I just now got a really intrusive ad. Not just an autoplaying video, but something that left BSN and loaded the advertiser's page (a "4gamers4free" site or somesuch, I only glanced at it for the fraction of a second it took me to find the magic X in the upper right corner) without any input or click from me. I opened a thread, and some script redirected me. I've got a rather high tolerance for ads actually, but that was more than one step too far. I've had this happen to me twice now in just a few hours. They're easy enough to ignore, but redirecting me and not allowing me to leave the page? Fuck no.

I have reinstated Adblock as flash kept crashing on my pc. From the looks of the proboards forum this sometimes happens with certain ads on chrome. I have tried some of the tips out there to fix it but no joy, so it stays on til those ads are gone. Works fine on my phone though.

Just my two cents ...
I have no problems with the idea of ads on a site. So if proboards wants to use that funding stream and I benefit by having BSNuf available to me for free ... cool.
But ...
(there is always a "but" ... isn't there?)
If the ad has some long running scripts, bogs everything down, autoplays videos, loud sounds or takes me to other sites, links me to malware ... ya know, that's on proboards and I'm not going to support that. Initially I had no ad blocker, then when things bogged down, enabled my ad blocker. Of course, the next thing I saw was a proboards plea to disable ad blocker ... so turned it off, got the whole bogged down webpage thing, ad block re-enabled.
Here's the deal proboards ... it's on you to screen the ads on your sites. If they have the various intrusive and deleterious impacts on users, then deny their use by a prospective advertiser. Limit your site to ads that don't do the above. Yeah, you'll be tossing out some money ... initially ... but if more sites did that, the ad industry would learn and adapt. And amazingly, more people would allow ads on their webpages, without using third party software to protect themselves. In this case, less is more. De-escalate the ad wars. Sponsors ... those not using intrusive ads ... will win. The targets of the ads ... like me ... will win. Owners of websites ... like you ... will win. But it all starts with the owner of the website.
