They spent 40 million on development and no where close to that on the marketing campaign. They utilized a number of tools which are relatively low cost and relied on fan hype and social media to carry the marketing for them. I have not seen much in the way of tv ads, but seen a large internet based viral marketing strategy with their website the "Andromeda Initiative" and the videos playing a key part. Much of EA's marketing is done "in house" from their own on staff marketing teams which they use for all their games. So even generally I would say maybe $20 million on the high side for advertising bringing the total to maybe about $60 million. If they pre-sold even 2 million copies (they were projecting 3 million) then they made nearly a 100% return on their investment. The game will continue to sell over the course of this year likely hitting 5-6 million copies both physical and digital copies plus in game purchases for multiplayer, DLC, etc. This game will make EA money just like Inquisition made them money. Bioware is likely already begun some level of production planning on the next game (the meta-story will have been written as part of the ME;A production).
And the same haters who railed against this game and didn't buy it, will rail against the next game and not buy it and everyone else will buy it. It's not complicated. If all the hate and hype could kill games, ME:A would never have been made. DA:I would never had been made and DA:4 wouldn't be already whispered about.
Just like ME:2 really fired up interest in ME:1, I have little doubt ME:A2 will fire up additional interest in ME:A.
