming break, but I want this game soooo much... the wait will be unbearably long!

From where you landed just go along the beach to reach RP. Fane is found in an area vailed with shrubbery with the entrance somewhere between the middle bridge parts.

Any advice for a new player in terms of what class and skills make a good combination between the two protagonists? Magic is super powerful in this game due to the crowd control. Fire/Earth mage is a good combination for one person as it synergizes well. Poison Enemy --> Light them on fire for an explosion. Other character can be whoever but I prefer a Ranger because of the elemental arrows.

I just finished act 1 (battle on the ship) and would like to know if it has to go like that or if I messed up royally. (warning, big spoiler ahead) Half of my companions are dead?! Can I bring them back later on or can I save them somehow so they won't die in the first place? I mean, I'm all for lasting consequences in games and stuff, but Ifan had ALL MY CRAFTING SUPPLIES in his inventory and I didn't even get a chance to loot his corpse. Every damned mushroom and nail I had so painstakingly picked up in the first 15 hours or so. Please, nothing too spoilery, I just want to know if I better go back to an earlier save.

Only the party will survive that "fight", it's scripted that way. I'm not sure what happens if a party member died in the fight though, probably safer to use a resurrection scroll on him/her before the spell is completed.

That's what I meant, the characters who were not in my party at that time. If that's the way it goes I will have to live with it, but a way to retrieve their inventories or at least a warning to put your stuff elsewhere before the fight would have been nice.

Few reviews are starting to trickle in. The common factor: one of the greatest RPGs of all time and probably the best RPG since The Witcher 3. Hmmmm interesting...

Comparing DOS 2 to The Witcher is like comparing every single fantasy book to Tolkien's LotR. Qualitywise maybe, but totally different gameplay and overall feel to it. I'm not sure a Witcher fan would automatically like Divinity. Fast paced real-time combat witch emphasis on the right timing against turn-based, think 5 minutes about your next move kind of game. Semi-realistic, dark medieval-like setting against a colourful, lighthearted and sometimes a bit silly world. Putting them in the same category is a bit of a stretch (mostly on part of the witcher, not much role-playing going on there). I liked the Witcher well enough, I just don't want anyone to get DOS 2 and be disappointed because it didn't live up to their expectations and start whining about the game.

Combat- and roleplaying-wise DOS2 does look better, actually — my take on TW series is that the first two games have clunky combat but better roleplaying, while the third one has decent fights but loses nuance in interactivity and storytelling. I don't want to sing DOS2's praises to early, but it is promising. The first game picked my interest because it looked like and RPG where I might find battles as fun as the story and roleplaying parts rather than just tolerate them (at long last!), but all reviews pointed to it being too weak in the latter departments and therefore I deemed it not worth the investment. Too bad I probably won't have time to play this one until later this year. I've been looking at some videos of the GM and Arena modes, to avoid spoilers, and my biggest concern at the moment is that they won't flesh them out enough, with patches and the like. Arena mode could be a lot of fun with the ability to create custom characters, and I hope GM mode will be expanded with a full editor at some point.

I played and liked both games as well, I was merely pointing out that the Witcher and DOS are two very different types of game, despite both being called RPGs. It's just a bit annoying that the witcher is treated like the current holy grail of gaming and everything is compared to it. I'm not far into DOS 2 yet, but it seems to have improved in the storytelling department, not as aimless as the first game's story imo. I also accidentally romanced a skeleton, not sure if that in itself counts as improvement, but the game has romance options now. I haven't looked at the co-op/multiplayer/whatever features of the game at all and am not going to because I actually enjoy playing alone, but you can create custom characters in the SP campaign just as well, they just come without a backstory in that case.

Do the romances in Divinity: Original Sin 2 have non-sexual routes, or do you have to have sex or the romance ends?

I might have to get this just for that alone! Just recently finished the first game (EE) and liked it well enough but the turn-based combat made every encounter just seem to take forever. Will probably wait for this one to go on sale, and maybe try my luck at the first game again now that I know a bit more what not to do. It was a pretty long game though - I clocked just over 100 hrs on it.
