Who thinks that Insomniac will add a Spider Cop outfit into this game at some point? That would be pretty fun. What would it look like though? An NYPD uniform with Spidey's mask?

Yeah, plus a cop hat and a nightstick hanging from a belt. Both the badge on the hat and on the belt buckle have a small Spider-Man logo on it.

I figured I’d drop a few more lines regarding this game. I always assume that there are potential buyers reading these threads. My earlier post was really positive, and I feel like I should address a few of the game’s weak points, as I see them. This is a good game, and one I’m pleased to own; but it’s not without flaws.
Edit: Apologies for the subpar (by my standards) quality in this and others of my recent posts. The site simply doesn’t work well anymore on my mobile devices. It makes building and editing a coherent post very difficult. It’s pretty frustrating and wearing thin. That out of the way, here we go...
Repetitive: The side content in this game is repetitive in a way that even old Assassin’s Creed games would struggle to match. It’s glaring even during the initial PT. Continuing post-game, or starting a new game, makes it difficult to tolerate.
A few examples of this are the various pop-up crimes that are the same thing, over and over, and auto-accidents which come in only one flavor.
Enemy bases could be lumped into this, but I feel that there’s just enough story to these that they squeak through safely. If nothing else, they’re propped up by excellent combat.
Needless “padding”: There is a somewhat entertaining side quest that introduces challenges. The problem is that the challenges themselves suck. I can’t imagine ever wanting to replay them once they’re completed. Combine these with the “repetitive” content, and the game starts to feel consciously padded.
Shallow and small open world: Manhattan is reproduced pretty impressively. It’s cool to see actual locations from NYC; and to hear call-outs to individual neighborhoods and streets. The bad news is that there is little depth to the setting. NYC’s denizens just walk the streets, waiting to be mugged by over-abundant criminals or high-fived by Spidey.
Manhattan is also not very large. Think AC Unity’s Paris, but imagine that Arno could swing through the city at 30x the pace he can run (likely a gross under-estimation). The neighborhoods are fairly well presented and fun; but Spidey can swing from Harlem to China Town in the blink of an eye. Also, Unity’s Paris was stunningly presented and very lively. Spidey’s NYC is far less convincing
Animations: This became more obvious to me the more I played. The gameplay animations aren’t bad; they just aren’t impressive. They’re pretty basic, and feature no contextual variety. I’ve praised the game for being polished, but these aren’t really all that polished at all. They aren’t bad, but neither are the great.
Weak boss fights: These look and feel pretty epic, initially. There are a couple that I find legitimately pretty good (both very late game). In general, though, they play more like movie scenes with QTE dodge-prompts to be followed by basic attacks or more QTEs.
I expected this game to have great boss fights. Sadly, the most epically heroic scenes are generally reduced to QTE or straight cut scenes.
Short: I can’t help feeling that the game is too short. Yes, I’m likely a bit spoiled by too many 80+ hours games. Still, this game is over in a blink. The main story path is really well done, in writing, acting and presentation. I really like it. Strip away the padding and Ubi-style bloat, though, and the game is really short.
Unnecessary Clutter: This is particularly subjective, since some people will live this stuff. That said...
There are over two dozen costumes in this game, most of which look like ass or are absolutely absurd. They dug deep into Spidey continuities for a few of these. Others are original designs (and the originals are honestly pretty good). In general, less might’ve been more, in this case. Most players simply won’t use most of these goofy outfits, if I guess correctly.
More important are the suit powers, suit upgrades and combat tools. Suit Powers are cool, but there’s one OP power that renders all others nearly pointless. (And it’s obtained very early in the game.) The upgrades (always on buffs) have a significant impact if you use them wisely, but don’t really feel necessary or meaningful. The tools just fall a bit flat, for me. The two (IIRC) web-based “tools” make sense. The others, ranging from drones to bombs, feel wrong. The game mostly nails it, in terms of being a Spidey simulator. The tools just feel goofy, in my opinion. Who thinks of Spidey slinging battle drones during combat? I understand the desire to provide options and variety; but I think it fell flat.
This post likely sounds pretty negative. That’s not really my intent. I feel like these weaknesses aren’t being mentioned frequently enough for those who are trying to get a more rounded view before buying.
I do like the game. It essentially feels like a very hands-on Hollywood production, and that’s not a bad thing. The gameplay, despite some very repetitive scenarios, is fun. The story, presentation and acting are excellent. It’s a good-looking game with spot-on facial animations.
I hope that the three (allegedly meaty) DLC chapters will make the experience feel more substantial. My biggest complaint is, essentially, that the core experience ends too swiftly, leaving only the mindless repetition afterward. Even if they do, though that means spending $80-$90 in order to get the "best" experience, as opposed to the $60 base prices. This being Insomniac's first attempt at a game like this, I'm not too bothered if the DLC manages to shore up the overall experience. They have the beginnings of a really fun series (I hope) with this game.

I haven't gotten it yet as I'm working through the first two tomb raider's to be refreshed and up to date for the third installment, but I WAS wondering how repetitive the game would be. That's kinda what I feared when I first saw the trailers. Looked very AC-ish and I'm not a fan of that series.

The game's mechanics are very easy to get into and can lead to repetitiveness with combat or web swinging, the folks at Insomniac somehow managed to make swinging and combat so engaging and fun that you don't mind the repetition. The combat, in particular, is not too AC-ish as you may think. While the basic idea of punching and dodging, is there, the game heavily encourages improvisation and utilizing the environment. It is very easy to get swarmed in the game and is a really huge thrill being able to fight yourself out of it.

That's kinda what I feared when I first saw the trailers. Looked very AC-ish and I'm not a fan of that series. The things it does well, it does really well. Navigation and combat are fun. The story, acting, sound and visuals are good. It definitely borrows way too much from the Ubi-formula, though. It didn’t bother me too much on my initial PT, but it’s been annoying since. Once NG+ is added, I may never touch 90% of the side content again, and I’m a hardcore completionist. Specifically, there are: * Towers used to defog the assorted portions of the map. * collectibles in each neighborhood * 5 of A activity, 5 of B activity and so on through E; A through E being essentially identical criminal challenges featuring vaguely different factions * enemy bases to be cleared * timed challenges to be cleared * landmarks to be visited and photographed * so on and so forth with the Ubi-style, map-clearing busywork... Did I enjoy this stuff? Sometimes I did, but I also enjoy AC games. The repetitiveness of AC games can be annoying, but doesn’t kill the experience for me. Same for Spidey. There are great parts that I really enjoy. It has a tiny map, though, in comparison to AC, which makes the samey-same even worse, in my opinion. For people who like AC games, Spidey will likely be fun. It is very much a super-hero AC. For those who don’t like AC, I’d recommend caution with Spider-Man. It’s likely not your cup of tea, though it’s definitely worthy of at least a single playthrough.

I recommend that on your first playthrough to at the very least take some time to do some side activities on the way. Not to work on being a completionist, but to at least get some more experience points and tokens needed to upgrade your gear. There are specific points where Spidey will say something like "Let me take a break and patrol the city for a bit." And those are moments where you absolutely have to a side activity before the story can continue. Even then, I still recommend doing as many side activities as possible so that you get the tokens for the different suits. If you care about seeing different Spider-Man suits.

Or just do them as quickly as possible so that you don't have to deal with them later on in-game (that's what I did in my playthroughs). Some of the research labs however need certain skills or gadgets to complete their missions. Also, getting the Web Blossom suit power is a "must get early" in the game.

Yeah, even the tasks that I find ridiculous or tedious had thoughtful humor and flavor attached. It might not be enough to make me want to do all of them again, but they’re worth experiencing at least once. There are some really cool moments embedded amongst the task-list material. Peter is really well written and acted. I definitely felt like I was playing as Spider-Man 100% of the time.
I’m around 50% through my second PT. While I don’t like all of the individual side tasks, I do like the game’s pacing. It gives us some stuff for the critical path, then a few side tasks pop-up, rinse and repeat. Sometimes, following a story encounter, Pete will say, “Well, I have some time to kill. Maybe I should check out the city,” or whatnot. It’s not forced or cheesy like it probably sounds. Another step in the critical path pops up very organically within less than a minute, so you’re never strong-armed into doing side stuff.
The very good pacing combines with the great core gameplay to create a smooth experience. I certainly think some monotonous filler can be trimmed in the sequel, but the game as it is is very fun. The DLC will likely make it even better, assuming it’s heavier on story encounters than random crimes and collectibles.
Anyone else really wanting the Future Foundation costume(s)? We know we aren’t getting the post-Venom black costume, but these two (black and white versions) are the coolest alternatives in my opinion. I’d love to have them.

Honestly, I'd rank this portrayal of Spider-Man well above any of the film versions. I really like their retelling a lot. I like what they’ve done with Peter, his family and MJ, the villains and NPCs. I like (most of) the seeds planted for a sequel. I like how the story feels true to the characters, yet modern and realistic in the 21C. Retelling classics or handling weighty continuities in new ways can be tricky. I think this telling of Spidey is great. I can’t wait to experience future content.

Honestly, I'd rank this portrayal of Spider-Man well above any of the film versions. Same with their portrayal of Mary-Jane. Being a reporter was a great way to have her be involved and contribute to his activities as Spider-Man, rather than solely be the damsel in need of rescue. It made her plot-relevant in a way that none of the films ever did.
👆This. Never understood why Sony and the guys at the MCU chose to have Spider-Man as a teenager. Plus having Tony Stark as the mentor figure to Peter Parker in the MCU movies always felt weird. Probably the same reason Spider-Man comics typically write him as still being one, despite being in his early 30s, because they refuse to let him grow up. Also because teenage Spider-Man is easier to write for than "happily married, with kids and a mortgage" Spider-Man.
As for Tony being his mentor in the MCU, I like the suggestion put forward that Tony sees Peter as a younger reflection of himself, someone with great potential who only needs to be pushed in the right direction and motivated, rather than squander his talents (as Tony did for most of his life).
By giving him access to his technology (which he has shared with very few people), Tony may even be considering Peter as a potential successor in the future. His demand that Peter return the suit Homecoming may have been because he felt he wasn't being responsible with it, or perhaps testing Peter to see whether he truly was worthy and could be trusted to use it wisely in future?

True enough, but it still feels weird. Anyways, who thinks that the next dlc for Spider-Man (after the Black Cat one) may have Daredevil in it? (with Spider-Man and Daredevil teaming up in it).

Interesting video on the Spider-man game and the general promise of achieving fantasies in different games. He has some legitimate points on Spider-man's greatest and weakest game-play aspects, and also an interesting thought piece on what it truly means to live out a fantasy in a video game. Basically the difference between FEELING like Spider-man vs LETS you be Spider-man.

That was an excessive amount of talking about a simple dichotomy. I think Insomniac nailed it. Swinging is like walking for Spider-Man. If you want your players to feel like Spidey, it needs to be easy, smooth and cinematic. They made the right choice.
It sounds like the vid-maker wanted a more challenging traversal system. He says both X and Y are legitimate ways to do it, but clearly pines for Y throughout the vid. He even compares Spider-Man to Super Mario. Seriously? The entire premise of the Mario games is platforming. Spidey is an open world action game. Who the hell wants to experience a platforming puzzle to get to MJ’s for dinner, or while pursuing the Shocker? I want to zip agilely and jump explosively. They got this perfect. It’s hard to believe that anyone could even think a more “challenging” method of traversal might be needed. Oh, well. It takes all types, I guess.
As he pointed out, this game makes players “feel like Spider-Man”, and an 8-year veteran Spidey at that. Also as he mentions, the learning curve is to be found in other systems such as combat. Hell, even swinging isn’t as easy as he makes it out to be. Hand both me and a newb a controller and see who moves with more speed, efficiency and style. I’m not sure why this guy thought this video was worth making, or at least why it needed to be so long and lovingly crafted. As with most of his vids, I agreed with the opening thoughts, but then just heard thinly veiled bitching for most of the rest of vid. Every video I’ve seen of his follows the same pattern: Solid opening talking point —> super long-winded whining “why didn’t the game do X like I’d prefer” —> long overdue conclusion.

Just bought the game last night.
First thoughts:
1. Love the traversal in this game. As other posters have said, I could just swing around all day and not care. In fact, I'm actually enjoying the more tedious stuff like collecting backpacks and such for this reason alone... the swinging is just too fun!
2. The combat is a lot harder than that of the batman arkham games imo. In batman, they seem to come at you a lot more, allowing for a lot of countering and relatively easily high hit combos. In spiderman, the villains with guns/rockets actually stay away from you and comboing without using the web attack doesn't flow as well. Once you get the hang of it though, it's pretty fun. (even though I still get hit way too much). I think the suit power or ultimate or whatever it's called needs to be mapped differently though because as it is currently, I hardly ever remember to use it.
3. I'm liking the story so far. (I've only fought Fisk and chased shocker) Not doing the whole origin thing again was a good call.
4. The writing team nailed Peter as far as his quips and attitude. Spider-Cop dialog is hilarious.
5. Fav suits that are usable so far are: Default Suit, Insomniac Suit, and Stark Suit. Not for their powers or anything, just for the looks. But I only have like 1 and a half rows unlocked to purchase so far.

NG+ was added, today. Tuesday, “The Heist” Expansion releases. Three new suits, new enemies, and some time with the Black Cat. I’m expecting this to be good. This game is so smooth and enjoyable, I’m glad we’re receiving some reasons to return to it.
