Every year since 2008, IGN would drop these April Fools jokes in which they would make a special trailer for some fake idea that would be awesome in real life. These include a Harry Potter TV show, a Transformers themed Titanfall DLC, a Star Wars Netflix series, and there most famous (or infamous), their trailer for a Legend of Zelda movie. This year, they made a fake, but really well done, trailer for a Grand Theft Auto TV show for AMC from the creators of Breaking Bad. While I haven't seen Breaking Bad (I mean, I saw the first few episodes and figured it wasn't really my kind of show), I can definitely admit that would be both an awesome fit and a great idea!
It got me thinking though. You know how video games don't seem to translate well to movies (though I guess the Assassin's Creed movie worked, and the Angry Birds movie (-ish), and the new Tomb Raider movie seems promising)? Well, what about TV? I mean, I don't think we've seen a TV show adaptation of a video game yet (with the exception of the upcoming Castlevania series on Netflix), and I think for video games, TV seems like a better fit. The fact you can separate whole stories into multiple episodes seems makes adapting big games easier than trying to fit into a 1.5 - 2.5 hour movie. Plus, most of our popular games contain side-quests and multiple storylines, which would be much easier to track if you break them down into a TV show format.
So with that said, what games would you prefer to see in a TV show format? The only rule is that the game you choose shouldn't be based on a pre-made franchise that already has a TV presence, so sorry fans of Telltale's Walking Dead or Batman Arkham series!
My suggestions (bear in mind, many of these are meant to have original storylines. These games don't need to strictly follow the storylines of pre-established games, but their world can be explored for new story ideas):
- Fallout
- Grand Theft Auto
- Witcher
- Mass Effect
- Borderlands
- Warcraft (I think TV would have been a much better fit than the movie)
- Mario (I know Mario technically had a show made in the 80's but it wasn't any good. A faithful reboot could work)
- Overwatch
- Assassin's Creed
- Star Wars: The Old Republic (Mainly I'm looking for Star Wars to officially make the characters of the Old Republic era proper canon)
